Played here 8/26/19. As much as I've always enjoyed this layout (truly a links style), the condition is what has kept me away. From excellent conditions when I first played here (2012) to what it is today. Difficult to articulate accurately, but it's not good. That notwithstanding, its not all bad. I really appreciate the customer service at check in and explanation about what they are trying to do with the course. Lot of re-sodding, renovations, water and work being put into and on the course. I was told honestly, that the course is still about a year away from being completely refreshed. I truly hope they continue and finish the work, I believe this course will be very popular. On the day I played, the par 5, # 10 was completely closed. Again, staff was honest up front when I checked in. Tee Boxes were generally in good shape. Grass a bit long on a couple but nothing to complain about. Fairways are poor in spots (bare dirt, and thin in spots) and spotty with coverage. Overall, the most disappointing aspect on the day I played, but this is where it appears they are putting in most work. Greens were bright spot, although very soft. Still, rolled nicely and were very playable. Bunkers were below average to poor, nix between dark sand / dirt and some hard pan. Need more work. This all said, players should realize, as designed, the course is not supposed to be a lush green experience. When in good shape, it stills plays fast. As mentioned at the top, I really hope this renovation gets done and if so, I'll play much more often. The course features a burn which snakes around several holes on the front nine. You must be aware of yardage to the burn or to carry. Makes the shot selection very important and strategic. Are around the course continues to grow. Residential (but no house anywhere on the course and in play), parks, and development. Minor League stadium right next door, and of course people jumping out of airplanes overhead. Always makes for a fun day. Very nice grill and patio to enjoy after the round. Keep it going Links team. I think the hard work in restoring this course will pay off.

Early Friday single only a couple golfers out. Tournament followed later when I was finishing up on 18. Tee boxes flat good coverage very few divots and smooth medium fast greens with repaired ball marks. Could use a light sanding to fill in pock marks. Fairways surprised me with green grass in most of my landing zones still some bare spots but much improved. No rough but I had a rock wedge along to practice twice off of hard barren waste areas. In two greenside traps made up 'n down though wasn't sure of material prior to hitting but felt like soft silty sand. Didn't pay attention to others or fairway traps. Range was already setup to new grass hitting lines at 6:15 then an enjoyable 2:45 round that I will play again.

4/8 using Underpar $50 2some easy 3 1/2 POP seemingly having the course to ourselves teeing off at 815. Very friendly staff who communicated that there will be a lot of resources invested into the course. While hope may spring eternal it apparently is much harder to get grass to grow. The fairways remain patchy with some areas providing an ok lie but there are many really thin to bare areas. We played lift and place but really only had to move the ball about 1/2 the time. With the thin cover and firm/hard surface striking the ball 1st and cleanly was a priority especially with the wedges. No real rough often just sandy terrain bordering fairways with occasional areas of slightly longer grass around the greens.
Tees were level but a bit shabby. Bunkers were rather thin but playable--got up and down 4 out of 5 mostly due to making longish putts--and some had rocks and pebbles.
Greens were the best part of the course rolling medium/medium fast with some occasional slight bumpiness.
The layout has a lot of potential and has always been enjoyable but the overall conditions make choosing the links difficult when for $10-15 more there are other options. Also for me an hour's drive over the Ortega is also a factor to consider.
All in all its still a worthwhile experience for us occasionally.

Played here on 3/16/19. Price wasn't too bad. I played with my friend and we tee'd off at 6;47am. Right at sunrise. We were the second pair off the tee. Pace of play was 4 hours for us but we also spent some time looking for golf balls thanks to the high wind. Rack rate was $49.00 a bit steep for the conditions. Lets break those conditions down now.... Fairways- Weakest part of the course, super thin, very little to no growth and mostly dirt or sand. Balls would roll forever and sometimes into the water canal's because of it. Greens- Best part of the course, very few ball marks due to them being so firm and fast. Greens rolled true and were pretty nice. Sand Traps- 50/50 some were fluffy others were matted sand with little rocks in it. Tee Boxes- 50/50 Front nine were much better than the back 9 on this course. Most were level but some showed some damage. Rough- was non existent due to super thin fairways Water- there was very little water on the course but it seemed to be clean and not smell. Cart Girl- Saw her twice and was polite and friendly along with the front desk who was also helpful. ** This course is going to start seeding in April they said so expect by Late June or July for conditions to improve. Until then I wouldnt pay more than $30 weekday and $40 weekend.

FINALLY!! The first round of golf since November 2017 is in the books, and it was a mixed bag on all levels. Shot 77 after nearing jarring a 240 3w for albatross (only pulled off a birdie thanks to the greens which will be reviewed later), and I have 2 deep nicks in my relatively new wedge (3 rounds) thanks to the bunkers (foreshadow).

GolfNow deal for $16 brought me out of work imposed retirement to play on a clear blue sky day with tons of wildflowers blooming all over the region. Great way to escape the city/suburbs and see if I still had any golfing ability left after over 450,000 air miles in the past 14 months.

