What a great time teeing it with fellow GK Review Gurus on one of my favorite courses. You’ve probably heard this from me before, but the stretch of hole #10 - #14 is my favorite 5 hole stretch anywhere. There are some spectacular golf holes at Sandpiper you will never forget. I’m also a big fan of hole’s 5, 6, 16 and even 18 (don’t mind it being a par 3).

Over many years, Sandpiper, like so many golf courses in Santa Barbara County, was impacted by the severe drought. It was simply impossible for the golf course to combat it with its own irrigation. Well, amen to our wet winter/spring because Sandpiper is back to former lush green self. Take a look at the photos I posted above. How long the golf course will remain this green, I don’t know, but you can bet it’s going to be in great shape for some time.

As far as the conditions, loved them. Greens were running smooth, moderately quick (I’ve seen them much faster) and mostly firm. Fairways, lush, cut tight, ball sat up well. Rough, mostly lush, cut low, some dry areas but always grass to hit off. Tee boxes, lush, cut tight, well groomed. Bunkers, I found 3 greenside bunkers, all seemingly a little different in texture/weight, but all a heavier type material. Likely to handle off-shore winds from the ocean which we got a good dose of on Monday. Overall, the bunkers were in very good shape.

Service was very professional and friendly throughout the day. I like the golf carts as they ran well and had a USB charger. The carts did not have GPS and the course is not marked very well so I guess if I have to one suggestion to Sandpiper to improve, I would consider more on course yardage markers if they are not going to have GPS.

My personal highlight of the day was hole #11, we decided to play the tips, mistake for me, should have been on the Gold Tees as the tips measure 7200 yards, anyway the hole was playing like 248 into the wind. I hit driver to a small target and missed the green left. I proceeded to get up and down for par, felt like a tough birdie!

Joined Other Guru's today and made the trek from Orange County to Santa Barbara. I had never played Sandpiper and after years of wanting I finally pulled the trigger. I was expecting a few spectacular holes and a bunch of repetitive style holes for some reason. Boy was I wrong. I cant think of two holes that are alike. Every hole had its own little charm and teeth to destroy your score. We played from the Tips which run about 7200+ yards and with the 20-30 mph winds felt like 8000 yards. I had a few decent drives and was still 200+ out on par 4's and 280+ out on par 5's. The par 3's here will eat you alive. The 4th hole was a 258 yard (YES 258!) par 3. Oh and add a 10 mph cross wind. I dont think I have ever used driver on a par 3 or at least since I was 10 years old. It doesn't get much easier after that too. hole 11 was 220 yards down hill which would have played about 190 but there was a 20mph wind in your face. It played about 235 yards. The total combined distance of the 4 par 3s was 860+ yards. The course was in fantastic shape from tee- green. The tee boxes were level and had very few divots. The markers were wide so you could place the ball a little better for your shot shaping skills. The fairways were the highlight of the day. Cut short and gave very nice roll. They also provided you with the most amazingly fluffy lies. There were few divots here and there and they were all filled. The greens were a little tricky to learn. The starter let us know there is not tricks to the greens like everything breaks to the ocean. What you see is what you get. One other tip was every green sloped back to front. They had a few greens that looked like they got a small needle punch but they did not affect the putts. Greens were firm and fast which made it hard to control pitches and flops. Bump and run was the best tactic. The rough and Sand were not much to right home about. The rough was but to about an inch and had a good 10+ ft before getting into the nasty brush that was about a foot deep. I was in one trap and it was on the 18th hole which is par three and it had a small puddle in it. The sand was soft, even though it was wet, and easy to get out of. In all I cant wait to play here again some time soon. All I wish is a little less wind and all will be alright.

Played one of my favorite courses Sandpiper for the 3rd time ever this morning 5/15/2017 at 11am in the first GK Guru group out joined by JohnnyGK, Pedro7170 and Jerry64--fun group of guys and we had a great round and time out there despite very blustery conditions--how can you not in Santa Barbara at Piper. The weather was unusual for Santa Barbara as we had a pretty steady 25mph+ at times wind that strengthened as the round went on. Our POP letting a 2 some play through on 9 was 4 hrs 30 minutes. I rode the Black Tees(7159/75.1/136). The course is just flat out a must play. I am biased in saying that--its one of my favorite layouts with very quick greens which I enjoy putting on, length, a fun and challenging layout and always great conditions. The staff I met today were very courteous, cool and had a nice pleasant caring attitude. I always am treated well here. They have a very sloped and quick putting green which is just a tad quicker than the regular greens here. The driving range is huge with Taylormade balls. The restaurant has a great ocean view overlooking most of the course and facility. The greens were once again the highlight of the course. Running quick, true and holding irons and chips with spin which is the perfect combo. If I had to stimp it today they were close to a 11 on the stimp. Downhillers even quicker than that. The staff and cart barn guys do a great job of letting players know that the green complexes are designed from back to front and to stay below the pin locations. Greens rated an 8.5/10. The fairways were green, lush and provided a nice cushion for lies. Very nice shape for early summer/late spring. Rated 8/10. The tees were level, lush and in good shape. Rated 8/10. The rough bordering the fairways was in very good shape. Couple inches thick at least and very green and healthy. Rated 8.5/10. The bunkers that I were in(greenside #1 and greenside #3) looked to be damp and crusty on the surface but as you splashed your shot out no problem with enough sand underneath the top surface. Rated 7.5/10. You get some awesome ocean views on #5,#6, #10, #11, #12, #13, #14 and in the background on most of the back nine holes. I have not played Pebble but I can see why they call this the mini Pebble Beach. Holes #2, #4, #11 and #17 from the tips will test the best of players. If I had more money and lived in SB or close to it I would be playing this course at least once a week. Highly recommended!
