Finally made it back to Rustic Canyon for just the second time on Sunday and was looking forward to not only a fun, challenging course with nice conditions, but also the chance to knock one of those 'over a hundred' courses off my list. Glad to say all missions accomplished.

Walked the blue tees with a buddy of mine and was paired with two young cats from Santa Monica who played there often and helped us out with useful tips all day long. This course really is unique in the region and it's so fun to try out new approaches to almost every aspect of your game.

Of course the main difference is the large skirts around almost all of the greens here that really invite a lot of bump and run play, but also tempt you to bust out the flat stick from long distances if you're not feeling confident with the chips. But there are also ample natural and waste areas to collect any wayward shots, and numerous strategically placed bunkers to make you think twice before each and every shot. It's a real special place.

The conditions were quite good all around, but the greens are the best part of the place. They weren't lightning fast like I remember them from the first visit here, but they roll true and the contours and angles are quite mesmerizing. Some border on just the outside of absurd, but none that need to be taken to task. They're just difficult and challenging, but fair enough. And they hold shots very well for the most part at medium-fast speeds right now.

Plenty of green in many of the fairways but of course in this part of the Valley you're going to run into a few dry spots here and there, but the lies were mostly always very good. The rough just outside the fairways and around the greens is totally manageable, but get away from that and you're in real trouble with desert disaster. Some really thick stuff too around the greenside bunkers that you do not want to experience.

Speaking of the bunkers, they were good. There was none of that nice, fluffy stuff you'd like to see that makes hitting out of the sand fun even sometimes, but it was sandy enough to not have to pick balls clean even when farther out from the pin than comfortable. Tee boxes were in fine shape all around - no issues there whatsoever.

Cart service was optimal, taking care of us at least 4-5 times throughout the round (and it was a hot day so that was nice). I forgot to bring socks with me for the first time ever, but the pro shop had me covered with five dollar pairs that were just great. And of course the price for this place is actually a steal.

All in all a really great day on the course and even had a very good chance of breaking 80 but then I pulled a me and ruined it with a weak sauce finish, but can't just think of those last three holes when the first fifteen were terrific. Highly recommended right now.

Played 9-19-17 mid afternoon walking for $29 and finishing in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Tee boxes were in nice shape, semi- lush and mostly level. Fairways were in really good shape, probably the greenest I have seen them in a long time and playing very nice. Rough as usual is in bad shape, a lot of bare areas along fairways but pretty descent around greens. Some of the large aprons around the greens did have some small bare spots. Greens were in real good shape, they had just done a light top dress which probably effected speed a little but they still rolled medium/fast and held shot real nice.

Walked the blues (128-71.6-6634) late this morning 9/18/2017 at 11:20am with my buddy Mack joined by a nice single Jim. We paid $29.00 which is their mid-day walking rate Monday through Thursday. Nice staff at check-in. Looks like they have got some newer mats on the driving range. Weather was in the high 70's, low 80's with about a 1 club wind which felt great. POP was 4 hrs 10 minutes waiting for multiple groups out on a busy Monday. Great to get back to my home course after a hot summer.

The greens were in very good shape, rolling fast and firm--resembled the old rustic especially on downhillers. I did fix an extra 3 divots or so per green waiting for the groups in front of us. These greens were a big improvement from what I remember from a couple rounds ago. They held shots like darts yet were quick and rolling true. Rated 8/10

The fairways I thought were in great shape considering this is a links course that traditionally has harder pan fairways. They were semi-lush to lush and had some great padding to them. Pretty green as well. Staff should be commended for keeping them in this great of shape with the way it can get hot in this area. Rated 7.5/10.

Tees were all level, beautiful and lush. Par 4 and 5 tees were in great shape and not to many divots on the par 3 tees. Rated 8/10.

Was not in any sand or waste bunkers today so I cannot rate them. They looked to be all raked and in good firm shape as usual. Of note as always and noted on the scorecard there are certain portions of the course that have blue stakes which denotes a waste bunker.

