Played the Blues (6530/71.6/127) twilight in 4H on an excellent discounted deal through Teeoff.com for $22 with a cart. Matched up with Gary & Walter for a fun round. The weather was perfect, low 70's and breezy. Some of the nicest tee boxes I have played on in some time. Lush, very nicely maintained. All the par 3 tee divots had been recently sanded/filled. The fairways were excellent overall. VERY lush, firm, mowed down that produced much roll but still had excellent coverage. Anything close to questionable was marked as GUR for the upcoming Ventura City Championship. The rough around the fairway has started to grow up again. I lost 2 balls today on the 1st bounce out of the fairway straight into calf deep kikuyu. There are patches everywhere of very deep rough that you cannot play out of and will only find your ball if you step on it. 15+ yards off the fairway, the rough is not nearly as severe as it used to be. The native grass that used to be knee deep is now just ankle deep or dead. You will get a combination of hardpan, lush grass, native weeds and deep native rough that will test you because you never know what to expect. You could have 3 errant shots within 5 yards of each other and 1 could be lost, 1 is whack it out with a short iron and the other a solid lie on hardpan than can be advanced a relatively good distance. The traps were good, well maintained with good quality sand. You rarely leave a normal deep ball mark here, just dents in the green because they are very firm. The greens had tons of pitch marks. Perhaps because players do not see a full blown ball mark, they do not repair less severe pitch marks? Golfers, dents need to be fixed just as much as full fledged divots or they die and leave a pot mark later. The net result is that on a 20' putt I was routinely repairing 3-4 pitch marks relatively close to my line. The greens putted well once I fixed the pitch marks, firm & medium fast. The customer service is always good here, we got off right on time. Excellent grass driving range complete with a good chipping and sand practice area. Huge putting green that is very comparable to the course (minus all the pitch marks). Excellent value, especially for the conditions.

Obviously Olivas is one of GK's favorite courses, but I had never played there until today. I'd seen pictures, stopped by one time to take a glance, and was never all that impressed or compelled to play it. But GK'ers rave about the place, so I figured I needed to check this one off the list. I finally did today when my son and I had a 2:27 tee time, and oh man am I glad I did. It far surpassed my expectations. What a terrific, fun, demanding yet playable course. (Of course it helped we had an incredible price of $20 each with cart thanks to TeeOff.com's 40% off sale on the Monday following the PGA Championship.) Conditions were excellent. I rated it eights across the board. The greens rolled good although late in the day they looked a little beat up. They held full shots with no problem and rolled medium fast speed. The first fairway was sopping with casual water but the other 17 were great. The staff deserves a lot of credit for very clearly spray painting any suspect areas of fairway as GUR. I didn't find any, but it was comforting to know that if you do, you won't get screwed by it. The rough was good, too. I was in one bunker and it was good. Tee boxes were consistently good. Back to the layout, I loved the visual trickery of the bunker complex on the par-5 14th that looks like it is right in front of the green but is actually around 40 yards short. Also, we were fortunate to arrive at the par-3 17th about an hour before sundown and with it bathed in gorgeous sunlight. Up to Ventura this past weekend for a club event and got out on Olivas on 8/20 & 8/23. Thursday's round was early and PoP was 4hrs. walking, the pro shop guy was cool and charged me resident rates ($36, I think). Course was in great shape, fairways were like carpet and greens regular speed to quick with undulation requiring considerable commitment. Some dry areas, ponds are all dried up, but mostly very good condition tee to green. Very walkable course with some thought needed on a few holes, but the majority of the course is right in front of you and the only guesswork occurs when the wind comes up, like it did on Sunday afternoon, a much slower round (5+ hrs).

I'd play here often if I live nearby, a real gem. The only 'complaint' is there is no clubhouse, just a couple of trailers ... with no future plan to build one. Highly recommended.

Some of the greens were super firm, #4 came to mind. Fairways in very good shape lush ball sitting up for the most part. Little seeds of fertilizer on the fairways. Bunkers good shape plenty of beach sand. Tees cut tight and lush great shape.

Played Sunday morning 7/26 at 930am. Oddly I had a tee time confirmation but it wasn't in their system when I arrived. Had no problem getting me out on time however. POP 4.25 hours. Seemed to be playing faster. Shot my best score on this course today. In fact was -1 after the front nine but managed to screw that up the back nine.

Conditions here are still outstanding. Best conditions on a public course <$100 in all of S. Cali hands down. Tee boxes are near immaculate. Mowed very short with excellent coverage. Only a few uneven lies on a few holes. Can't ask for much better. Very confidence inspiring on your drives.

Fairways are again excellent. Great coverage, mowed short, green with some hints of brown. I have noticed some browning out areas compared to when I last played here a month ago but not an issue at all.

Not much rough on this course. Most of it was in very good shape.

Greens complexes were very good as well. Sand good, nice thick rough around the greens. There were few aprons that they seem to be readying for seeding but they didn't come into play for me. Greens were very good, almost no ball marks. Medium speed as usual for Olivas.

Great course.

Played the blues (6530/71.6/127). We got an excellent discounted deal through Teeoff.com for $16 with a cart, played with Kviser & RGM2525 Friday afternoon. The weather was perfect, 70ish, little wind. POP was 4H, 30M as we occasionally waited. The greens had lots of ball marks. However, they still putted well once you fixed the ball marks, firm & medium fast. The traps were good, well maintained with good sand. The fairways were VERY lush, mowed down with decent coverage. A few marked GUR areas, but excellent overall. Some of the best fairways I have played in awhile. The rough around the fairway has been shaved down. In many areas. the native grass that used to be knee deep is now just ankle deep or dead. Nicely maintained for a links style layout, you will get a combination of hardpan, lush grass, native weeds and deep native rough that will test you because you never know what to expect. The tees were in very good shape overall, nicely maintained & lush. All the par 3 tee divots had been recently sanded/filled. The customer service as usual was excellent, we got off on time. The layout is less challenging now that the lakes are dry and much of the native rough is mowed down or dead, quite a difference from 5 years ago. Excellent value, especially for the conditions.

Played Olivas yesterday 7/13/2015 at 2:28pm with my buddy Pedro for 18 bucks with Teeoff.com promo code. POP was 4 hours 35 minutes behind many groups. Course is in very good shape. Fairways semi-lush cut tight very few problem areas. Greens are rolling slower than expected but in good shape--we fixed numerous ballmarks. Some portions of the front of some greens are punched and sanded in a very small area. Bunkers contained nice soft sand--some bunkers are wetter and firmer than others. Tee boxes are lush and in very good shape---couple par 3 tees un-level but not to bad. Staff great, layout great, weather was very windy and challenging but nice and cool. Recommended.

Played with Queen of Wedge Woods, Gunnz & Clutch on very nice day. The course remains in good shape with nice tight fairways , putting greens rolling about 9 little slow for my taste but the are consistent hole to hole. Tee boxes are very lush and level with almost no divots.

Bunkers could use little more sand I was in two of them and was very disappointed that no one seems to rake them after hitting there shots. I was in the fairway bunker on #9 and was in divot, the bottom of the divot was hard pan mud. I look at 5 different types of shoe imprints in this one bunker! Really, come we know that you are special but please rake the bunker when your done playing out of it.

Some of the rough is now knee high and I lost ball after pushing my tee shot right on 18 , I lost my ball and lost my match but that is my fault not the roughs.

Great deal this week starting 7/13 to 7/16 after 2pm $25 with cart.
