Out on my home course this afternoon 5/18/2015 with Pedro and his buddies. His buddy Carlos got a nice initiation of Rustic with some challenging wind today and some pretty challenging pins on the front nine. We teed off at 2pm and finished at 6:30pm for a 4 hour 30 minute walking round. Rustic is a hike from 9 green to 10 tee-- 12 green to 13 tee--- and 17 green to 18 tee--its a great walking workout. Paid their standard twilight fee of $25.00 which is a great rate for this course. Staff inside shop very friendly today with a log jam of golfers going out just before and after twilight.

Greens 8.5/10--Highlight of the course. They are firm and in GREAT shape. Almost rated them a 9. They contained little to no ball marks. They were super quick above the hole. Yes they have transitioned to mostly poa surfaces but are still in great shape and quick.

Fairways 7/10--Driving in the course looked dry but when you are out on the course you find that while there and many brown spots there is more padding than you would think. Course just needs a tad more H20 like most courses do.

Tees 8/10--They are lush and in very good shape. Mostly all level--some par 3 holes have some sand filled divots.

Bunkers 7/10--Mixed bag I was pin high on number 3 in the right hand greenside bunker and it contained beautiful beach sand. That was the only bunker I was in. My buddy Pedro was in the front greenside right hand bunker on number 17 that sounded like concrete.

Rough 7/10---Also a mixed bag depending on where you are. There are certain greenside complexes where the rough is super thick...I dropped some balls before we teed off by the putting green left of 18 green for some short chipping practice and lets just say its THICK there.

I love my afternoon rounds out here---recommended...if they put some more water on the fairways this place will be off the hook nice as the tees and greens are in very good shape at present time.

Played Saturday morning, 5-2-15. I've been curious about Rustic and finally got around to playing it. As a single, I was paired up with two fine gentlemen who were very experienced with the course. I didn't realize how large the greens were, and some of the greens were very hard to read. Green speed was fast (compared to city of LA muni's) but not overly slick, and I enjoyed the options available on most approach shots on this links style course. I wasn't in any bunkers but they looked OK, and the fairways were generally lush enough so you're not left with difficult approach shots even after good tee shots. POP was excellent, as we never waited on any shots, and we finished in a leisurely 4:15. I walked/carried, and it was a do-able hike (although I did get one quick ride on the back of a cart up one of the steep hills on the back 9). Would definitely play again.

Played Monday 4/27. The morning weather was beautiful, but not so good for golf. Partly cloudy, started in the 60's, ended in the 80's but with a consistent 15-25 mph wind. Walked the blues (6624/71.6/128) in 4h on their $43 a.m. rate with RGM2525, Robstretch and Itslikeimsayin. Rustic is a challenging course to walk as there are numerous tees that are a hike from the last green. The tees were in very good shape, lush with few divots. They were already filling in the weekend divots on the par 3's. The fairways are more thin than lush, which produces alot of roll, but good coverage. The rough has good coverage overall. Mowed down around the fairways with some occasional hardpan, lush and deep around numerous greens. The traps were well maintained, all the greenside traps had been recently raked. The waste bunkers are now maintained much better than they used to be here, regularly raked instead of natural. The big, undulating poa annua greens putted well, medium fast & firm. The aprons here are always mowed close and well maintained. The customer service was excellent, they had us on the 1st tee within 20 minutes of arriving. There are numerous water stations on the course and we saw the drink cart once on the front. We had lunch after the round in the snack shop, the food was good and the price was about what you would expect at a golf course grill. @ $43 to walk early during the week, it's much more questionable, but their $25 twilight walking rate during the week is a great value.

Played 2-27-15 with Itslikeimsayin, Robstretch and Nickesquire early morning walking in a little under 4 hours. Tee boxes were in great shape, lush and level. Fairways were in nice shape, a little firm so a lot of roll out. Rough around the greens, lush and thick, fairway rough not as long with some bare spots. Sandtraps in good shape with firm packed sand. Greens were in good shape and rolling medium/fast.

First off the tee a few minutes prior to 6:30 yesterday morning with rgm2525, Nickesquire and RobStretch. This was my first time playing Rustic and I loved it. Definitely got it a genuine linksland experience with howling winds. The wind was so fierce that it had blown the pins out of the holes on 13 & 14. It was a really beautiful day, too, great for picture taking once the sun rose above the surrounding hills.

