While in the area, Eaglee and I decided to play a second round. I've been looking for an excuse to play La Purisima again. The only other time I played here was quite a few years ago and I loved it then. We had a 2pm tee time, but were running late after a longer-than-expected round at Alisal, but I called on the way and the guy in the pro shop didn't seem concerned. When we got there, we realized why. Hardly anyone out there, so we were in no rush. Wanted to grab a quick bite to eat, but they were already closing up the snack bar/grill so had to settle for a Powerbar from the pro shop. Otherwise, we teed off around 2:15 as a twosome. There were twosomes in front of us and a twosome behind us, so it was a nice overall pace of about 3:45. The course was in pretty good overall shape, highlighted by the greens. They were perfection! Soft/spongy surfaces, but silky smooth and pure on putts. Very quick speeds, but not quite as frighteningly fast as my other visit. Shame they are getting ready to aerate next week, but I'm sure they'll be coming back just as strong in a few weeks. The fairways were mostly good. Many were excellent and others not so much with more thin areas to contend with. The rough was very spotty. Around the greens it was thick and lush. Around the fairways it was hit or miss. Some good areas and some terrible patches. When you are not on a fairway here, be sure and watch your step. There are a lot of holes, lumps and bumps and we both almost turned our ankles several times. If driving a cart, keep it on the fairways or on the dirt paths (where there are paths). Going through rough is a painful and bumpy ride! Sand traps good. Greenside bunkers had a nice top layer to work with and fairway bunkers kept firmer, which is how it should be. Though a little rough around the edges right now, this is still one of the best courses in Southern California. One of the most challenging and unrelenting layouts, and local knowledge is definitely helpful on many holes when deciding where to aim your tee shots. Look forward to my next battle with the course, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later this time around!

Played in a tourney today teeing off at 10:00 am. Pace of play was poor but that was the fault of the tourney not the course. It was wide open except for us. Course conditions were nice. Lush fairways and rough. The rough could be punitive. The greens were fast but not lightening and held well. That was good because the pin positions were brutal. Extremely difficult. The course kicked my butt. Some of it was not playing it for many years. For example, I thought I hit a perfect drive on a back nine par five and ended up driving into the junk.

I was a little disappointed in the amenities. The bar/coffee shop closed at 3:00 which meant no post round libation. They were also slow on the mid-round hot dog. Otherwise, the course personnel were extremely helpful and professional.

The course is a gem. I never minded playing that bad.

I was first off the tee yesterday, played by myself in about 2.5 hrs. Other courses take note: this is how you do customer service right. Pro shop attendant only charged me twilight rate because she said they were going to be verticutting a few greens. Then one of the greenskeepers approached me and apologized for the conditions I'd encounter on those holes. He offered to let me play the front nine twice, but I wanted to play the whole course because it was my first time here. He later caught up to me on the course and offered again to let me play the front twice, in addition to playing the back. Long story short, they made me feel like they valued me as a customer and definitely understand how important course conditions are to their customers. Overall the course was in good shape. It was misty and quite wet so early, which called for increased precision (that I lacked) when hitting irons off the fairways. Greens were very smooth but running quite slow ... the reason they cited for the verticutting. The rough was nasty, in a good way, putting a premium on keeping your ball on the fairway. I loved the layout, but might enjoy it even more a second time. I was surprised some holes are a bit tricky and definitely would benefit from local/course knowledge.

