played 3-14 in the afternoon with johnnygk, longball23, and golf musician. weather was a bit of a surprise coming from the valley where it was upper 80s but weather at the course was overcast and mid 50s. great fun layout to this course which will make up for the course not being in the best of shape right now. for me this is more a spring time, summer course. tee boxes where a little thin with some being a little unlevel but you could still find a descent stance. fairways still on the dormant side with thin grass but ok to hit from. first cut of rough is about an inch taller then fairways, but second cut is native grass that they let grow wild and can be anywhere from 3 to 12 inches. greens are on the slow side right now and a little bumpy. found the greens to be a little inconsistent with holding shots some soft and others firm. i know they are going to aaerify the greens next week so i expect them to improve over the next month. guys in the pro shop are always top notch here. even with the course not in the best of shape its still fun to play here.

I played Olivas Links Thursday with longball23, rgm2525 and Golfmusician. We had a super time and got around in 4 hours. My quick take on the course is:

First off: They have an amazing special running this week, Wed – Sunday where if you play the course, you get a complimentary round to use before April 30th. Come mid April Olivas Links will be in very good to great shape and you will be loving the fact you are playing for free. Top it off the round you play this week is discounted. This is the best aeration special I have ever seen.

To the course, overall fair to good condition, greens were a little bumpy, on the slow side for Olivas Links standards yet held shots beautifully; fairways were dormant but there were signs of them starting to perk up, still plenty of grass padding under the ball, no bare areas; rough, less severe than some of my previous rounds but still very punitive and the possibility of a lost ball in it very possible; tee boxes were tight, firm, some divot damage, dormant but good shape; bunkers were well kept with good sand quality and well groomed.

When you play Olivas Links, no matter the weather where you are coming in from, be prepared for overcast/off shore wind. In the summer, coming up to Olivas Links is an oasis from the heat but this time of year it can get chilly.

Great course, like I said, check out the aeration special, recommended.

Weather: Mid to low 60's dense cold fog with anywhere from a 10-15mph wind that came and went every so often

Greens: 5/10 Just a side note that they are punching the greens early next week. At current time they are bumpy with the flatstick, slow chipping wise and contain many ballmarks. Tried to fix my share. They are holding irons somewhat, it was different from green to green. With the scheduled maintenance coming up they should be in good shape in a month or so.

Fairways: 5.5/10...contained many hardpan areas, minor areas of green grass. This is a summer fairway course so at present time expect some roll on drives and some harpan lies in the fairways.

Bunkers: 8.5/10...Was not in any bunkers today but saw that they contained white beach sand, were raked nicely and were soft. I hit about 20 shots in the practice bunker before our round which is similar to the bunkers on the course and it was in very good shape.

Tees: 6/10...Some of the par 3 tees are unlevel but for the most part all par 4 tees and par tees were level. Tees contained some divots but overall were not bad.

Rough 6/10...Just off the fairways on the inside of the cart path the rough is thin...outside of the cartpath the native grasses will eat you up...was glad to not be outside the cart path all day today.

Layout: 8/10...I like this course...you can rip the ball on most holes...holes #11 through #14 along with #16 will test you.

Staff/practice areas: 9/10

Overall 6.5/10----in the summer I usually rate this place a 8.5 but current conditions are not stellar at this time. I like the layout...bring a jacket always when coming to this course.

Got a good deal from Group Golfer for $39, cart, balls, and unlimited play! The over all course was in fair to good condition. This is a links style course so the fairways are as they should be. They were tight and thin with just a little roll, not like Rustic. The moist sea air keeps them a little softer. The fairways are lined by fescue grasses flowing with the natural terrain. Rough was slightly penal but my playing partner and the two guys who were with us made some great shots from it. For some reason I was in it only once? (actually played the same ball all round! very rare for me on that kind of course) The greens showed some were and tear with ball marks occasionally not fixed but rolled true and were a tad on the slow side, I know this because I only three putted once ;) Some of the landing areas, when I actually got to them with a drive, had many divot marks from approach shots, some filled and some not :( They will be aerating next week!! Overall this is by far one of the best courses in So Cal (venture) area. Only an Hour from West La and is worth the drive. PS...WEAR SUNBLOCK!! even if it is cloudy or overcast. It will burn you. Enjoy!!

