Walked the blues on Saturday morning. Got out at 11am as a single, paired up with a very nice twosome. POP was a bit slower than normal, finishing in around 5 hours. We had 3 groups stacked up on #6, which is something I've never seen at Rustic before.

The course is in fantastic shape right now. Tee boxes were all flat and lush. The fairways are the only minus I can really give Rustic right now. While they are starting to green up a bit, they are still VERY firm. One gentleman I was paired with (his first round at Rustic) definitely made a few comments about how hard the fairways are. They don't bother me because I'm used to them, but I could absolutely understand his comments. The greens are the best I've ever seen them. Gorgeous, lush, firm and fast...just the way Rustic greens should be. They release a lot, so factor in a few yards of roll out, especially with longer irons. The rough around the greens is lush and thick, and great to chip out of. The rough around the fairways is always a mixed bag of lush patches and hard pan. Can definitely be very penal. The couple of sand traps I was in were very playable. Not exactly fluffy sand, but well maintained and easy to blast out of. One thing that has changed over the last few months is the amount of weeds/natural grasses that have grown up in the outlying areas. Previously, if you hit your ball into a hazard/waste area, your chances of finding your ball were pretty good. Not now...your chances are highly unlikely. Customer service was very good, and we saw the beverage cart at least 5 times. As always, I highly recommend Rustic Canyon.

Played here yesterday at 8:00am. There is never a boring story to tell when you play Rustic. The winds can blow, the greens are always tough, every hole makes you think, and you have got to hit good crisp shots to score well. I can always recommend playing here due to all the factors listed above. CONDITIONS: The course is green due to all the rains. The tee boxes were level with a few divots that needed repairs. The bunkers were definitely a little hard due to the winds and rain but played okay from the bottom of them. Rustic has many waste bunkers in play and they are mostly hard pan so staying out of them is recommended. I was a little disappointed in the fairways and rough. The rough was patchy throughout and the fairways were as well. The lies in the fairways were often a mixed bag of thin grass, unrepaired divots, and some lush areas but in no way are perfect. I love this course but feel that if it is going to be consistently rated as one of the best courses to play in California, the conditions need to be stepped up a bit.

Walked the Blues (71.6-128-6628) this afternoon 3-20-2017 with my buddy Mack and his buddies Steve and Ricki in windy conditions 2nd twilight group out at 2:10pm. Kind of a weird wind day for Rustic--it was calm for a couple holes--then pick up to 15mph, then swirl, then stop and then pick up again. POP taking our time was 4 hours 40 minutes--keeping up with the group in front of us. Paid $22.00 which is their standard twilight time rate Monday through Friday.

The fairways are still thin but the more rounds I play out here they do improve slightly every time out. Getting some more rain this week so maybe that will get them even greener. Never a horrible lie in the fairways but there is a chance to be in a harder pan area or impression area between grass. Rated 6-10

The tees are beautiful, lush green and level. Rated 8-10.

The greens are in very nice shape. Holding irons nicely with spin. Putting medium to quick speed. Very little ballmarks to be seen. Rated 8-10

The rough is beautiful and lush around the green complexes and some fairway complexes and not so good in other fairway complexes depending on the hole. Greenside rough 8.5-10 Fairway rough 6-10.

Was in one greenside bunker that was firm compact sand that was raked nicely. Rated 6.5-10.

Played 3-18-17 mid morning on a very slow day walking in about 5 hours and 15 minutes waiting on every hole. Tee boxes were in great shape, lush and level. Fairways are a little thin but still provided nice lies. Rough is still a mix of lush, thin and bare along fairways and pretty good around greens. Bunkers looked to be in descent shape. Best part of the course right now are the greens, semi-firm rolling true and fast, closest I have seen them to how they used to be. Overall course is in good shape, would definitely recommend playing.

All the rains have really had a positive impact on the playing conditions and the whole environment around the course. Well worth a visit.