Played 7/12/13. First time here. Overall, spectacular. I absolutely loved this layout. I had to walk the course, as they had a tournament a little later that required all carts. Not the easiest course to walk, but I think you generally get a better feel for the layout by walking. Also played alone, so as first timer, had a little trouble navigating a few holes, Numbers 2, 8, 12 and 15 come to mind, but next time around, I'll be ready. very non-descript clubhouse / proshop and grill, in a obscure location, but very well conditioned course in every way, with exception of the driving range. A couple of tee boxes were a little unlevel, and some had many unrepaired divots. Since only one group out earlier than me, they must have been from previous day or before. Fairways showed a few brown spots but otherwise were near perfect. A little on soft side, but I figured from being out early and some dampness still on grass contributed to this more than anything else. Greens were exceptional, rolling as smooth as any I could recall anywhere. If you can see the greens, you can read them. Nothing mysterious. Pick a line and roll it. Layout is spectacular. Some rolling elevation changes amongst the hills and oaks. Lots of wildlife (deer, coyotes, hawks) and very picturesque from just about every hole. Very good challenge. I decide to play whites, primarily due to inexperience here, but even at 6187 yds, a tough course (71.1 and 130). I could imagine how tough this course would be from a longer set of tees during the more windy afternoon hours. An instant classic in my book and quite possibly the best value anywhere. $35 for a Friday morning time. I would much prefer to place this 4 times than pay to play one round in somewhat overpriced tracks south of Lompoc...Can't wait to get back, HIGHLY recommend in you happen to be in the area. If not, well worth a overnight stay and two rounds. Enjoy.

Took a trip up the Central Coast for my birthday and played La Purisima on 7/03 with my wife. The greens are fast and in excellent shape. The fairways for the most part were in good shape, there were a handful of brown patches on a few holes, but not a big deal. The rough here is thick and nasty. If your ball isn't sitting up, you're going to have to muscle the ball out. The sandtraps were disappointing, as I was in a few greenside bunkers and they were real compact, almost concrete like. Tee boxes were hit and miss, probably more neglected on some holes than they should be. The pace of play was a little under 4 hours, we passed up a slow 4-some and didn't see another group throughout our round. This course has a new owner and I hope he has the wisdom to keep it a quality course in the Central Coast area. A couple minor turn offs were there is no cart girl and the restaurant is closed Monday thru Wednesday...So bring a sandwich and plenty of liquids. Also, we were playing midday and on one of the holes a greenskeeper was watering the green as we were playing the hole. It was like a river running through the green and we couldn't even play a 2nd shot. Bad timing, I guess. Lot of tractors maintaining the course which was at times distracting, but again it could've just been the time of day. We got a great deal, and the course is a beast, to say the least. If you have never played here before, get an App that details the layout, because there is no GPS.

Course is in great shape especially the greens firm, fast, and smooth. fairways nice with a few areas being repaired from coot damage mainly number 2 by the lake. rough in good shape 2-3 inches sometimes a little longer around the greens. sand is thick and heavy and in great shape. tee boxes in good shape except for #3 the par three always thin and uneven. course has been sold and new owners took over on 6-11.

Played 36 over Memorial Day weekend as part of a four-day golf trip. Course was in good shape and POP was great. Very windy all day, but particularly in the afternoon. It made a tough course too tough for our group, but we had fun nonetheless. We rode, but walking this course would wear out a mountain goat. We were told that the place is in escrow, and that the new owners plan to fix it up a bit, like paving the cart paths.

Difficult to be objective because this is one of my favorite courses. The greens did not look good, but they rolled great. Since I played first off, still a lot of moisture in the greens, so not as quick as they would be later in the day. With warm temps and 25+ winds tomorrow, these greens ought to be a real challenge for the US Open qualifier on Wednesday. Fairways were at times a bit suspect, but very playable. Otherwise the course was very nice . The staff was fantastic. 240 miles from home, otherwise I would play here a lot, even though the course kicked my butt today.

played 36 on may 4th with fireballa and his buddy. golf course is in really good shape right now. tee boxes level and in good condition except for #3 which needs leveling. fairways in great shape lies are close to perfect. rough is between 2-4 inches not to difficult to hit from but some timesthe ball will settle down to the bottom. sand traps in good shape heavy firm sand easy to hit out of. one of the best parts about this course are the greens alittle firm and rolling medium fast. its so nice to putt on greens where the ball rolls true without any bouncing. the wind always picks up here mid morning which brings an added challenge to an already very tough course. this is a must play course and with the shape it is in well worth playing.
