We played today with a tee time around noon. With today being real hot (around upper 80s), it wasn't that busy. It took us about 4 1/2 hours to play 18 holes. This was our first time playing here. Sterling Hills is a very challenging course with four sets of tees. There are a lot of carries on the course and the course is not flat. Water comes into play on 4 or 5 holes. This course has a country club feel to it.

The greens were punched last week. Greens today still seems a little too sandy for us to putt on. When we were putting, it just seems that the balls do not roll as much plus the balls on the greens would bounce around too much. In addition, the punched holes on the greens were quite large. I would say give another two or three weeks before it gets back to normal.

The fairways were quite lush but there were thin and muddy spots here and there. The bunkers were a little on the hard pack side. Tee boxes were decent with a lot of divots here and there. It was nice that the carts has gps in them. There is a driving range here but it is quite small (maybe 10 or 12 stalls). Overall the course is in great shape for this time of year with the exception of the punched greens.

All of the greens at Sterling Hills have just been punched less than a week ago so they are nowhere near as nice as they normally are but considering how recent the aerification was they don't look that bad. At least most of the sand is gone because of the couple windy and rainy days we've had in Camarillo.
The fairways were struggling a few months ago but they have really shown some significant improvement over the last couple months. It doesn't take much rain water to completely turn golf courses around in Southern California. The fairways at Sterling Hills had way too many "holes" and thin areas before the rain started coming down. Now most of the old thin areas and holes have filled in and greened up. Also I heard the staff talking about how the marshals put in many hours working on the bad areas in the fairways and on the tee boxes whenever they have the opportunity.
The part of the golf course that probably needs the most attention is a couple tee boxes that are simply torn to shreds and extremely bumpy and not leveled out. Overall Sterling Hills Golf Club looks great right now and will only get better as time goes on with all of the effort the staff is putting forth to improve the golf course. I would give the greens another week or two before counting on them to roll smooth like they usually do. I would definitely recommend Sterling Hills to players of all ability levels for a challenging round as well as nice weather and scenery. The golf course has four sets of tees and they all make for very different looks at the layout.

Played Sterling on 9/23 . Tee time 10:06 $30 (walking)... Paired with one other player (who was using a cart) from the white tees. Course was in good shape..there were some areas that had "ground under repair" but not enough to distract from my play...Most greens were smooth and fast (probably around 10 on stimp) compared to what I'm used to playing on. Pace of play was good.. a few times we had to wait for the foursome in front of us..but that was understandable as we were only two...they had offered for us to play through but we declined...as we were enjoying the day and the occassional slight wait was welcomed. The wind kicked up around noon which offered more fun challenges. finished in 4 hours...Discovered that seniors that are 55+ can get weekday walking rate of $32 (with a small bucket of range balls).otherwise a cart is $13 extra. Hit off from the mats on the range...but all in all...another great and fun day at one of the nicest courses (and best values) in Ventura County

Had a coupon this morning teed off 9:50am for 30 bucks. Played Blue Tees..no wind until #14...perfect scoring conditions. Agree with the previous review...some of the fairways were thin and some were dry. Probably just need a little more water to make them a little more lush. The greens were the best part of the course and stuck like darts with wedges and short irons in. They putted fairly true and I enjoyed them. The tee boxes were unlevel in some places and also needed to be watered. I was in one fairway bunker on #10 that had hard packed sand. The rough was not to penal and also needed water. Pace of play was not to bad as the starter stuck our group of a twosome in between what looked like a Men's Club. Probably will only play here again with a coupon and will call ahead to see if there are any tournaments booked for that day.

Played in a tourney here today. Sun actually came out today so the weather was nice. Impressed with the course. The two nines were quite different with the back nine being more hilly and seemingly more narrow. There were several holes where some prior experience would have been nice. The rough could be punitive and the fairways were a bit thin in parts but overall were nice. The greens rolled true and were about medium in speed. Thankfully I did not visit the bunkers so I cannot comment on the sand. The course played fairly slow - 5 hours - but I think our tournament was the problem. The marshals were active in trying to keep us moving. I would like to play the course again.

Had not played here in a while and enjoyed the experience. I was impressed with the fairways here since the last time I played the course. They were lush in most parts with only a few thin lies. The bunkers were in great shape...I was in two of them and they had nice soft sand to blast out of. The tee boxes had enough grass to tee your ball up with no peg. Some of the boxes were unlevel but you could almost always find a level spot. The rough was up around some of the fairways 1-2 inches and was hit and miss whether you could power through it. The greens were poa greens and were slow putting wise for my taste but ran quick when chipping the ball. Many pin placements were tucked in corners today which made for several challenging approach shots. The greens held approach shots decently if they were higher irons coming in. I wish they could add one more par 5 here to make it a par 72 course instead of a 71. Pace of play was just under 5 hours today as there were a ton of golfers for a Monday. The carts had GPS and were nice. Practice range had mats only and they have a nice putting green to work on your game. I love the back nine here and what it has to offer. It has so many more interesting holes. Love #16 , #17 and #18 to close. Those are great finishing holes. Staff that checked us in the pro-shop was nice. I would come back to play this course and try and hit it on a day maybe where the weather was not as nice.

It’s been a long time since I played Sterling Hills Golf Club and I forgot what a challenging and interesting layout it provides. Today, unfortunately I was called off of the course for family matters and only got to play the front nine. Fortunately longball23 completed 18 and I look forward to reading his more in depth review. Regarding the front 9, it was in excellent shape, tee to green. Lush fairways providing superb lies. 1 to 3 inch rough to contend with that was mostly lush. Very well maintained bunkers with high quality sand. Healthy greens that rolled true although a bit slow for my taste. It looked like they had them running a bit slow by design today and not out of necessity. Had the course cut them down a little more and rolled them…whoa…they would be slick. They were still very enjoyable to play and look great. The layout on the front 9 plays LONG. 6 of the 9 holes play to elevated greens and gradually uphill. I hit many long irons teeing up from the blue tees. Also, you need to be very accurate off the tee and on approach. The course does an excellent job protecting itself with strategically places bunkers, trees, OB and water hazards. The greens have many undulations and potato chip shapes so it’s possible to be on one section of a few greens and not have a putting access pin…this puts a lot of pressure on your iron game. In general, I think this is the type of course you can really fine tune your game on as well has enjoy, its got an excellent clubhouse and is clean…highly recommended.

Played back to back days this past weekend. Course was in really good shape overall. Greens were firm and rolling true. The fairways were in good shape. This course is challenging but fair. There are a couple of long par-4's which will challenge you.

Used the 2-for-1 coupon on Sunday and it was awesome. Finished the round in 3 1/2 hours. I would definitely recommend playing the course if you can get the 2-for-1 deal.

Had not played this course in several years. Played on 9/12, 7:45. Was looking forward to playing, very dissapointed. Fairways where soggy and the grass was thin. Lots of mud around the course. Found 2 bunkers, one was perfect the other had 12 to 18 inches of sand. For the price it was pretty sad. Would tell all to wait a month or so before going out.