Played 2/19/13 and 2/14/13 btwn 12pm and 4:30. Fairways & greens were hard and fast. Most roughs were cut back but penalized errant shots. Four of us seniors walked in low 50's temps with 10-15 mph winds; avoided rain onset by 30 minutes. Staff was helpful and courteous as usual. Noon to 5 pm is best time to play on weekdays. Olivas is a favorite for all of us. Driving range uses mats; mats and ball dispenser are new/refurbished. Range is bare and faces into the sun making impacts impacts difficult to discern; also there's no yardage-to-targets posted. Tuesdays feature $20 green fees. One of the best in the Oxnard plain.

Today, I played 18 holes at the Olivas Links club with two greenskeeper members Longball and his buddy. We had a great time, the fair ways were a little hard to hit but the weather was just wonderful (a little windy but not bad). The greens were very decent but very fast. The staff at the Olivas Link club were very friendly and lets us hit earlier then our Tee time.

Played this afternoon 12:04pm tee time walking the blue tees as a foursome as part of the GK North Match Play event with Kviser, Pedro7170 and his buddy Carlos. Last reviewer was spot on unfortunately Olivas needs some TLC at this time. Had not played here since the day after Thanksgiving. The course is very dry, firm and losing some portions of fringes, outside edges of green complexes and of course the fairways like many in the County are suffering through the doormant stage. Fairways were running forever, were very thin and contained hardpan lies thgroughout. The greens were firm to crusty and I though putted a little above average. There were several ball marks that we fixed. The tees were thin and brown but were all level for the most part. The sand bunkers were wonderful with high quality beach sand. Staff inside the pro-shop were pleasant. if I had a word of advice for the fellow golfer is wait until the turf greens up in the spring and summer time. This is for sure a summer course. The 26 bucks walking today might have not even been worth it. Layout is pleasing and challenging with the conditions we played with today....I hope to see you in better shape in a couple months Olivas!

Pros- Course is a nice layout. Always enjoy getting up here 2 or 3 times a year. Fairways are dormant and running out, but lies are ok. Greens are servicable but not amazing. Chairs are nice
Cons- Course is simply run down overall. This course continues to need maturation of hazards. It needs a roller on the greens and it needs some general tlc. Course is always good but just is a little blah right now.
Overall, I will play here 3 times a year.

After laying off of golf for several years I am back at it again and went out to Olivas for my first rounds in at least 3 years. Played Sat (morn) and Sunday (afternoon). Overall the course is in good shape, but it is wet and damp from the recent rains. Fairways and greens were very soft so there is not much roll in the fairways and balls stick on the greens. Boxes are in good shape and are generally flat and not beat up, fairways cut short as well as the aprons around the greens. I like the short cut aprons that give you the option of pitching or running the ball up.

Greens are cut nice and short but they are a bit slow because of the dampness. Sand traps are very nice with quality sand and well groomed. One of the things I really liked about the greens is that they were undulated for a challenge but they had a subtle flatness to them where they had the pins. You had to read in the break to them but around the holes they tended to flatten out a bit so you had to be careful about over reading a put. I think sometimes courses think they have to get too tricky with the pin placement and make them miniature golf like but I really liked how these greens were set up. I used to play Rustic Canyon a lot and sometimes I thought they placed the pins on too much of a slope, but while the greens are interesting they make you true up a put.

I was one of the last groups on Sunday and I get irritated when others don't fix their ball marks, which there were some by the time I played,

Pace of play was excellent on Sat morning and I got done (walking) in 3:45. Sunday was a bit slower but pace was still acceptable until I ran into some kids at sundown on the last hole.

If you like a links style course I would highly recommend you come out and play Olivas. Very nice set up and challenging with the typical afternoon sea breeze. Very friendly staff. They have a range which they don't at Buenventura and the course is a bit longer and challenging than their sister course.
