Monday after The Masters! Had the opportunity to play this amazing club on 4/11/22, compliments of this site & Golf Moose. The Saticoy Club is an amazing track, with among the nicest conditions you’ll find anywhere. Immaculate is not an understatement. I can see why it’s so highly rated on this site.

You wouldn’t even know it’s there, as it’s surrounded by farm country. Kinda seems out of place, in my honest opinion. Nevertheless, it’s a wonderful facility, with wonderful service.

My favorite aspects, aside from the golf course itself, were the practice facilities: Grass driving range, two putting greens (one flat and one sloped), and two large chipping greens, complete with bunkers, practice balls, and even shag bags and divot mix.

As for the layout of the course, it’s a parkland style track, with moderate elevation change throughout. The rough is enough to affect your lie and quality of contact, but not overly penal. Fairways are fairly wide, bunkers are strategically placed, both alongside them and around the greens. Grass was perfect everywhere, from the tee boxes all the way to the greens.

Greens were not very fast today, negating much of the cautioning I had received about being above the hole. But I was also warned about false fronts, and that part held true. Greens were in excellent shape, with nary a pitch mark, save for those from our own shots. Lots of undulation and sectioning, meaning it is important to know where the pin is, and put the ball in the proper spot. They had pin sheets, which were very helpful, as the flags are not color coded, nor did I notice a particular rotation.

All in all, it was indeed a privilege to play here, and I’m so glad I did. I can see why they are going to host an LPGA event later this year, as it’s every bit worthy of professional tournaments. Thanks again to Johnny and GolfMoose for putting this together. By the way, I had amazing playing partners, who were both very good players, but also just great guys (and I think they’re both GK Gurus, as well). I think they must’ve brought the best out of me, because I played quite well. Can’t wait to do it again at the GK/GM event at Wood Ranch next month, and hopefully some GK Plays events, too.

Had the privilege of teeing it up at "The Coy" Monday morning 4/11/22 with the Gk/Golfmoose outing. Joined by 2 fine gentlemen and Gkers I have never met Mark and Kyle. Both good players and very cool people. We enjoyed a good playing pace with just minimal waiting considering it was a big shotgun tournament. We had a 15mph swirling wind that would stop and go throughout the day. I helped John check players in before the round and it was nice to meet some Gkers and golfers in the area ready to take on this great course. Also got to meet Weber at check in which was cool. Saticoy CC has a elevated driving range that had players on grass this morning. They also have two separate putting greens and a beautiful members only practice area down the hill below adjacent to the 11th hole. All the staff I encountered were friendly and got to meet the GM who appreciated all the social media posts lately. This was my third time playing here. My first time was in 2009 right before the US Open qualifier and my last time a couple years ago during a Gk guru outing. Conditions are fantastic at this time. I think my overall rating should be close to a 8.75/9 range. The greens were softer and more receptive yesterday than my previous rounds here. They were putting pure and around a 10.5 on the stimp. Our group took the time to fix any ballmarks we saw which were few. The greens have a lot of undulations, false fronts and swales. Downhillers need to be stroked with precision and uphillers yesterday could be struck firm. Overall green rating 8.75 Fairways were beautiful lush great lies and padding, Green sod mix provided on the carts. Rating 9/10 Tees were level, lush and beautiful. Rated 9/10 Rough was a very healthy and lush 3 inches. Manageable with wedges or short irons but very easy to grab your club going through. Rated 9/10. Was in greenside bunker on 11 that contained just enough sand and was raked beautifully. There are numerous bunkers on this layout both Fairway and greenside to avoid at all costs. Rated 8/10. Layout is a parkland layout that has a variety of everything you would want, Holes 1 and 2 are tight with hole 2 and 17 being a big dogleg left. Than you have big dogleg rights on 12 and 16. Plenty of lateral hazards, OB, bunkers and some hidden water to keep the best of players on their toes, I can see why they have hosted numerous US open qualifiers and an upcoming LPGA event. Members are very blessed that they can sink their teeth into this layout. The oldest private CC in Ventura County. Highly recommended.

Having never played The Saticoy Club, I was really excited to experience this course. I had heard only great things about Saticoy and I must say that it was as good as represented. Big time thanks to Johnny for getting this set up.