I found the course to be in great shape. Fairways are firm with good coverage. Rough was a little more suspect in spots. Tee boxes fine and sand was good. The greens were smooth and insanely fast when putting downhill, downgrain or downwind. On at least two occasions I had a longer second putt than my first after missing a downhill putt.

Played this morning in a pace of 4 hours. Course is in very nice shape. Tee boxes were level and clean. Fairways provided good roll. Was able to avoid the bunkers, but they looked to be clean and playable. Greens were in great shape, they had great speed regardless of putting/chipping. Ran into some wind as we made the turn, but it made playing 12, 14 -18 very enjoyable. Good customer service from all the staff. Always enjoy playing here.

On Monday I played Rustic Canyon GC with 3 friends. The cart rate is $58 on weekdays, a bit high, but I really like this course so I think it is worth it.

Staff are friendly and they have a cart attendant that will get you setup with your ride. This is a links style course surrounded by desert like areas of dirt and light brush.

All the tee boxes were in great shape. Most all of the holes have decent sized landing areas unlike some courses with desert surrounding are quite narrow, plenty of grass here.

The course was fairly empty, so we zoomed around quickly in just over 4 hours. The greens here were in great shape, quick but not so fast the ball rolls off the green. The green are quite large and undulating, so hopefully your first putt is not too far away. The greens share the exact same type of grass as the collar of the green, so they can effectively alter the shape of the green from week to week. Sometimes it is hard to see if your ball is even on the green or in the collar or fairway area. Look for the little white painted dots on the collar to see the outline of the green.

Nice views in the canyon wash area where the course is built always one of my local favorite courses. Get a large drink a the turn for a free refill.

The afternoon weather was good for golf, overcast, high 60's and fairly calm conditions. Walked the blues (6624/71.6/128) in 4h, 10m on their $25 twilight rate with RGM2525. A couple of seniors joined us on the back. Challenging course to walk as there are numerous tees that are a hike from the last green. The tees were in very good shape, lush with few divots. The fairways had good coverage but were still a little thin, which produced some long drives. The rough was in good shape by Rustic standards, good coverage and mowed down around the fairways, lush and deep around numerous greens. The traps were well maintained, all the greenside traps had been recently raked. The waste bunkers are maintained much better than they used to be here. The big, undulating greens are now almost totally poa annua. They were firm and putted medium quick, downhill putts could be treacherous. The aprons here are always mowed close and well maintained. They putt better than the greens on some courses I have played. The customer service was excellent, they had us on the 1st tee within 20 minutes of arriving. There are numerous water stations on the course and we saw the drink cart once on the front. Rustic is an excellent value to play twilight during the week.

I was headed up to Sandpiper for the SCGA Team Play finals (LACC won for Thurs, Industry Hills won Sat) and decided to walk on at Rustic, a course I've longed to experience. The last two reviews hit the nail on the head as far as course conditions: greens are firm and very quick, and I never had a bad lie on the semi-dry but full fairways. So, for this review, I'll give y'all my take on the layout of which some course knowledge is essential to play here. Since the fairways are pretty much wide open and firm, getting off the tee is not the challenge at Rustic ... my usual 250 drives were going 275 or more and I stayed in most all of the fairways ... it's main defense are the greens and the areas surrounding them. I was playing well (7 hcp), both off the tee and with my irons, and thought so many of my approach shots were going to be close and as I walked up to the green I found my ball was usually long and above the hole with a nearly impossible downhill putt, or it caught one of hundreds of undulations that sent my ball off into the surrounding closely mown collection areas below every (elevated) green ... at least it seemed like this happened more often than not. Some pins were in areas that were flat but that area was about 10 square feet, so you consistently had putts 2-3 feet above you, often with 5-10 feet of break. I'm not complaining, I love that type of challenge, I'm just letting you know what it's like putting here. It's a course where you have to know where NOT to miss. That said, I'm really looking forward to playing here again. I also have a lot of respect for anyone who can score at Rustic because they must have a great short game ... and play the course a lot! I paid a rack rate of $66 to walk on a Sunday (only waited 30 min after putting my name on the waiting list). They hooked me up with some regulars who traveled quite a ways to play here, so that tells you how respected this course is. Recommended, but first timers be ready for a 40 putt round (I didn't count mine but 40 seems about right).
