I'm on the West coast for the holiday week and this was our first stop two days ago. I played here back in 2010 and enjoyed the course a lot. It is a links style course in a canyon without any homes around. We walked for $66 on a Sunday morning. I wouldn't call it a great value, but it isn't a rip off either. It is a healthy walk because the first few holes play downhill, the middle group uphill, and the last few go back downhill. There are a couple elevated tees which offer some good views. The setting cannot be beat. We played the blue tees for reference. We caught it on a very windy morning which blew our golf bags all over, probably gusting to 30mph I'd guess. That made putting and chipping on some of the severly sloping greens borderline unplayable. From tee to green though the course is designed for the wind. I was able to play most shots along the ground if I wanted and had a blast trying some shots that I don't normally play. To give an idea of how friendly it is from tee to green, I played with the same ball for 18 holes in that wind. On a less windy day it would have been much more fun around the greens. The greens are actually on the smaller side, but they look large from the fairway because of large, closely cut aprons that surround them. That makes getting it pin high tricky. You can putt or chip any club you want. The conditions were better than I expected considering the water problems in CA that I read about. The course played firm which complimented the links style design. The fairways were a bit thin but I didn't have any lies that sat down too much. The greens had a nice color green and were very fast. Maybe a bit too fast if the course consistently gets a lot of wind. We walked in 4 hours 15 minutes which is pretty decent considering my limited experience with golf in Southern California. One of my quibbles is that four of the five par 5's play the same direction (uphill). I also wish the greens were a little bigger. No matter though, Rustic Canyon is a memorable choice that offers a chance to get creative!

Out again today 11/9/2015 twilight walking rate of $25.00--walked the blues in 3 hours 40 minutes on a very windy and cold November afternoon. The greens were just awesome today---this is the 2nd round in a row that I can say that they have turned a corner towards the old Rustic quicker beautiful greens. Very little ballmarks fast and firm. In some spots with spin they will hold but if you do not spin the ball much or get a gust of wind behind a lower trajectory iron your rock was releasing today. The tees were in decent shape--mostly level and lush. Was in one bunker on #11 short in front of the green that contained nice soft sand. Most of the bunkers are firmer waste bunkers. The fairways looked and played a little drier today than the last previous weeks. I think the Santa Ana winds and just wind in general here can bake these fairways out fast. The rough was thick in spots and hardpan in others depending on the spot you landed in. Of note they are doing some construction just right of the fairway on #5 all the way to the crossing waste bunker. Today was a hold on day considering the wind and pin placements. Great staff in the pro-shop and Rustic is for sure worth the twilight rate. Recommended.

Walked the blue tees today 11/2/2015 with my buddy Barkydog1 and a nice single Mark teeing off at 12:10pm finishing at 4:15pm for a POP of 4 hrs 5 minutes. Had light rain for the last two holes due to a foursome of knuckleheads we caught on #11 and waited behind them for the remainder of the round. Paid $25.00 walking which is their standard twilight rate which now starts at 12 noon. Nice staff, nice practice area that looks like they are re-sodding chipping areas. You get a great workout walking from 9 to 10 green as well as from 17 green to 18 tee and 12 green to 13 tee.

The course is in very good shape. The fairways are much greener than the last time I played here. More lush lies out there than hardpan. Teeing areas are in good shape with mostly level and lush teeing grounds with the occasional divots on the par 3's. The greens were in great shape and a lot faster than I have seen them this year. They were the highlight of the course and on some shots we saw today a glimpse of the old Rustic Canyon greens. I was very impressed with the greens. Was in one bunker almost greenside on #12 that had nicely raked firm sand. Most all of the bunkers are now blue staked denoting them as waste bunkers. The rough here is healthy in many areas around the fairways and greens. Staff is doing a great job here. Love the price, challenge and peaceful atmosphere. Recommended.

Played here on Monday 10/12. Teed off at 7:30, walking foursome finished in 4hrs 15mins . This was my first time playing here and I really enjoyed it. Greens were really quick and it took a few holes to figure out how to go at them. I enjoyed the HUGE aprons around the greens also. Tee boxes were in good shape, fairways were in very good condition and the two bunkers I was in had very good sand. This course is pretty wide open with the main challenge being to stay out of the many many waste bunkers. $43.00 to walk on a Monday was a little steep to me. I'd like to play Rustic again if I can get a deal. Nice track!

Played here yesterday. Greens were great and rolled true with few ball marks except on the par 3 fifteenth hole. Not sure what's going on but it was a mess. Everything on the course is in nice shape for this time of year however when we got to hole 10 they had just punched all the back nine tee boxes! Not sure if that means the fairway and greens are next so call before you go to be sure.

Played 10-5-15 with GDR23 teeing off around 2 pm and finishing at 5:45 pm for $25 walking. Not much has changed since I played here last week. The fairways seem to be a little bit more dried out even with the little bit of rain we got. Greens seemed to be a little softer and slower. Aprons around the greens are healing up nicely. Pro shop staff made check in real easy and got us out right on time.

Out for a very enjoyable Twilight round walking the blues this afternoon 10/5/2015 with RGM2525 paying standard TW walking rate of $25.00. POP was 3 hours 45 minutes and it always a pleasure to play with Ron. We played the front in an hour and a half and then caught a slower foursome on the back nine. The fairways today were a little more dried out than last week but still contained decent lies with most spots having just enough padding. The tees were semi-lush and in good shape with some minimal damage on the 3 pars. The sand was compact and it looks to me like almost every sand area on the course is now being defined as waste bunkers with blue stakes. The greens were very soft and healthy looking--they annoyed me today as I had a very good ball striking day off the tee but 3 putted 3 times from the fringe. You really have to rip putts here currently to get them to the hole. I understand the courses thinking in keeping them slow and soft--its supposed to be 98 degrees this weekend. Staff very friendly this afternoon---new mats on driving range. Great day to play golf this afternoon---low 70's 5-10mph breeze out in the Canyon---beautiful back nine here--recommended at current time if you know going in the greens are soft and slow.

Played 9-30-15 early morning walking joining a threesome in 3 hours 45 minutes for $43. Tee boxes were in good shape fairly lush and mostly level. Fairways were a little thin and a little dried out but still good to hit from. Rough was in typical rustic shape good to clumpy around fairways and nice and lush around greens. Sandtraps looked to be in good shape. Greens were a little soft and rolling pretty smooth but maybe the slowest I have ever seen them here. The aprons around the greens are still healing from being punched.

Out early this morning 9/28/2015 walking the blue tees teeing off at 7:30am with my buddy Barkydog1--great morning temps throughout the round. POP taking our time was 3 hrs 50 minutes not having to wait on one shot nor ever being pushed by anyone. Paid $25.00 walking thanks to the remainder of a bday gift card. Course conditions are fairly similar to my last week's Monday round here. Fairways are coming in nice--more lush spots than dry and decent coverage. Fringes were much better this week and you can only see small evidence of punching. The greens rolled better today than last Monday. They are still soft and rolling medium speed for Rustic's quickness standards and are very healthy looking and in great shape. The tees are in good shape--fairly level with only some divot damage on the 3 pars. Was not in any bunkers but visually they all looked raked and semi-firm. One interesting note/question was my buddy was in the greenside bunker in front of 7 which had blue stakes denoting waste bunker status--however there were rakes close by almost always denoting a sand bunker--anyway he played it like a sand bunker--forgot to go into the shop after the round to ask/clarify. Speaking of the pro-shop great service they got us out right away--very friendly. Love my home course--great twilight rates and it looks like they are maintaining the course nicely despite its geographically hot location.