I will not review the conditions because the prior reviews have very accurately described them. However I did expect the greens to be quicker, based upon the practice green, which typically are slower than the holes on the course. I did not find this to be true in this case. If this course was closer to my location, I would really try to get out here more often.

I found the "visuals" really wonderful at The Saticoy Club. Loved the bunkering and the green complexes. It would take a few rounds to understand the subtleties of this place. I think the biggest compliment I can pay this course is that when you play absolutely awful and still walk away loving the layout and having had a great time, that kind of says it all.

Played 4-7-22 afternoon with Mark, Mark and John getting around the course in about 5 hours. Tee boxes were in good shape, level with nice coverage and cut semi-tight. Fairways were in great shape very lush with decent roll out and great lies, just real nice to hit from. Rough was cut about 2-3 inches longer than fairways and in really good shape but not to penal. Greens were in great shape semi- soft, and rolling smooth at medium fast pace. Always a treat to play such a wonderful course.

On Thursday with GK Gurus, itslikeimsayin, rgm2525 and mark_6m we had a top tier golf experience.

When I arranged this coming’s Golf Moose / Greenskeeper.org The Saticoy Club Private Outing, I purposely wanted it to be around the Masters. The Saticoy Club has many of the same playing characteristics of Augusta. First being it’s immaculately kept. Well nothing is Augusta immaculate – LOL.

The Saticoy Club features green complexes that are kept tight and fast with many false fronts and sides that require precise iron shots to correct pin positions to get close. Once on the greens you’ll be experiencing very smooth, well holding at 11+ speeds. Lots of undulations with no putt that unfair yet all putts requiring a look. Quite frankly some of the funniest greens I’ve played.

Elevation changes, doglegs, uphill/downhill, side slopes, big well positioned mature trees, challenging fairway and greenside bunkers … An experience like no other … did I really just say that?

Take a look the photos I just posted, the conditions are immaculate across the board, service excellent, an absolute must consideration for CC membership or play any chance you get.

Brief Course History: Founded in 1921, The Saticoy Club was the first private club in Ventura County. The golf course was designed by William F. Bell and offers a spectacular, classic 18-hole Championship Golf Course. The course is quietly nestled in the hillsides of Somis, California. The club has hosted many U.S.G.A. Championship Qualifiers and SCGA Amateur Championships. Playing Experience: Had the pleasure of playing The Saticoy Club with Johnny, Ron, and Mark. A real Treat of a Thursday with solid golfers and excellent playing partners! As for the course, The Saticoy Club is an incredibly designed Championship course that offers a wide array of golf holes that are always interesting and challenging. The course is built onto a scenic mountainside that runs proximate to several Avocado and Citrus orchards, and features views of localized mountains, and all the way to the Pacific Ocean. This classic beauty features large mature trees, strategic bunkering throughout, several elevation changes, along with occasional water hazards. In some ways it reminds me of Pasatiempo GC which is an AM Design. The Saticoy Club places premium on accuracy off the tee into mid-sized fairways, and into small to mid-sized greens from the fairway or on par 3s. The course defends itself with well positioned bunkers, medium length rough, fast sloped greens, and funneling wind conditions. There were a few doglegs, but no blind shots. The course was always a fair challenge but required the execution of quality shots at all times, as being offline here introduced difficulty to achieve recovery, as any real championship course should. The course played its yardage, and fairways offered limited roll out on drives and approaches. The course is very well maintained and in overall excellent condition. The course layout is rated a 5 out of 5, conditions are rated a 4.9 out of 5. I note the following: Tee Boxes: Generally level, and always green, no damage. Conditions above average. Fairways: Green, lush, and defined from rough. Grabby with limited rollout. Conditions excellent. Greens: Green, fast in speed, on the medium to firm side, and very tricky to read at times. These Greens are a true test. Speed about an 11. Conditions excellent. Sand: Maintained with excellent consistency. Conditions excellent. Rough: Maintained and defined, about 3 – 4 inches. Conditions excellent. Waste Areas: Noted on a handful of holes, and such were maintained with overgrown nature that offered little to no recovery potential. Conditions excellent. Driving Range: The range was scenic, hitting off an artificial turf surface. The range places you on a mountain top hitting into a valley with various greens and markers that are situated in an area that is fully grassed, with markers from 100 - 225 yards. Range balls were quality Callaway golf balls. Practice Area: I noted a very nice chipping area on a lower tier away from the driving range. Conditions excellent. Did not use. Practice Putting Greens: Two mid-size practice putting greens were noted, both in excellent condition. Speed of the practice putting greens were consistent with course. POP: 4.5 hours – no wait was encountered on any hole. We paced ourselves accordingly. Other: Noted a beautiful clubhouse, restaurant, and golf shop, all were top tier. Conclusion: I don’t have enough positive things to say about this incredible course, it is a True Golf Experience. There are very few courses I can think of as far as layout, conditions, and environment that would be better. I strongly endorse The Saticoy Club and will never miss the opportunity to play here when it is offered. If I lived within 15 miles of this course, I would become a member, it is Golfer’s Dream! This course has lived up to every expectation, and I now list it in my All-Time Top 10. Thank you Johnny and GreensKeeper.org for this GK Outing! This website is amazing. Not only does it provide us with maintenance alerts, up-to-date info about courses, and put on great events, but it also leads to such a cool sense of community among GKers. And then beyond all that, it occasionally leads to invitations to places as special as The Saticoy Club. I joined Johnny, Ron, and Mark out here Thursday for a 2:00 tee time. Arrived around 1:15 to howling winds and figured we were in for a tough day. We started right on time, took our time to soak in the experience, let a group or two play through us, and finished in a little under 5 hours. Fortunately the gusty winds subsided and it turned out to be an amazing day for golf, although very hot for April.