Out for a unusual for me morning round on 3-6-17 walking the blues(71.6-128-6634) with my buddy Matt joining a very nice 2-ball teeing off at 8:44am. We paid their standard morning rate of $43.00 to walk--POP was 4 hrs 45 minutes on a very cold and blustery weather morning turning into a beautiful day. Second straight round at Rustic where the weather has been unusually weird(last round got rained on--today's start was probably the 3rd coldest I have ever been on a golf course). We started on the back nine first at 43 degrees with about a 25-35mph gust in our face on #10, #11 and #13 that made it feel like it was in the 30's--was able to survive and have some nice downwind holes on 14,16, 17 and 18. By the time we were on 18 fairway the wind stopped and our 2nd nine--(front) was beautiful and time to take the layers of clothing off. The fairways improve with each round that I am out here. Would not call them lush by any stretch but hey they are greening up some, padding up some and would rate them a 6.5-currently. The greenside rough is probably the best that I have ever seen it. Greenside rough rated a 9-10. The fairway rough depending on the hole can either be lush, well groomed and rated a 9 also but other parts are dry, clumpy and contain problem areas. Hard to give an overall fairway rough rating with so much variance from hole to hole. The tees are in very good shape--rated a 8-10. Level except 7 tee on the blues a little unlevel. The greens are just beautiful--I made about a 45 footer on 17 with about 6 feet of break--started online and just took its course. The 2nd green was rock hard even with a wedge I could not hold that green. Otherwise they were receptive and in great shape as usual. Rated a 8.5-10. Was not in any bunkers but noticed walking by hole 3 two of the greenside bunkers on the right have marble masters beach white sand. Looks awesome. Was cool playing in the morning(for only the 3rd time ever) but if I did not have family plans later that day I would have stuck with twilight. You can't beat $22.00 walking for twilight here Monday through Thursday--enjoy.

Walked my home course from the Blues (71.6-128-6628) yesterday 2/21/2017 with my buddy Matt(Barkydog1). 1st twilight group off paying $22.00 their standard twilight rate during the week-total POP 4 hours. Very nice staff let us off a couple minutes early. Ever wanted to play golf so bad even though you knew it was going to rain?--well that's what we did. Front nine we had just enough golf grip for the first 7 holes--hole 8 was dicey and hole 9 was hilarious--felt like the Bishop in Caddyshack. After a beer at the turn and a hopeful 30 minute wait out period we were the only ones other than a walking 2some a couple holes behind us to play the back nine in a light rain. The last reviewer was spot on--looking at the rough just behind the first green's fringe it looked like the Masters. There are several areas just around the green complexes where the rough is rated a 9/10--green and lush and beautiful. Rough along many of the fairways could be rated a 9/10 in spots and a 5/10 with clumpy dirt spots in others. The fringes are in good shape but are softer than normal and won't produce the normal kick forward onto the greens. Rated 7.5/10 and in good shape. The greens are in very good shape. Been playing here since the day it opened and these are for sure softer than normal but still putt semi-quick and are in very good shape. Fixed a couple extra ballmarks. Rated 8/10 The tees are in very nice shape. Mostly all level and very nice and lush. The course is doing a great job. Rated 8/10 In this golfer's opinion the fairways here still need a lot of loving. They are dry, hardpan in areas, muddy in areas and contain multiple kind of grasses. I agree that with some more water/rain and some maintenance maybe they will perk up into great shape come spring. This is a spring/early summer type of fairway course. Look out for this course once the grass grows in--it will be off the hook nice. Rated 5/10 The layout here always has me shaking my head--Yes the fairways are 60yds wide but the fun stops right there--you need length on the par 4's on the back, terrific touch around the greens and have to be hitting your irons to the correct distances or you will be 3 putting here all day. I love the layout--thanks Gil Hanse and Rustic for another memorable round despite the rain yesterday.

Played Rustic 2 times in last two weeks and this review will cover both because my comments will apply.
The course is getting close to the best I have ever seen it. The fairways are still dormant but I truly believe this is a grass issue not a course maintenance issue. We played last on Sunday between the rainy days and the rough around the greens is really world class... as are the aprons. The greens were smooth but not fast, only guessing because they were saturated from the rain.
Soft course... really plays differently than the firm fast summer days of last couple years.
TIP: Normally, chips here are rolling out, even if you put spin on the ball. I actually got some shots to check and spin... never happens.
Go play, i have to think in 3 weeks as the grass greens in the sun this will be a must play

The course was not wet and played fantastic. The course and surrounding areas were much greener than I had ever seen them. Tee boxes, fairways, collars, and greens were in great shape. Greens ran a bit slower than they usually do at Rustic. There isn't really any rough on the course so no comment there. Fairways could be a little thin in spots, but not enough to really impact the playability.