Checking in with the shop has always been easy and pleasant. However, this time I noticed a new sign at check in. There is now a $1.50 "GPS fee" you are required to pay regardless of whether you want the GPS or not. IF you choose to decline use on the course when asked on the 3rd hole, you can go back in the pro shop after you finish to get a refund. You cannot tell them to turn it off in the pro shop and not pay the fee. This really rubs me the wrong way, and since it was not disclosed until checkin I feel it is a really cheap way to get an extra $1.50 from people who don't want to bother going back in the pro shop for a refund (like myself).

Off to the course, which the last time I played it (mid 2017 I believe) looked like a dirt outline of a once great course. Well, there are a few holes where the grass is back and looks close to what it used to. However, most of the course is still in a serious need of additional remediation and repair. I would have thought that after the past rains the grass would have returned. I was wrong. Bare ground galore, and since it rained yesterday even the dirt was playing slow. Drives stuck and didn't run like they should on a links course.

Bunkers... where do I begin with this one. My number one pet peeve with bunkers in courses the past few times I have played was the lack of sand and a ton of pebbles. However, here there are rocks... not small rocks but some up to an inch and a half. Some are on the surface and some are under the surface enough to not see them until ... well, let's say my beautiful forged wedge now has 2 pretty deep channels in the bottom (not surface scrapes). That's inexcusable in this day of rakes, sieves, and proper upkeep of the bunkers at some courses.

Greens: Greens used to be the best part of this course, if a bit vexing. I am used to the ball never taking the same exact route here as the greens are not rolled and there are little breaks that give them character. However, it looks like they have 3 different grasses growing in the greens now and the mottled surface kicks the ball wherever it wants. Probably doesn't help they were bumpy and slow from the rain the day before to begin with. However, looking at the tee sheet I am wondering if the bumps are from previous days and very little upkeep is being done daily to keep the surface up?

Overall: In the past this was my course to get away from everyone and just head out and enjoy myself on a fun layout. However, given the new "GPS fee" and the fact the course has not come back I think I am done playing here until there are major changes. Damaging my $150+ wedge with rocks in the bunker, the lack of care for the greens, and the inability to get grass to grow and take hold tells me a lot. I want this course to return to what it once was, but I just don't see it happening. I will miss playing here, but I cannot justify the drive for the conditions when there are over 15 courses within the same drive time with far superior conditions. Additionally, if I drive another 20 minutes you get to Temecula and even more amazing courses with great upkeep.

I don't want to say this course is done, but given what they charge for rack rate and what the course condition is ... they're done. RIP to a great Cal Olsen design that just isn't being treated as it deserves to be.

11/26 using underpar $50 2some on a pleasant slightly breezy am with an easy 345 POP. Friendly easy check in--newer carts with detailed gps giving distances to trouble and warning about hidden dangers--several burns cutting across fairways and guarding approaches.
I have always enjoyed the layout and even with all the building in the area there is still a remote quality to the setting. Staff in the pro shop report that there will be another million invested in further improvements next year.
However at the present time conditions are difficult. The course overall looks worse than it actually played. There are many bare areas in the fairways where the grass just does not grow and where there is grass it has now gone dormant after the recent frosts--still had mostly ok lies but often 2-3 feet in any direction would have been another story. No real rough--fairways are bordered by sandy dirt. Many of the fairways had cart restrictions.
Tee boxes were level and mostly in good condition. Found one fairway bunker nice and firm.
Greens also looked bad with some discoloration but rolled fairly well at medium speed.
This is not a course for the prissy--lies can be very random but pulling off a decent shot out of an adverse one is satisfying. On 4 I pulled my drive out into limbo land with rocks and dirt and bushes but had just enough room to get a full swing from 160 out got it pin high 3 feet off the green and rolled it 30 feet for a birdie. Then on 10 managed to hit out of the burn and advance the ball about 80 yards only to have it settle next to a large tuft of some gorse like grass where I managed another 80 yards--came away with a double this time.
$25 is a very fair rate for now. Sure hope they can get a handle on the improvements.

Played Saturday 9/1, course is still being worked on but you can get a good deal to play. Couple of holes have been shortened to par 3's to allow for the grass to grow back in. Fairways are still patchy and needed to move the ball onto some grass to hit a few times, greens were mostly decent with a couple needing more work and time. But I am encouraged that they are working to bring it back to better condition.

Early morning Sunday round in slightly under four hours. The staff is great but greatly over the top on the improved course conditions??? Most of the tee boxes were very thin and very dry but level. The lack of fairways made it difficult on a few holes to know where to land your tee shots and I've played here many times. There is no rough but plenty of thin and/or dirt areas along most holes. The traps have actually improved since my last round and have more sand and were in okay shape. The greens HAD been punched on Monday according to the pro shop and definitely showed it. All of the greens were very dry and still somewhat firm for just having been punched. Every area of this course needs WAY more water! The ownership had made good progress on improving conditions but I can't say that after today's round. The cheap green fees get people out but I cannot say that we will be back anytime soon.

Wish I could be more positive but the fact of the matter this is the fairways are a goat pasture. Lots of potential and management indicated they were putting money into the course. The staff was great, new golf carts with GPS. The greens were rock hard but puttable its links golf. My complaint your in the middle of some fairways and looked like a dirt road. Understand links is firm and dry but this is plain dirt. Hopefully they can save this tract and bring it back to what it was. For the price pretty hard to beat was $20 for twobacksides they were sanding the greens. Just come with an open mind or you will be really dissapointed.