Conditions are fantastic. Greens are smooth, medium-fast speed, and medium firmness. They accepted full shots well. With the course located on a hillside, putts toward the lowland (Camarillo area) were extra fast while putts in the opposite direction (uphill) really need to be struck firmly to get to the hole. We struggled with speed most of the day. A few greens have false fronts and fun contours where you'll find your ball rolling off the surface if you don't land in the right spots. Lots of fun to putt and would be a blast to get to know these greens well as a member. Fairways had great coverage and provided just the right amount of cushion under the ball. Beautiful definition between fairway and rough, even though the rough wasn't too deep nor penal. Farther offline there are areas of extremely deep grass that you would want to avoid at all costs – almost certainly a lost ball. Blue tee boxes were ideal. The bunkers were well maintained but a little firmer than they looked to me; plenty of sand but just a little firmer than I prefer. Going back to the rough – bordering the bunkers are deep grass eyelashes that is some of the deepest, nastiest rough on the course. You'd much rather be in a bunker than just on top of it.

I had the good fortune of playing here in 2014 and was thrilled to get a chance to return. In the seven and a half years since I was there, the course has elevated itself to a new level. Johnny informed me that they had re-done the bunkers since then and even though I loved them back then, they're arguably more impressive now. Overall conditioning was stellar, and the routing is phenomenal with lots of elevation changes, gorgeous bunkering and those fun green complexes. Stoked to hear the LPGA is playing here in October, because maybe this course will gain the notoriety it deserves. I just love it. Those playing in next week's GK/GolfMoose outing are in for a treat.

I also played here in the Golf Moose/ GK event and i totally agree with ag2000 about the course conditions. This was everything I expected it to be at a private club. The staff was great and handled everything with class. The layout is really great with challenging holes but no tricked out/blind holes.The course runs thru some canyons and gives you a quiet peaceful experience . Thanks to Johnny for setting this up.

Played today in the GK/Golf Moose collaboration event at the exclusive and timeless Saticoy Club. What an absolute gem of a course. This is a course that can challenge members day in and out. The Bell family designed a lot of amazing tracks, but this course has to be one that made them proud. The peacefulness and calmness is what lots of golfers dream of when they are looking to join a club, a Zen course. Those members know they have it good. As far as the course goes, it is very well maintained. Perfect tee boxes, amazing fairways, and challenging greens. I struggled with the greens today, they aren't that fast but reading the break was completely frustrating(the members know). The traps are tough but probably could use a little more sand in some of them. This course, for all you will read and hear about it, lived up to the hype. It is challenging but not unfair. A fun day and a gift to play. Thanks to Johnny for all you do. This will not be forgotten, and I hope we get the chance to go at it again. If given the opportunity to play The Saticoy Club, it is well worth it, do not let that moment slip.
