Played 7-24-22 afternoon riding ,getting around the course in about 5 hours, with no waiting on the front and waiting on most holes on the back. Tee boxes were just okay, mostly level with decent coverage. Fairways were in good condition, mostly green with some minor brown and thin areas, providing nice lies with good cushioning. Rough was in okay shape ranging from 1-3 inches with some bare areas the farther you got from the fairways. Was in a couple of greenside bunkers that had a good layer of soft white sand. Greens are probably the best part of the course, they were rolling medium pace and playing semi-soft and consistent from green to green. Like the changes they have made and would play it more often if I lived in the area.

I’m in the process of putting together our GK Plays outing recap to be posted in the forums tomorrow. Thank you so much to everyone that attended. Just posted some new photos of the golf course here so please check them out. San Vicente Golf Resort has only got prettier from my last round there back in August 2021.

First off, please read Mark’s review posted just below mine, great work and his description of the layout really nails it.

From a player’s standpoint, I love this track. Especially the 18 new green complexes which came out so good they helped San Vicente Golf Resort win the Renovation of the Year Award 2021 from industry media Golf Inc (New gorgeous large undulating greens well protected by beautiful bunkers and grass knolls). They can tuck pins in many spots on those greens making every approach, pitch and putt fun/interesting.

Conditions of the golf course are excellent. Smooth, medium speed, mostly firm greens. Speaking of the greens, they are much more receptive to golf shots now than 12 months ago. Mostly lush bermunda turf fairways that were established just prior to COVID and now have filled in beautifully. Rough was mostly lush, well groomed/defined and penal at times. Bunkers all in excellent shape with quality sand. Tee boxes in the same shape as the fairways, mostly lush and well groomed. San Vicente Golf Resort is a course with warm weather turf in June – October you can expect its best conditions.

From an organizer's perspective, even though our outing was small they delivered on all accounts especially with their BBQ, Drinks and Tent. Mark the head pro was out there talking it up with our guests and serving burgers, hot dogs, beers and drinks. They made us feel very comfortable and appreciated.

I highly recommend playing San Vicente Golf Resort this Summer or Fall. It’s worth the drive. Enjoy!

San Vicente Golf Resort is a mature parkland style course that was recently renovated to achieve greater playing potential. This newly renovated golf course utilizes excellent creativity throughout its topography to provide a top-level playing surface, while providing gorgeous views of the natural terrain and stunning surrounding mountains. This golf course was previously a Ted Robinson-designed golf course with renovations overseen by Andy Staples. The course is nestled in the backcountry of Ramona, and its characteristic challenge is a competitive 18 holes with a par 72, and yardages measuring from 4,483 to 6,822 in length. SVGR features large mature trees, strategic bunkering throughout, along with occasional water hazards. The course is primarily flat with some limited elevation changes from time to time. The course is surrounded by beautiful nature, and limited single-family dwellings. SVGR places premium on accuracy off the tee and into greens. The course defends itself with well positioned bunkers, medium length rough, and medium speed sloped greens. There were a few doglegs, but no blind shots that I could recall. For the most part, the course played in a forthcoming manner, that required some limited shot shaping off the tee. The course played its yardage, fairways offered some roll out on drives and approaches. The course was very well maintained and in above average condition. The course layout is rated a 4.33 out of 5, conditions are rated a 4.25 out of 5. I note the following: Tee Boxes: Level and green, no damage. Conditions above average. Fairways: Generally green, lush, and defined from rough. Conditions above average. Greens: Green, medium in speed, and on the firmer side. Speed about a 10. Conditions above average. Sand: maintained and at times heavy, and consistent throughout the course. Conditions above average. Rough: maintained and defined, about 3 – 4 inches. Conditions above average. Waste Areas: noted on a handful of holes and well maintained with overgrown nature that offered little to no recovery potential. Conditions above average. Driving Range: The range was average and adequate for a pre-round warm up session. Hitting off mats with some range balls showing high mileage. Range descends into a patched-grassed valley with various markers from 100 - 235 yards. Practice Putting Green: large in size and in excellent condition. Speed was consistent with course. POP: 4.25 hours – no wait was encountered on any hole. Other: Bar, restaurant, and the golf shop, were all very nice, and are certainly recommended. The service received at all was excellent. Really enjoyed this course and I strongly endorse playing SVGR. This course offers a fair test of golf for any level of golfer, that comes with a great surrounding environment, top tier customer service, and delicious food / drinks before and / or after the round. A little late with this review, but joined the GKers at San Vicente Golf Resort. Very interesting location in a part of SoCal that I had never visited and I have lived here my entire life. Missed out on the pregame, but that is my fault for not checking my email. Doh! Given that we didn't pay for range balls I was fine with a low quality range. Honestly, this is not a destination resort in my opinion, but the food was good, the place was clean, and the golf was well above adequate.

