Played 2-5-18 on a GN deal for $28 including cart teeing off as a twosome at 7:10 and finishing at 10:20 . Tee boxes mostly level, some were Paspalum and a little thin and some were Kikuyu which were a little more lush, both were cut tight with some divot damage on three pars. Fairways for the most part were in good shape with descent lies and a few thin areas. Rough was mostly nice lush green grass with some thin dormant grass and some bare spots. Was in two greenside bunkers that were both in very nice shape with a good amount of sand. Greens were in good shape, soft, medium pace and rolling smooth. A few of the green complexes had some new sod around them which is still filling in. Overall course is in descent shape for So. Cal winter.

Obtained an online tee time from Teeoff.com for $33 riding at 11:32. Good help from the pro shop got me out right away after arriving at 11:10.

Obtained an online tee time from Teeoff.com for $33 riding at 11:32. Good help from the pro shop got me out right away after arriving at 11:10.

I was paired with a single and a twosome, we followed a group of five for four hours. Not a bad POP and it was a nice afternoon. One guy from the group ahead even apologized to me in the parking lot. Hey, not necessary but thanks!

Greens: They were firm and medium fast. I made many putts from the 10'-20' range so I could say they ran true and there were no unexpected breaks. Not a lot of ball marks either.

Fairways and rough: Mostly dormant paspallum and kikuyu with some areas of nice fescue. Everything was mowed to a manageable height and I had no problems with any lies except under the trees on the right side of 18 where it was bare ground.

Tees: We played the blues and they were all level and had decent coverage.

Bunkers: I was in three bunkers. All had good amounts of sand but greenside on three where it was a little thin.

All in all, it was well worth the $33 riding today.

Played the Blacks (5826/68.3/117) in 3H. Perfect golf weather, clear, breezy and in the 70's. For those of you that have played here over the years, the change in this course is remarkable. 5+ years ago, the fairways were consistently a mess. Many different grasses and it was not uncommon to have 1+ fairways having huge sections playing as GUR for months at a time. It has taken a few years for them to fully convert, but today, the Paspalum fairways are nearly immaculate. Like their sister course Olivas, from a distance the fairways almost look like Astroturf. Lush with almost complete coverage everywhere with good roll out on drives. The Bermuda tees were in good shape with almost all the divot damage already properly maintained. The Kikuyu rough is lusher closer to the fairways/greens, thinner the farther you are from the fairway. Some turf reduction wood chip areas around some of the trees and farther away from the fairways on a few holes. Overall, it's not high but it's still Kikuyu. The difference in barely staying in the fairways and getting roll and barely hitting the rough and stopping in the Kikuyu can be 40-50 yards. The sand traps had nice sand and were decently maintained. The greens putted medium fast. Relatively smooth and mostly firm, they held approach shots very well. The customer service was excellent as always here. No drink cart, no GPS on the basic carts but the sprinklers are well marked. Nice snack stand with good burgers and their drinks are good AD. The tree lined fairways with zero houses around are a plus for me. And the trees consistently come into play here. The greens are undulating with crowns and you need to know where to not miss it and shape shots to score well on this shorter course. Definitely recommended.

Rode the Blacks yesterday 8/21/17 joined by my buddy Nickesquire. Could not pass up the free points that Buena has given me over the years so I played 36 holes for free in around 7 hours total--can't beat that. We had a beautiful day to play with temps in the 70's and maybe a 1 to 1.5 club wind--perfect conditions. Buena runs there all day twilight rates Monday's so if you are a Monday player I would check it out due to the current conditions. No range to warm up on but they have cages and a putting green.

Shorter, tighter tree line layout with undulating greens, afternoon wind and kikuyu tees and rough spread throughout. Always great staff here--Vicki in the pro-shop is a gem.

The fairways-well they are just flat out a treat--just have to rate them an 8.5 which is high for a muni but spot on. Little to no divots(those we saw were filled with sand), perfect lush lies in the fairways and even though thick you still get some roll out if you are a low ball hitter. Higher drives to do not get much roll out here. Fairways are the highlight of the course.

The rough is thicker, grabby kikuyu--would not say that long but can nestle greenside and make chipping kind of tough. Rough was in uniform good shape. Rating the rough 7.5/10.

Was in 5 bunkers over 36 holes, all raked and containing beach sand--Nick had one fried egg and I was lucky to have none. Bunkers rated 7/10.

The greens were in a lot better shape this week than last week. They rolled a little firmer this week and still contained ball marks from others. Minimal bounces and held any type of iron very well--very soft is a good description for the greens. We must have still fixed an extra 3-4 ball marks per green. Rating the greens a 6.5/10.

The tees were in very nice shape. So lush you need a strong tee to keep the tee in the ground. Mostly all the tees are level and the par 3's even are pretty well kept. Tees 7.5/10

With the free rounds it was a no brainer today--would recommend Buena if you want to work on bending the driver around doglegs, work on shorter and mid iron play and deal with windy conditions in the afternoon.

