Good evening fella golfers!! Yesterday, Monday Sept. 27th I had the opportunity to play Rustic Canyon Golf Course with my buddy Gary R and two other players. Our tee time was at 11:30am and thanks to Rustic awesome customer service we went a few minutes early. The golf course was pack and every green around us had players playing golf. Not sure if was because of the great Ryders cup.

The only thing that I can say that yesterday's weather was just perfect golf weather not hot and there was not win, it was just perfect. But let me tell you about Rustic, golf course. If you have not played there lately you have to come out and give a shot. I have not played rustic in a while and I was for a surprised, the golf course in my opinion is in great shape.

Starting from the fairways, very green and very clean. I was surprised to see that they had not to many debits and players are finally take care of the debits. The greens best shape that I have seen them, even though the ball was not rolling as it does on Rustic Canyon. I had one of my best rounds of golf there. Tees are very well taken care of and again not to many debits and every tee that I played (Players White) where in great shape and very level. I had a great time.

Over all I rate Rustic an 8. Very happy with the greens-keeper job!!!

Walked the blues with Pedro at 11:30am joining a nice 2 ball uncle/nephew tandem Larry and Dustin. Pop post Ryder cup was 5 hours. Weather was chamber of commerce hardly any wind, partly cloudy skies with Temps in the mid to low 70s. I have been playing my home course since the first week it opened 20 years ago and I have never seen the tees, fairways and greensude rough this green and lush ever this late in the year. They are doing a great job maintenance wise. Its so lush right now it's gone from a links course to a lush bomb it and stop it close course. Greens were a tad quicker than my last round out here. The greens are holding like darts and are putting slow to medium pace for Rustics standards but overall are very healthy with a pure roll and in great shape. Rated 7/10 Fairways super lush. Great lies and the course is playing longer if you are a high ball carry player with your driver. I had a couple drives today that were crushed and got a yard or so of roll. I love hitting irons off these fairways. Rated 8/10 Tees mostly all level and lush and in beautiful shape. Rated 8/10 Greenside rough is in the 9.5/10 category. Fairway rough improving. Spots of lush grass, still some thin spots here and there. Rated 6.5/10. Was in greenside bunker left of 11 with a nice base of sand. Would highly recommend getting out here now for a round . Epic course.

Walked the whites today (9/22) at Rustic as a threesome, teeing off at 9:40am. We finished in exactly 4 hours, with little to no waiting on the group ahead. The pace of play was excellent. It was a warm day in the low 90's by afternoon. But there was often a nice breeze to keep things a little cooler. Overall, Rustic is in Very Good condition!

The tee boxes are lush. The fairways are lush, with only a spattering of thin or bare areas. I always had a great lie in the fairway - nice cushion under your ball. The fairways were a bit softer than is typical for Rustic. Consequently, there was less run out on the fairways than usual. The rough nearest the fairways is 1-3 inches in length and appropriately penal, not too bad. I was in one greenside bunker. It had plenty of firm sand, and was easy to hit from. The greens have still not fully recovered from being punched a few weeks ago. They were definitely slower than typical Rustic conditions. We all had numerous putts that were left short due to the slower green speeds. They were also just a little bumpy from time to time. But this was the exception. The primary challenge with the greens is getting used to the slowish speed. On the positive side, the greens were much more accepting of approach shots, enabling you to get closer to the hole, instead of these shots running well past the hole. That was a plus. I thoroughly enjoyed my round today. The course is in great shape and will only get better with each passing day.

Played 9-13-21 early morning as a single for $42 walking the course in about 3 hours. Tee boxes were mostly in good shape with a few having some minor bare spots. Fairways were very green and lush, with nice lies but a little long so not much roll out. Rough along fairways is pretty much non existent, however rough around the greens is in really good shape, about 2-3 inches and thick. Was in one greenside bunker that was in decent shape, but hadn't been groomed in awhile. Aprons around the greens have been punched recently, they are playing very soft and bumpy right now, but with a little more time to heal they should be in good shape. Greens have almost healed from being punched, they are soft and a little shaggy, so they a rolling pretty slow with some minor bumps.

Played here Sunday, 9/5 with a 2:10 tee time booked directly on their site. Saw it a few weeks ahead of time for only $36. Turned out to be too hot to walk, so I paid $25 more upon arrival for a nice cart with GPS and cooler. Paired with a threesome of nice guys who also rode. (Pro shop guy said it would be less for a split cart, but my cart partner would have to be comfortable sharing the cart with a stranger. Didn’t want that conversation, so I just paid the single rider rate.) Started a few minutes early with a nice buffer from the group in front of us. We also seemed to have a nice gap behind us until around hole 15/16 when several groups behind were catching up. One guy in my group was extremely deliberate, reading every putt from both sides of the hole, standing over shots for a long time, etc. (Amusingly, after he’d read every putt for a couple minutes, he left about 90% of them well short of the hole, so it was all for naught anyway.) Total POP almost exactly 5 hours. The screen in the cart kept displaying a message saying all carts had to be in by 7:30 and that the course closed at that time. Gorgeous but hot day with a decent breeze on the front nine but virtually no wind later in the round.

Conditions are quite good! Greens are smooth, medium speed and pretty soft, accepting full shots well. Unfortunately the large aprons are also pretty soft, making it difficult to play low running chips like the design calls for (I’m looking at you, 12.) Fairways have good coverage and provided good lies. As usual here, fairway adjacent rough is almost non-existent and/or thin but up around the greens the rough is very lush and nice. Then there are some very deep areas you definitely want to avoid (short right of 15, for instance). We played the Hanse (combo) tees so we got a taste of blue, white and black. Most were good, while a couple seemed a bit lumpy. I was only in one bunker (left of the green at 11) and it was good, although there was a big rock in it near my ball I needed to move.

