It’s hard to add a lot to the previous reviews.

It was my first trip to OQ and had heard so many great things about it and it lived up to the hype.

I was impressed with how much cushion I found in the fairways despite their appearance leading me to think they would be very thin.

The greens were in very good shape. Ball rolled very well. They were quite hard which had to be accounted for when hitting into them, so much so that ball marks were sparse and was tough to make one.

It was worth the drive and I’ll be looking forward to playing this beautiful course again.

Played with the GK Gurus in the first group out; combined that with a Cup 15 match with Rat-Patrol. OQ is my favorite course in SoCal and I enjoyed it once again. Earlier reviews hit most of the points I wanted to make. Greens were in good shape and will soon be more receptive. Fairway coverage was good and will get better as Bermuda comes out of dormancy. Only ‘problem’ with the current dry/firm Bermuda is that shots can occasionally run too far and maybe find trouble. Rough almost everywhere was fairly short and pretty benign. Tees were fine. Sand, a historic sticking point here, could be more plentiful around the greens and along fairways. Driving range benches could use some leveling/manicuring work, but it’s great to never have to hit off mats. Carts great with ball washer, nice GPS, and plenty of giddyup. Some cart path areas around the course need smoothing.

Met the amiable GM afterward and we had a fun discussion on the old quarry, Schmidt-Curley Golf Design, and other topics. Always recommended.

Was able to join fellow Greenskeeper Gurus for an enjoyable day at Oak Quarry, I am used to the dormant fairways and lack of sand in the bunkers, the bunkers lost a lot of sand over the past few days due to the strong winds we were subject to here in the I.E. Course was in good winter shape, Tee Boxes were in good shape, flat and easy to find a nice spot to stick your tee. Fairways as all have stated are brownish dormant and roll out is very nice. Playable nonetheless, rough was mostly laying down after the wind episode and was easy to play from. Bunkers were devoid of sand for the majority, some of the green side bunkers had enough sand to at least get your blade into and pop the ball up. Greens were great, rolling fast and true, just don't get too greedy and attack the pins, need to let the ball roll up some.
Thanks to Johnny for setting the day up, look forward to the next Guru outing. Thank you to the staff at Oak Quarry, all great friendly people at The Rock.

I also played here with the GK group and what a fun day. I always enjoy playing with GK'ers and today was no different.
The course was as described in the previous reviews and always a good test and a very fun track. I had never played here in winter and the fairways were a little tighter than I like but still nice to hit from.
The staff was great from the guy who meets you at your car to pick up your clubs to the server in the bar afterwards. Only complaint was no cart today and the halfway house was closed.
Thanks Johnny for setting this up. Looking forward to more of these midweek outing in the future.

Played yesterday with Bob, David and Jim and the rest of the gurus. Really a great day, could not ask for more beautiful weather. Service was great as usual here. Teed off in the 10:04 ish group and finished in a little over 4.5. Conditions were pretty solid for winter (tho below my standards for this course).

Tees: 7/10. Need some flattening on some tees (4 for instance) and some general work.
Fairways: 6/10. Winter brown, but not thin in any places I found. Plenty of cushion, just used to the emerald green here even in winter.
Rough 6/10. Basically non-existent on some holes, then present on others. Lies were a little inconsistent with quite a bit of divot damage.
Greens 7/10. A little bumpy and a little more firm than they should've been given the medium speed.
Bunkers 4/10. Generally awful, and I found 6 on the back so I would know.

Overall a wonderful day, and even with the course needing a bit of work, its still an absolute pleasure and recommend.

Not many straight forward, hit it there and that's it shots. The ball was almost always in for more of a ride than that! Conditions were very good, can't wait to go back!

The main purpose of a GK Guru visit with a golf course is to help spread the word of current very good/great playing conditions. Typically Oak Quarry being predominately a summer turf course plays its best in May, June and July. Well they have the golf course dialed in beautifully right now for February which is impressive. Come March they will aerate the greens and during Late March through April depending on how warm it is there will be a turf transition where the green rye grass gives way to the warm weather grasses. Long story short, get out there and play Oak Quarry this month!

Greens are as expected firm for this time of year, smooth and excellent speed. Fairways are dormant Bermuda with full coverage, firm for lots of roll and plenty of padding under the ball to compress shots. Rough mostly lush, not too penalizing and beautiful contrast to the fairways. Tee boxes are in good shape, mostly level, well cared for. Bunkers are a mixed bag. I was in a lot of them (which is not good if you want to score well there). The fairways bunkers are very firm, with some occasional scattered small rocks here in there you want to pick away from you ball, however I much prefer fairway bunkers like that than too much sand. Makes them easy to escape from. On the flip side the green side bunkers had decent sand and featured very steep faces. It took me a couple shots at times to escape them. They are well positioned so to avoid them during your round is quite an accomplishment. Bring your high lob sand game.

The layout at Oak Quarry can be best summed up as a bold statement. The unique visuals and setting set the golf course apart. It is a bucket list golf course for every golfer in Southern California. Extremely challenging, especially if the wind kicks up and loaded with scenic fun holes.

During the whole experience the customer services was excellent. Friendly professional staff.

Highly Recommend.

Played today with the GK Guru outing. Thanks to Johnny and Oak Quarry for the outing. The course was looking great with stunning views and green grass most everywhere. Upon arrival, course personnel came out and picked up my clubs and placed them on a cart along with others from our group.

I was early so I ordered a breakfast burrito ($8, with chorizo). It was big and had a lot of potato in it, so I felt weighted down for my round. Not doing that again.

Practice area is alright. Got to the range, all grass. We were moved up, but the hitting area was level and not too beat up. Lots of targets but no yardages that I saw. Bring a range finder next time if that’s important to you. There’s a chipping green with a.sand bunker to practice from. I probably should have done that! Also, there’s a small putting green.

The fairways (as noted by other reviewers) were mostly dormant. However, it was not a problem as there was ample turf and root zone to make solid contact. The cut was tight and a good shot could get substantial roll for additional yardage. The fairway on Hole 17 looked like there was an infestation of dandelion. They were mowed flat but I suspect some chemical treatment is in order.

The rough was also mowed tight. It was bumpy as well. I’m guessing it’s gophers/ground squirrels. It varied from lush and thick to sparse or bare. Mostly though, if you were on grass it was fairly easy to hit from.

Tees (whites) were level and a few seemed very firm as I had to use some effort to place a tee. There was good grass coverage and not a lot of divots.

Sand in the bunkers looked great, but that illusion was shattered with me thinning a few out from that soft layer of sand over hard pan. Maybe it’s just me and my LOFT, but I used to be good at hitting from a bunker.

Greens were quite nice. I fixed more than a few shallow ball marks, but there weren’t too many as the greens were very firm. Our group had some difficulty getting balls to check up on many approach shots and chips. They did roll nice with an occasional bump here and there. Good medium-fast speed. Lots of undulations and tiers to keep things interesting.

All in all, a great day not at work. Good weather and nice guys to golf with. I recommend this course.

Played in the GK Guru outing today on a beautiful day. Enjoyable playing partners. First time here in over 5 years. Forgot what a challenging layout this is. Overall the course is in good winter condition. Greens: smooth, firm and medium + speed. Fairways: firm with excessive divots in some of the collection areas but overall playable. Traps: the three I was in were firm. (my only negative) Rough: 1-3" high, very playable. Nice practice areas: driving range, chipping area and putting green. Also, good quality range balls. Excellent GPS units in the carts. POP: just over 4 hours. Good customer service. RECOMMEND.
