Ontime tee-off at 11:25, 1/14/14. POP 4 1/4 hrs. Greens smooth, fast and receptive. Great conditions for winter play. Light winds all day often switching btwn Santa Anas and onshore flow. Native grasses in rough cut back. Pond left of 13th is dried up and reeds/grasses cut down (ugh). Senior rates at $21, all day TUES.

Played Friday 1/3/14. Teed off right on time at 8:36. POP 4.5 hrs. Course was in very good "winter condition". Dormant fairways recently fertilized/dyed which improved the visual. Great rolls and just enough turf to yield acceptable lies (never had a bad lie in the fairway). Good tee boxes (level, no significant divot damage, and full coveage) and the greens were rolling smooth and receptive to approaches (greens were best part of course). Seems that most of the taller grasses have been cut down/back yielding a friendlier course. Really enjoyed the course and will get back soon.

Teed off at 7 am this morning (Black Friday, 11/29/13) at Olivas Links. Got around in about 3:50, which is always nice. It did feel a little slower than that, just because I was paired with one other single behind a few fours. But they were all keeping a decent pace, so we didn't really wait too much. Greens were very nice, but I do have to agree with a previous reviewer that mentioned the amount of unprepared pitch marks. There really did seem to be quite a few, which was a tad disappointing. I thought just about every other aspect of the pace was great, fairways were very nice, tees and rough pretty good too. I avoided all of the bunkers, but they did look good. I get down here about once a year, and Olivas is always a great time.

Tees: Tips

Weather: Cold wind 10 mph- 65 degrees or so.

Greens: 7/10 I was surprised the greens were quicker and in better shape than I thought. Have not played out here for a little while. They were rolling better today than last round. There are still some ballmarks present and you will not get a perfect roll but I thought they were in good shape.


Fairways 6/10. They are brown doormant with super thin lies. Not my favorite type of turf and tough to hit irons from. With that being said we all got an extra 20 yds on drives. This is probably not the time of year to play Olivas if you want nice fairways. This course has some of the nicest fairways in the summer.

Tees: 7/10 Cut thin semi firm turf, some divot damage on the 3 pars.

Sand: Was not in any bunkers but they looked beautiful as usual with thick white beach sand.

Rough 8/10 Green and lush and a nice contrast in color from the fairways.


We sped around the course today in 3 and half hours walking the back tees. Great staff and practice areas--decent price but will probably hold off on playing here as much over the winter and wait for the spring and summer for the fairways to grow in some.

Played 10-31-13 in the afternoon. Course was not that crowded and got around in a little over 4 hours. Tee boxes mostly level and in good shape. Fairways are on the firm side with a lot of roll and tight lies. Rough is pretty lush in most places with a few bare spots here and there. Sand traps are always in good shape here, with a lot of nice white sand.
Greens where on the slow side and a little bumpy.

Played Olivas Links with my buddy and GK member Barkydog1. Mostly all aspects of the course are in very good condition right now.

Bunkers: 8.5/10 Soft white beach sand that you really need to thump to make a good shot

Greens 8/10 Firmer than I expected, rolling pretty nice, some old ballmarks present but in pretty good shape.

Tees: 8.5/10 Green, semi lush cut low

Fairways 8/10 They are green cut low and thin and produced some tight lies. For me I like a little more cushion under the ball but overall great presentation.

Rough: 8/10 Semi lush, green couple inches thick.

Always windy in the afternoon which presents a good challenge.

Played here Sunday afternoon with the LA Golf Group and we had fun as always. The course was in decent condition, not the best I've ever seen it. The fairways were a little more dried out—super firm and lies were very tight. It might not look quite as pretty, but it makes the course more interesting as it plays like a true links layout with lots of roll-out and more trouble brought into play. The greens were a bit bumpy in places in the afternoon and rolling a bit slower than I've experienced in the past, so I was leaving many putts short. The rough was lush, but a little clumpy in the areas I found so the ball would always sit down awkwardly amongst the tufts of grass. Always a fun course. The wide open front nine lulls you into a false sense of self confidence and then the back nine quickly humbles you with some tougher holes. Staff friendly as always, but no beverage cart on the course on a busy Sunday afternoon seemed questionable. Could use more drinking water out on the course, too. The bathroom area with the one drinking station is a bit out of the way for walkers.

Played yesterday, 8/25/13, with the LA Golf Group league in the afternoon. The course was in decent shape. Lush fairways and rough. A couple of fairways had been overwatered in places, leaving very soggy conditions in a couple of places. Not too terrible, but notable. The greens were a little bumpy at times due to being soft, with lots of spike marks/footprints, and poorly repaired ball marks. I think this may be a pattern in the afternoon at many courses. Also--my pet peeve--sunflower seeds on the greens and tee boxes. Come on, really? Smoke a cigarette or take up baseball. The one bunker I was in (greenside on 3) was a little thin. A couple of landing areas on some fairways had been well divotized. Great pace of play at about 4 1/2 hrs. walking and looking for lost balls. Sorry, it might have been faster if we weren't looking and just dropping, but we were trying to make a score. Overall, I think the course was in good condition and good times were had by all.

Tees and POP: Blue and 4:45 min

Weather- 15 mph wind to start, died down some on back nine---mid 60's

Greens 7.5/10---The greens were firmer here today than some of my last several rounds here. They held on line more today than several rounds ago. There are still an ample amount of ballmarks on some of the par 3's and some greens that get plastered with some short irons in but overall I thought they were an improvement from last couple times out.

Fairways: 8/10... Green, semi firm and semi lush and in very nice shape.

Tees: 8.5/10 Cut low, perfect level tees with great lush grass...only tee #17 placement was sloped

Bunkers: 8.5/10 White beach sand, raked and in great condition

Layout and Overall: Some holes to score on the front nine and some really great challenges on the back nine in the afternoon, always a fun round here begging you to come back. For sure a summer course, they raised their rates a little. Course is becoming very popular especially with the current conditions and summer climate.
