Buena is a nice little course, playing just above 6000 yards from the tips. Course conditions have improved over the last year. Course looks green, and the fairways are lush in most spots. Rough is consistant, about 1 inch thick. Greens are soft, but VERY slow. Overall a fun course and makes you not try to rip it on every hole.

Played Sunday 9/5 twilight. The course played in less than 5 hours with minimal to no waiting and at a great pace for walkers. Conditions are good right now with lush fairways, tee boxes and rough. Although some fairways have marked off areas that are patchy but that just means they are acknowledge and being repaired. Greens are fantastic, smooth and putting true. This is a relatively short course but it makes up in severely undulating greens, tight fairways and well placed hazards what it lacks in length. At $23 walking twilight at 1PM rate, I will be back again and again.

Play Sunday at 2pm and finished in a little over 4:45. What a tail of 2 nines. I shot even par on front and 10 over on back. The front is short and requires only hyrbids or irons off the tee. The big dog is needed on the back.

Keep note of the winds on each hole. It can be as much as 2 clubs. Also, chipping requires so creativity as the greens are undulating.

Overall, good experience. Much better conditions than the LA courses.

I had not played Buenaventura in 4 years because of sub-standard playing conditions. Returned to the course yesterday after reading many positive reviews about its comeback this year and was impressed as well.

First off the playing conditions have improved dramatically and from the conversations I’ve personally had with Kemper Sports and the City of Ventura, keeping Buenaventura in good to great shape is a big priority. The greens although on the slow side, which is typical for this time of year due to increased play and temperatures, rolled smooth and held shots like darts. The fairways were mostly lush and provided good lies. The rough was thick in many places and lush with occasional thin/dry spots. The sand traps were excellent (much first hand experience today – lol), high quality sand and well raked. The tee boxes were lush but at times a bit un-level. Overall I thought the course was in great shape.

As for the layout, a walkers dream, level, big trees for shade and tee boxes short distances from the previous greens. It’s a tight layout that demands accuracy and the ability to work the ball in both directions. Bring your low tree shots too because you are bound to use them. An overall theme on this course seems to be OB left which probably explains why I was in the right tree lines all day – lol. It’s a short course, par 70, with easy par 4’s and 5’s yet demanding par 3’s…easy if you can keep the ball in the fairway. Although it’s a short course, it will put a lot a pressure on your wedge game since all the greens are very well guarded by sand traps with occasional forced carries over water (this is NOT a course you want to have a case of the “chucks” on). Furthermore, bring a good stroke and a keen eye to read big greens. Today the greens were on the slow side but had they been running fast, its three putt city. Lastly with the layout and what many golfers now days love, pace of play is fast! We played our round as a foursome in just 4 hours.

I did not have time to check out the clubhouse and some of the improvement in the works but one thing is for certain, Buenaventura is on the right track to becoming a better and better golf experience. I will return. Fun day.

Course conditions have gone down some at BuenaVentura since the last time that I was out...The fairways are not as lush but still provide decent lies throughout the course. The greens were very slow and healthy looking...some ball mark damage that our group fixed. Needto rip the putts here to make em. Tees were level for the most part and were lush. I actually like lush tees as I hit all the par 3's without a tee. Sand was in good condition as always. Rough bordering the greens was thick and added a great challenge to chipping and pitching the ball. Vicky inside the pro-shop is one of the nicest starters around. Buena is not hard on the wallet and is a fun short tree-lined course to play from time to time.

Played mid-morning Sunday, 8/1/10, in the PLGA J.C. Cunningham Senior Championship. Shortish course (6,000 yard par 70) renovated recently by same group that renovated Olivas Links. Rather than being open and separated by high rough, holes here are closely-spaced, almost no rough, separated by mature trees. Greens are not as severe as at Olivas but some have similar features, with the shorter par 4s and par 3s having more tiering/elevation/swales to toughen them up. Was on and off sunny and pleasant, and didn’t ever get really windy, although you had to account for the wind on almost every shot. Very good conditions throughout, greens more receptive and slower than at Olivas. They were having a problem with their sewer line and the bathrooms were closed. Cart girl seemed to be stalking us – saw her repeatedly as she wandered randomly around the course with no attention to what golfers were doing. Water generally available. Recommended.

The course is as good as I have seen it in years. There are still a couple of small areas in the fairways that are ground under repair, but it is really minor and the rest of the fairways and rough more than makes up for it. The greens were in good shape, except for a few unrepaired ball marks and someone ahead of us who was into the dreaded sunflower seeds (I only saw one shell on the third green). Great afternoon price of $33 non-resident including a cart. Sand traps were great except for the greenside bunker on five, which had hard-packed, wet sand. Pace of play was slow, taking over 5 hours to complete this short, par 70 track.

First time out (at) Buena in over a year, was impressed with how much better the fairways are. Traps had new sand, tees + rough nicely maintained. The greens putted OK, medium speed, very firm. The problem on the greens here is the sheer amount of pitch marks that go unrepaired. You could fix 50 per green and barely make a dent in the total.

Got let out of Jury Duty a little early in Ventura and was able to meet Nickesquire1 for some twilight golf at BuenaVentura. I was very impressed with the fairways today. They have full coverage- nice green lush grass on many of the fairways. There are just a few spots where the grass is thin in some fairways but overall I was impressed this time out with how nice the fairways were. The greens were a little bit firmer than the last time I played here and were in decent to good shape. We continued to fix many ballmarks on the greens. They still putt slow in my mind but I enjoy putting on faster greens. They held approach shots. The sand is always in great shape at Buena and you will always get a level stance on the tee boxes. Pace of play today was 4 hours 35 minutes. Staff inside the pro-shop very cool. Buena is a great course to practice your short game and how to learn to deal with the wind at times.
