Played 11-29-14 first out as a single walking in a little under three hours taking my time. Tee boxes are a mix of good and bad, they are working on some of them so hopefully they will improve. Fairways are not in the best of shape. The areas that are nice is like hitting off carpet, unfortunately there are a lot of not so nice areas. Rough is hit and miss from not to long to some areas being 3-4 inches mostly around the greens. Sand traps are firm packed sand. Greens are rolling pretty good with medium/fast speed. Overall course is not as good as in the past but it looks like they are putting in the effort to improve it. They are running a special right now if you buy a $100 gift card the give you a pass for a free round thats good any day anytime.

This is one of my very favorite courses ! I have played here since the course first opened and have never been disappointed ...... until today. The staff was perfect as always. but I have never seen the course in such poor condition. The greens were decent enough, but many of the fairways and tee boxes were just simply not good. Thin, bare, not level, etc. Maybe its the drought ? Sure hope this is a temporary condition, as this course has always been near the top of my list of courses I enjoy playing.

That said, still had a great time. First off, zipped around in about 2 1/2 hours and totally had a great time !

Played 10-3-14 mid morning for $24 walking(players club rate) as a single with no waiting in under 3 hours. Tee boxes are in good shape. They have re-done the middle tee box on three. It is still roped off, but looks much nicer then it has in a long time. Fairways are in good shape with a few brown spots. Rough is 1 to 2 inches with some spots a little longer around the greens. Sand traps have plenty of sand and are in good shape. Greens are healing nicely from punching, another week or so and they should be real nice.

Our second round of the day was at good old LaP. I thought I was heading up the coast to escape the heat, but it was crazy hot in Lompoc at just under 100 degrees when we teed off at 1:45. The wind picked up as always and that cooled things down as the day went on, though. We had booked a $39 GN hot deal and my friend had a 2-for-1 promo reward, so you can't beat this course for $19.50 each! The pace was good on a relatively busy afternoon. We picked up a couple singles along the way and finished in a little over 4 hours. I was a little underwhelmed with the conditions. Though mostly in decent shape, it's definitely a bit rough around the edges here. There were a lot of thin/bare spots scattered throughout the fairways. I'd say fairways were 85% great (as in perfect lush lies) and then 15% bad. The rough is clearly not getting as much attention amidst the drought, so you never know what kind of lie you'll find. Some very lush green sections that swallow up your ball and some very ugly patchy and bare dirt spots, too. Front nine greens had a light top coat of sand, but it didn't affect play. The back nine greens were nicer and greener, but got pretty bumpy late in the day. Overall, the greens were rolling well at medium speeds. Not bad, but certainly not the lightning fast La Purisima surfaces the course is known for. I was in a couple bunkers late and they both had good sand. Just the way I like it, a little crusty on top but soft underneath. La Purisima is always a stern test of your golf game. Wonderful layout in a great setting, so any minor condition issues can easily be overlooked. Still one of my favorites. I don't think I'd want to play here every day, but I hope to keep coming back once a year to take on the challenge.

What can you add to what has already been said about La Purisima, just so much fun and a great golf challenge. When you play LP, it's you against the course, baby. You pay dearly for any miss hit, and every hole is tough if you miss the fairway or miss the green. I played 36 on the second day (Sat.) of a club Ryder Cup challenge and a challenge it was, especially during the afternoon round when the wind came up. Greens early morning were a bit damp so not very fast by LP standards. Balls rolled very predictable when taking that into account. Fairways held some shots and most lies were very good. Of course, all that changed during the afternoon round. There is a grass fungus which I did notice has increased since my visit last month. I hope they get a handle on it soon before it affects play as right now it's just unsightly, but it's spreading. The bunkers I visited were somewhat thin, but very manageable and easy to play from. Rough: brutal, as usual. ALWAYS worth the drive, and deals are available.

Played July 29. Just an unbelievable course! This place was once considered for the PGA Championship but they decided the location was too remote. This place just oozes major championship golf. Not a single weak hole. A golf purist Heaven. Genius, straight forward, fair design. No buildings or homes. Will not allow you to play a poor shot. Great views. Greens were perfect. Fairways great in most spots, but patchy in others. Rough thick and punitive. Hard to believe they put a course in such a remote location, but the result is spectacular. I really hope they can generate enough traffic to bring the revenue to keep the cost low and conditions pristine. I would say if you are within two hours, go play and then spread the word. La P used to be in the top 100 and no doubt it should return. An over-used phrase lately, but this is PURE GOLF at its best.

On first tee , the course was shrouded in mist..very cool. Nice wide opening par5.... Love that. Turf was nice in fairways with some rough spots, clean poa greens in very nice shape--running around 10. Areas around the greens were spotty sometimes, thick wet rough made wrist hinging chip shots a must have. A great design...front 9 had some straightforward holes and some super nice dog legs with contours and Oaks, revealing beautiful greens on approach. Wonderful topography here. Back 9 was brutal to this first time visitor. I played blue @ 6700 yes or so.....front was no prob, back was another animal...I hear they call the course the Piraña.....well it ate my A$$. Tip -- on 14 you can take it over the trees with a fade and be fine. Back 9 for me was even better in terms of enjoying the course design. Great stuff back there. GpS system was nice although, I couldn't figure out how to adjust for different yardages.....as in, what will my approach yardage be if I hit to a specific area. It was however very helpful in determining what to hit on most holes. In its heyday this course must have been amazing. As another poster has mentioned, it just doesn't get enough play (income) to keep it in top notch resort style shape....but do not for a second believe that this detracts from the experience. WELL WORTH the trip. I plan on bringing people out here as part of a central coast golf trip in the future. Hopefully the course continues to maintain what it has and not wither away like so many others have.

Got a chance to play one of my favorites this morning 7/28/14 with RGM2525. We played 36 holes with a nice lunch inside the newer restaurant that I had not visited yet. I walked the first 18 and then we took a cart for the 20 dollar replay---so worth it. The greens are outstanding at this time. I have seen them faster but I have not seen them this clean and nice. Not really any ballmarks at all. Holding irons with spin---putting probably to a 10 on the stimp. Afternoon round showed more speed on the greens. The fairways are in great shape, lush green grass ball sitting up nicely. There are a few brown spots here and there but nothing to gripe about and no hardpan areas. I was in 4 bunkers the whole day and the sand was nice, raked and semi-firm...no issues. The tees were lush and green. Only a couple boxes made you hunt for a level stance. The rough oh my...If you have ever played here you know that a well struck drive down the middle might hit a slope in the fairway and roll you only a foot or two into the rough....You have to know this going in and just grit your teeth and roll with it...to say the rough is challenging would be correct...as my buddy who is a member here said it best its a club grabber and sometimes you have to club up two clubs on approach from the rough. Pace of play was great---we finished both rounds in 3 hours each...staff here is great and this is one of the toughest courses you can find....I love the peace and quiet, views and challenge of Purisma....highly recommended.

Just had to take a short road trip with a couple buds and the first stop was La Purisima near Lompoc. What a fantastic layout and beautiful setting for a golf course. Conditions were very good to excellent tee to green. Rough, however, can be scrappy, it was cut to a reasonable length but still quite a challenge. Greens rolled true, medium speed today. If you've played it, then you'll be glad to hear they are making every effort to maintain the course in the high standard which it's known throughout the west coast golf community. Even with the drive and remoteness, it's worth the effort. Play it, you'll not be disappointed. Just remember the wind comes up and changes everything ... added 5 strokes to my back nine, not kidding.
