Played Rustic for the second time ever today (Friday 6/3). It was a lot of fun, as was the case the first time I played it, which I think was around a year ago. Course is in great shape. Greens were slow if putting uphill, obviously faster if putting downhill, and medium everywhere else. Lots of undulations in these greens, with many also being protected by runoffs on any given side, making accurate ball placement important on approaches, pitches and chips. The other interesting thing about these greens is that most of the time, it’s difficult to tell where the fringe ends, and the green begins. There is a lot of similarity from fairway to fringe to green, which I would say is typical of a links course, which this could certainly be described as.

Fairways are in great shape, as well, as is the rough, for the most part (which is about as mild and non-penal as you will find). There *are* bare spots along the edges of the rough, but it’s hard to tell if those are by design, as there are several waste areas and other rugged features around this course (again, fitting for a links style). Speaking of which, I was only in one bunker, and it was of the somewhat rugged variety – small, along the edge of a green next to a natural habitat hazard area, with soft, granular sand, and no bunker rake in sight. In fact, I’m not sure I saw a single bunker rake on the entire course. I guess you don’t need them, with the kind of sand they use.

As mentioned above, this is a links style layout, which means it is very flat, with lots of natural habitat everywhere, and lots of shots that you can’t quite see where you’re supposed to hit it, which makes prior experience and course knowledge/familiarity a great advantage. The course doesn’t have much in the way of typical defenses, as the fairways are wide, the greens are big, and the bunkers don’t come into play as much as at other courses. As a result, the challenge comes from the undulation of the greens, the wind, and the semi-blind shots throughout.

The front nine is a semi-unique collection of holes, as it has three par 5s AND three par 3s. This makes for a nontraditional par 36. The back nine is more traditional, with only two of each, and five par 4s. Some of the par 4s on both nines are quite long, specifically, well over 400 yards (from the blue tees). But, you can get some good roll on these fairways, and some of the holes have an elevated tee, so they don’t necessarily play as long as the scorecard indicates. All in all, a fun track with great conditions that I look forward to playing again in the future.

Walked my home course this morning 5/31/22 from the blues with my buddy Matt joining a twosome on 3 tee. Total Pop was 4 hrs 45min on a packed course with temps in the high 70s and anywhere from a 10-15mph breeze. Pro shop staff always friendly.

Rustic is in great shape right now!!

Fairways are lush and padded with great lies. Rated 8/10

Greens are semi quick, holding nicely and would say putting close to a 10.5 on the Stimp. I have seen them quicker. Rated 8/10.

Tees are in great shape lush, level and they have added new wood tee markers since my last round which are cool. Rated 8.5/10

Rough bordering the fairways has more coverage than usual albeit some of it still brown, wispy and thin in spots. The greenside rough is always the highlight of tbe show at Rustic in the 9/10 range. Fairway rough 6.5/10 range.

Was not in any bunkers today.

Highly recommend this course. Golf top 100 courses to play. Great layout, great conditions, choose your wind days here selectively.

Played 4-28-22 early morning walking as a single for $49 and finishing in a little under 3 hours. Tee boxes were in good condition, nice coverage, level and cut tight. Fairways were in nice shape , semi-lush and a little soft with nice lies but not much roll out. Rough along fairways was not much longer than fairways and in decent condition. Rough around greens is 2-3 inches and very lush. Was in one greenside bunker that was in okay shape with a decent layer of firm sand. Greens were playing a little soft and slower than normal, but still rolling pretty smooth.

Walked the blues this morning 4/4/2022 at 1150am with my buddy Matt joined by a nice twosome Allen and Paul. Pop was around 4 hrs 55 minutes under perfect weather conditions(had a chance to shoot my low at Rustic but 3 putted both 17 and 18 from the fringe for bogeys). Met by friendly staff in the proshop and we were off.

Rustic is in good shape which I would echo on Mark's review.

Greens were medium pace holding shots with spin or with higher trajectory . No ballmarks to fix. Putting pure like butter. 10 green seemed to be quicker than the other greens. Rated 8/10 bordering an 8.5

Fairways had decent to nice coverage with some more green spring grass popping up. Rated 7/10

Greenside rough beautiful emerald green and lush in spots Rated 9/10

Tees level and lush and in good shape. Rated 7/10

Was not in any bunkers but most looked firmer and raked.