The only parts of the course that really need work are certain portions(rough) in and around some fairways and green complex's. Would rate these areas a 5/10. You shouldn't be there but you should not be in dirt or plugs of mud either.

I would highly recommend Rustic's greens, tees and fairways at this time. Such a challenging, fun and beautiful layout. Looking forward to some nice fall and winter rounds here.

I can't rate the conditions as great this time around. I have seen it in much nicer shape. The tees were great and the fairways and rough were good but the greens were much slower than usual. I think the name Rustic is so perfect for this place. There are no homes around and it feels like it is in the middle of nowhere. Personally I think they can do a better job on maintaining there fairways and bunkers. They just seem old and overlooked lately. The greens are usually excellent so I think I just played them on a down day. I will always return here and still think it is one of the better courses in Southern California.

The more I play here, the more I realize that this isn't just a nicely conditioned, fairly priced public golf course. Rustic canyon truly is the gem of the greater LA County area. A masterfully designed golf course that allows you to be creative off the tee, from the fairway, and certainly around the greens. The par 3's are terrific, large punch bowls (holes 6 & 8), that allow for multiple ways to get the ball close. Then hole 15, a three tiered green, requires spin control or you're likely to end up on the wrong tier. A great mix of wide open tee shots (1, 2, 9, 12, 13), and then a fair share challenging par 4's (7, 11, 14, 16, 18). The greens are almost always the highlight of the course, rolling firm and fast. We played Thursday & Friday July 13/14, and the course conditions were standard rustic. Not much to add to what others have said below. I strongly recommend getting out here, its a fantastic lay out and awards good shot making but the back 9 will hold you accountable.

Went out this morning at 7:30 with a good friend and played in just about 3 hours. The conditions are pretty darn good for the hot summer so far. My buddy and I were surprised that
hardly anyone was out there. They put a light sand down on the backside greens. They were on the slow side, the sand just made them a little slower. Tee boxes good, fairways good. Was in one waste bunker, but wasn't a problem. This course is always a challenge, wind or not and
with my new senior card, well worth the green fee.

Walked the Blues playing "Super Super" Twilight yesterday evening 7/13/2017 at 6:10pm on my home course with my buddy Matt finishing the front nine, then holes 10-12 and then hole 18 in 2 hrs. We paid their $15.00 walking rate and got 13 holes in--great deal---their super twilight starts at 4:30pm so it's plenty of time to finish 18 this time of year. Playing late at 6pm was beautiful--still in the low 80's weather wise at teeoff but hardly any wind and the course to ourselves.

I am so impressed with the fairways at Rustic. Rustic sits in the hot Simi/Moorpark area and the fairways were mostly all green and lush with just a few browned out spots--but that's nitpicking. For sure they have a nice summer grass with padding going on. They should be commended with the heat we have had to keep the fairways in their current shape. Rated 7.5/10.

The greens were very slow in my opinion for Rustic's standard. Mostly smooth with a couple of late afternoon/early evening poa bumps. They had some awesome challenging pins that I have never seen before--as I rarely play this late on a Thursday. Greens were holding nicely. rated 7/10.

The tees are beautiful here--just like the fairways. Mostly all level and lush 8/10

The rough is a mixed bag--some lush spots, some thin spots, etc. hard to rate--generally in decent shape.

Bunkers always raked and groomed--most bunkers play almost like firm/waste bunkers.

Recommended--great fairway and tee conditions and above average green conditions--a great walk, a great price and a nice/layout.

Played 6-14-17 for $27 walking teeing off at 5:40am and finishing at 8am. Tee boxes were in great shape level and lush. Fairways were in very nice shape, mostly lush with some minor yellowing areas providing nice lies and a good cushion to hit from. Rough around the greens was in great shape very lush and about 2 inches thick. Rough along fairways hasn't changed, still mostly thin and brown with some hard pan mixed in. Was in one greenside bunker that had a thin layer of granular sand but descent to hit from. Greens were in good shape, a little firm and rolling at medium pace which feels extremely slow here. Overall course is in real nice shape. Only negative which isn't the courses fault was the over abundance of un-repaired pitch marks on the greens.