From my prior reviews you know pace of play is of critical importance to me. We were in the 3rd GK group and the round was almost 5 hours and we were the slow group. I will leave it at that to protect the guilty. Very frustrating.

Conditions across the board were acceptable with the greens and bunkers being very high quality. I personally like the layout, lots of elevation changes, lots of trees (which provided much needed shade), no 2 holes alike, and enough challenge to keep things interesting. Tees were a little beat up, but was always able to find a good spot to hit from. Fairways were very nice to hit from and gave decent roll-out. Rough was not overly penal, but was a little patchy. As mentioned previously greens and bunkers were excellent with consistent speeds throughout.

I would like to play the course again, but need to combine it with a couple other courses in the area as the 2-hour drive from the South Bay each way to play a 5-hour round did not leave a good taste in my mouth.

As a side note I stayed at the on-site hotel. Definitely nothing fancy, but clean, quiet, and a large room fit the bill.

Recommended.

Played the GK plays event at San Vincente Golf Resort On Sunday, July 24, 2022. Weather was pretty hot but a nice breeze made it feel much better. Great prizes from link soul and Golf moose the course also really did a good job of hosting us. The range is a little short and the balls are a little old but other than that it’s good place to warm up. Putting area close to the first tee hast raised cups and a rather large putting green. We played the course pretty quickly around 4 hours. The tee boxes were a little chewed up. Fairways for this type of course, at this rate, at this time of the year, (summer) it were in pretty good shape. Course has nice routing taken you uphill and downhill with some good views of the mountains. The greens and the closely mode areas around the greens were really the highlight for the course for me. They would receive well struck shots but if it was not struck well it would run through the green. The areas around the greens were closely mowed and provided ample chipping opportunities no bald spots or anything. This is my first time playing San Vicente golf resort and I’m probably gonna try to come back again.

Played yesterday, as part of the GKplays outing. Thank you, Johnny and all of the staff at San Vicente for putting together such a wonderful experience. The day started with goodies from Linksoul, OnCore and Golfmoose, followed by complimentary BBQ lunch and beverages. The shaded patio was reserved for us to enjoy out of the sun. Range balls were provided as well. The course is a lot of fun. There is such a variety of holes with only a few forced carries but plenty of undulations and a notable blind tee shot on the par 4 #6. Keep your shot in the middle of the fairway over the hill and the ball can roll nearly all the way to the green. It was a very exciting birdie! All of the fairways, tee boxes and rough were in really good shape. And there was real sand in the bunkers! It was such a pleasure after all the hard, pebble filled traps I’ve hit out recently. The greens were also a treat- firm and smooth. If you have a chance to play here, do so. It’s a bit of a drive from OC but definitely worth it. Highly recommended.

Played 7/2/22 7:20 am POP 3:50 min. $85. Course is in overall great shape. Fairways green and have full coverage. An occasional dry/burnt area along the edges, but they caused no issues. A little on the firm side with great roll out, but very nice to hit from. Mostly firm green carpet. Greens firm, but manageable with well struck shots. Ran at a medium fast pace with excellent roll. Really enjoy these new greens even though short siding yourself can come with a penalty here. Traps in excellent shape & consistent. Tees were the only week part, but no real issues caused. Just some were a little uneven, thin and or a little on the beat-up side. Temps were perfect on this day. An EASY RECOMMEND!

Would've been nice to know this ahead of time. Especially since they charged full price. Nothing is posted on their maintenance calender online.

The green complexes have plenty of undulation and collection areas with thin lies. Like the renovations done, but again would've appreciated some notice on the aerated greens or a discounted green fee.

Played 4/9/22 2:10 POP a tad over 4 hrs. Course is coming out of its non-overseed winter. Fairways were mostly green and filling in. Many thin/bare spots around but found mostly good lies. Greens were in very good shape but VERY firm. Very hard to get any stoppage on shots but if you play the distance -10 yrds. you can often get better looks at the hole. Unless the pin is up front with many of the green complex's having mounds in front that can deflect short shots. I've really come to embrace and enjoy the challenges of the new design. If the greens can get a little more receptive, it will even be better. They were running medium fast and very true. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming aeration will make any difference. Traps were in great shape and the new sand makes getting out predictable. As mentioned in previous reviews. Short siding yourself on these green complexes will make your day adventurous. If the pin is near an edge, play for middle! The $85 Rack rate is a little steep, but unfortunately is becoming the average costs these days. It is very sad to see the tree gone on the 9th fairway. I was worried that it would be removed during the construction and was glad to see it remained for reopening. But sadly, it took a huge turn for the worse and died to many of the local's delight. I was not one of them. Look forward to post aeration and would recommend waiting.