Fairway rough mowed down tighter and in decent shape. Rated 6.5/10

Played here Saturday, 3/26 with a 2:10 tee time. Checked in around 1:20 and added a push cart and told the guy I was ready to go anytime if there was any chance of moving me up. He said he could move me to 2:00, and then they called us to the tee a little early, so I ended up teeing off about 15 minutes before I was originally scheduled. The other 3 in my group rode while I walked. Pace was good for a Rustic weekend afternoon, finishing in about 4 hours, 45 minutes. The sun dipped behind the mountains just as we were finishing on 18, so there was probably another 30 minutes of playable light left. Gorgeous day with ideal weather.

Conditions are quite good. Greens are smooth, medium to medium-fast speed and accept full shots well. Fairways are a little inconsistent but most of them are quite good. The rough along the fairways seems a little thicker/more substantial than normal and the rough around the greens is the usual lush, beautiful green rye. Blue tee boxes were good. The couple bunkers I was in were also good.

Scored terribly but still enjoyed every minute of it. Highly recommended.

It was great to get back out to my home course after a couple of months not playing here.

The greens were very firm and putting in beautiful shape. Accepting irons with height and spin. Rated 8/10

Tees beautiful lush and level. Rated 8/10

Greeside rough gorgeous lush and green. Great shape 8.5/10

Fairways firm and padded with tons of roll. Links winter style the way the course intended. Rated 6.5/10

Taking advantage of being so far North from home, dropped by Rustic Canyon, which is also one of my favorites. Totally agree with Ron's recent review, Course is in very nice condition, and plays the way Rustic was meant to be played. The dormant fairways provide nice roll ot which was appreciated. Greens rolled well with decent speed. I can't comment about how receptive they were, because I really never hit a shot well enough to determine.

When I play poorly, which is too often the case now, and still walk off the course and can say you had a good time, that is a testament to the golf course. I just wish this course wasn't so darn far from home

I really like the why the fairways are playing right now, just the way a links course should be. They are mostly dormant with a good amount of roll out, the lies a semi tight but have good cushioning. Rough is nice and lush around the greens and about 2 inches long. Rough along fairways is cut short with a few bare spots. Was not in any bunkers but they looked well groomed. Greens were in nice condition, rolling true at medium pace and playing semi-firm. Overall course in really good shape.

Played the blue tees in mild temps and shifty winds, with bnaso for my 3rd match of cup 18. This was my pilgrimage to Rustic, as it has been on my 'gotta play' list. I've never played a course with as many holes as Rustic, meant to quickly levy unexpected results & lies...to typical shots. Do your homework, eat your Wheaties, and having a seasoned Rustic golf buddy with you, is a good combination to golf well here. I quickly noticed that many out here walk the course with their pull carts...I brought mine just in case, and was glad I decided to use it. The range is off mats and there is a decent chip/pitch/sand/flop green next to it. The practice putting green as connected to, yet a small distance from the 18th green...just quickly get over it and on with your business. Customer service is good and the facilities are nice.
Tees were in good shape.
Fairways are cut tight, healthy to compress shots from, and can run. I'm talking about run on the down slope holes...you will believe it when you see it.
Rough is there, usually cut just as tight as fairwarys and don't offer much help to errant shots. Play smart.
Bunkers are great, good sand and density. The #17 right greenside bunker is being redone and will have more plush sand the closer to the green you are(ask me how I know).
The greens are tricky...firm, fast, tiers, undulations, and decieving slopes. They are healthy and can accept shots, but only well placed high spinning shots, otherwise, they release and run. A lot of well placed shots need to land on the softer fringe before the green, to be effective here. The fringes are wide, some more than 10 yards wide surrounding the greens(don't be fooled by this from long distances). They roll pretty quick but are consistent on breaks and finish.
I thououghly enjoyed playing with bnaso and having a competitive match at this layout(its no pushover). This course will make you play smarter, as you need to respect the design, conditions and shot behaviors to do well. I will return...recommended.