Course is in real good shape. Enjoy

Played the Blacks (5826/68.3/117) with GDR23 in clear, fairly calm conditions in the 70's. We played 36 holes as a 2some in 7 hours on a "throwback Monday" that reminded me of when Gary/I did this on a regular basis. Also "throwback" because Gary threw out an 11 birdie 67-69 performance that reminded me of some rounds 10+ years ago we played together. Buena is a easy course to walk, shorter, few hills, no long walks between tee boxes. Fun, shorter course that is tougher than first impressions because of trees, tightness and the usual 1-2 club ocean breeze. No range, they only have a couple of cages to warm up in. The Bermuda tees were in very good shape with almost all the divot damage already properly maintained. The Paspalum fairways were immaculate. Lush with almost complete coverage everywhere. 2nd round of the 36 hole beautiful day of golf. Rode the Blacks (68.3-117-5826) on 8/14/2017 teeing off around 2:45pm with my buddy Nickesquire, my buddy Mack and his buddy Brian. POP was 4 hrs 10 minutes waiting for most of the day on the group in front of us. Weather was perfect low 70's and breezy(1-2 club wind). Paid their standard twilight rate of $25.00. Great staff inside pro-shop. Buena has a putting green and some nets to warm up. They really got the fairways going on here. This is the nicest that I have seen the fairways in some time. Nick and I were commenting these were the best fairways we have seen here ever. Going to rate them an 8.5/10. Ball sitting up perfectly. Lush but contained some great roll out. Perfect combo. Fairly any divots. The bunkers have pure white marble sand and the two I were in were a pleasure to hit out of (greenside #8 and #18). Rated 8/10. The rough is very lush and thick here. It seems its mostly Kikuyu. Chipping and pitching can be tough out of it greenside. Very healthy stuff in good shape. Rated 8/10. Tees were beautiful, mostly all level Kikuyu tees. rated 8/10 The greens were the only real disappointment. They were not horrible but they were super bumpy, thick, grainy and to make putts you had to rip the ball and hope to get the right bounce--lol. To me they just need to be cut and rolled. I did not see or notice an abundant amount of ballmarks so I think with a good cut they would be much better. Overall I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the course was looking. Recommended.

Played the Blacks (5826/68.3/117) in slightly over 4H with GDR23, Mack & Brian, VERY enjoyable group to play with. The weather was overcast, in the 70's and fairly calm. The Bermuda tees were in very good shape with almost all the divot damage already properly maintained. The fairways were immaculate. Definitely the best I have ever seen the fairways @ Buena, they looked and played as good as Olivas fairways, which is a high standard locally. Lush with almost complete coverage everywhere. The rough is mowed down, few lost ball areas which is great for POP. Lusher closer to the fairways/greens, thinner the farther you are from the fairway. The sand traps had nice sand, but too many players here do not rake properly. While from tee to green the course was in excellent condition, the greens were disappointing. Medium speed, kind of bumpy with their normal amount of ball marks. We had all played the firm, smooth, much faster greens on RR Lakes in the morning, so our entire 4some had challenges adjusting. They did hold approach shots very well. The customer service was excellent as usual, No drink cart, no GPS on the basic carts but the sprinklers are well marked. Nice snack stand with good burgers and their drinks are good AD. Played Saturday morning 6/24 with an 8:27 tee time. Cost of the round was $45 as a Ventura County resident. POP was right around 4 hours without having to wait on many shots, playing as a foursome.

This is an easy course to walk with the tee boxes being next to many of the greens and the only distance between green and tee is 11 and 12, but it's not a very long walk.

Tee boxes were in good shape, divots on a good portion on the front side, but they also have several driveable holes, so I assume the shorter hitters prefer to lay up with an iron. Mostly level. Fairways were in great shape lush with not many bare areas to be found, and the ball sat up perfectly.

Rough was an inch to two inches long fairly lush, some bare spots, but not many. Could be a pain around the green if the ball was sitting down to get decent chips to stop near the hole, but I am by no means great at chipping. Bunkers were soft and had more than enough sand to blast out of. One or two of them looked damp and somewhat harder packed, but that was only by observation.

Greens putted true and rolled at a medium to fast pace. Not many balls marks to be found

Overall I really enjoy this course and as mentioned before there are several chances to hit up next to the green or even onto it on the front side as there are 4 par 4's on the front that are all around 300 yards, and the course doesn't ever really seem to be in poor shape. I will be returning in the future.

I participated in a scramble Saturday, 6/24, teeing off around 2:00 on the sixth hole. Weather conditions were excellent — comfortably warm with light to moderate breeze trailing off late in the round. I thought the all around playing conditions for this course were excellent. Tee boxes had good coverage and were level. Maybe one tee where I felt the need to find the most level spot, but minimal as a teeing factor. Fairways are in nice shape— green and offering good lies as well as reasonable rollout. I didn't notice an bare spots in the fairway-adjacent rough, which was generally playable and less punitive just off the fairways, and a bit fuller near the greens. Only in one bunker, it was well groomed and firmer vs. fluffy. The greens were very nice, running the quick side of medium. Probably an appropriate speed given the undulations on many of the greens would make really quick greens problematic. They were a nice surface that tracked well. I only get to play here intermittently over the recent years, but I think it's in as good a shape all around right now as I can remember it. A shorter but interesting course that is generally flat and easy to walk. Definitely recommended.