Driving out of the course at dusk, some sort of wild animal ran in front of my car and I really wish I’d gotten a better look at what it was. It was over near the 3rd green and then bolted across the road and up the hill. It was very low to the ground but decent size. Definitely not a coyote. Maybe a bobcat or a large skunk or something like that. It climbed the hill on the opposite side of the road in no time. Really bummed I couldn’t identify it. Cool nonetheless.

P.S. Good service alert: After hitting my driver on the par-4 3rd, I noticed the head was loose. Called the shop to see if they had a tool (couldn’t find mine) and not only did they have one they let me use, but the guy said they had several extra and told me I could keep it! Thank you!

Played the Hanse combo tees Monday Aug 9. Course in fine shape overall, but beginning to show some effects from dry spring and summer, quite a few bare spots around the edges and creeping into the fairways. I also played poorly, so saw more of those edges than usual! Greens are in great condition but running pretty slow. Because of the way the course is laid out and the number of walkers, a fast round here is 4:15 with 4.5 more normal and 4:45 not unusual—but this Monday it was 5+ and slow from the get go at 11:30. Hard to say what the issue was other than lots of play. I applaud walkers and love that myself, and this course is quite walkable except for the very long distances from green to tee on a third of the holes. This really does tend to slow play except for the regulars who know how to stay ahead. That and a range in fairly poor condition prevent Rustic from my top tier, but it is an excellent value and a very unique course without being quirky. Recommended but plan for a long day regardless of your game. And this is not a beginner or high handicapper friendly course.

Walked the blues this morning 8/9/21 with buddies Matt and Pedro joined by a very nice single Lonny. Weather was beautiful in the morning teeing off at 850am warming up on the back nine. Pop 4 hrs 30 minutes. You get a great workout walking this track. Long course and long walks from tee to green. Fairways are in excellent condition. Lush lies, great padding. This time of year the fairways here are top notch. Rated 8/10 Green side rough lush and in great shape 8.5/10..bordering a 9. Was not in any bunkers. Greens have no ballmarks, super healthy and holding irons nicely. They are putting very slow. The maintenance crew was watering every green just as our group was arriving on the back. Rated 7.5/10. Highly recommended Tees lush and in great shape. All level. Rated 8/10

Walked the Blues this morning 7/26/2021 joining a friendly 3 ball at 8am under Maui like humid weather conditions. Cloud cover, some sprinkles and no wind. Comfortable temp though as the cloud cover hid most of the sun. Super nice pro-shop staff. POP was 4 hrs 15 minutes as a slower group let us play through on hole 10. We had played 9 holes in 2 hours with a beginning golfer in our group and the group behind us called the pro-shop complaining of slow play while we waited on the group in front of us. Anyway. I had not played my home course in a couple months. She is in great shape as far as the fairways, tees and aprons are concerned. The rough has also become more lush and has improved in quality. I am not sure why the last two reviews were so downright negative but they did have some truth in regards to the greens..more on that below. Fairways very lush, almost full grass coverage in most areas. Nice lies and with the grass being thicker in the fairways the course has some more length and less roll. I loved the fairways and am rating them right now close to a 7.5 or 8/10. Tees very nice, lush ,mostly all level. I tend to play right where the stones are placed and most every part of the teeing grounds were great. Rated 8/10. The rough just lining the fairways was in better shape than I have seen it in winter months. Semi lush mowed down nicely. Greenside rough just around the green complexes are still beautiful and lush and in good shape. Fairway rough 6/10. Greenside rough 8.5/10 Aprons are soft landing and putt slower but fairly smooth. The greens are very soft at this time. Looks like they recently maybe 2 weeks ago did a small tine on them. If you are used to very quick Rustic greens you have to adjust to hitting the ball a little harder right out of the gate. However I did not see any maintenance issues with the greens. Most putts rolled smoothly and most ball marks were fixed. Just looks like they are growing the grass out more and keeping them watered due to the upcoming hot August and September months. Rated 7/10 I was in greenside bunker left of 12 on my drive and it was hard packed and raked and in good shape. I did see several of the greenside bunkers look firmer when I walked by each of them. Would highly recommend Rustic right now due to the nice conditions in the rough, fairways and tees. I am sure as the summer months pass us they will roll and cut the greens to make them firmer.

I want to start this review by saying Rustic Canyon has been my favorite golf course in the LA area for years but the last 6+ months have been disappointing to say the least. I have never written a review on this site before, but I hope this message can be heard.

The staff and service is always incredible, the facilities are great. But it simply seems the course has given up on keeping it at tournament conditions. This course is known for being a top 20 golf course in California and for being the premier links track in the area. But currently this course does not live up to those standards or playing conditions.

Pros:
- Amazing Property
- Great service
- Food is great

Cons:
- Greens are the slowest in the LA/Ventura county
- fairways are excessively long and slow
- aprons are too soft to play links golf

I hope this is a seasonal issue that the course can get under control because this should be the premier public course with 100miles of LA.

I would recommend staying away until they get the maintenance back in order and the course playing like it should. Currently it is hard to justify playing Rustic over Moorpark CC, Simi Hills, Olivias Links or any other Ventura County course.
