Fairways very bare in many places - lots of dirt lies. Rough inconsistent but seldom punitive.
Greens fairly slow but played just like the practice greens. Sand was plentiful but VERY wet and soggy. Cart GPS seemed to vary by 10 yards from my Garmin watch GPS most of the time. Excellent pre- and post-game facilities.

Played Thursday 5/30 at 11:45am. Payed a special rate of $25 through the SCGA as this was a practice round for my upcoming USGA PubLinks qualifier.

Played Thursday 5/30 at 11:45am. Payed a special rate of $25 through the SCGA as this was a practice round for my upcoming USGA PubLinks qualifier.

Overall conditions were pretty average but better than I was expecting. Fairways had massive rollout most of the day and were a bit on the thin side with a few burned out patches. Rough was hit and miss. Some lies were good to great while others were quite bad and clumpy. Tee boxes were solid with fairly heavy divot damage on the par 3s and a couple other were a bit unlevel. Was only in one bunker all day (left fairway on #1) and it actually had too much sand. Nice sand, but just too much. Greens were good, but medium slow and a bit fuzzy. They still rolled true but you had to give them a go or they weren't going anywhere.

As expected, the normal easterly wind kicked up in the afternoon so expect this on any of your rounds in the Chino area.

This is a really hard review to give. I wanted to like this course. I wanted to so bad. I'm a pretty big hitter, and my buddy has been getting on me about how he wanted to see me play a ridiculously long course, and Los Serranos South is definitely the longest around these parts. We played yesterday afternoon, and were very surprised at how nice the facilities are. The pro shop is excellent, and their staff was very helpful. GolfNow charged us more than their regular rate, so (I forget his name, best pro shop attendant I've dealt with) gave us an even better discount. At that point, I was certain this was going to be a memorable experience. They have six (I think) well cared for putting greens, and the range wasn't bad, especially because it was playing off the grass.

Then, we get on the course. I'd been hearing about their famous black tees, but couldn't find it on the first hole. That's because there were no markers. The greens are relatively slow, and the fairways are okay at best. Most of my local munis have better fairways and greens. And rough. Once I found the black placard on the second hole, I felt a little better, but the box is over grown and extremely un-level. On every black tee box. I understand that most players should never play from the tips, so it is a waste of time and money for a course to focus on those, but most of their advertising is about these tees, so I can't cut them much slack for this.

I love the idea of the layout. If you've never played it, it doesn't look intimidating, but you can definitely put yourself in a world of hurt if you pick the wrong shot. I played my six month record high score on the front nine, which I don't hold against them, I'm actually giving them extra credit for the challenge. I used every club in my bag, which hasn't happened in quite a while.

I only hit one bunker, which I'm pretty happy about because they had some truly bunker frenzy holes, and that bunker was in fantastic shape. My buddy complained about a few of them that he was in, and I have to say those were in crummy shape. Bunkers are meant to be hazards, so I don't feel they should be fantastic, but I know most people would be unhappy with the quality of some of them.

So, all that being said, if you want an inexpensive round of golf on a challenging layout, and you can hit a decently long ball, you'll probably enjoy the south course. It's not pretty, and you'll hit off hard pan around the fairway more than should be expected, but when I got off the 18th green knowing I'd just conquered 7600 yards, there was a sense of accomplishment. I have faith they'll get their course back in shape, and when they do, I'll add them to my rotation. Hell, I'd volunteer my services if it would help them any, that's how much I want to like the course.

I played this course on 4/9 and found it to be in excellent shape. I can't understand why previous players have trashed it so much. The greens are always good and the fairways were very good. Granted they have some bad places but it is still winter and this is an old course. There are 2 kinds of courses; old and new. New being constructed in the last 25 years or so where they have the advantage of planting one kind or grass. The old ones are stuck with what ever blows in so not so consistent. Those who want such perfection should stick to playing the new $60 and up courses and not complain about our old stand bays that most of us can afford.

Played the South course 2/25/13. Wow. What HORRENDOUS shape it's in. The tee boxes are thrashed or hard as rock, grass barely growing on most. The fairways and rough are the SAME, you couldn't tell what started and ended where, grass barely growing on most fairways, it's a real cow-pasture, uneven, bumpy, soft in some spots, hard as rock in others, and dried, hard mud patches all over the place. The greens are just so-so, it's like most public courses everywhere at this time of the year in the Southland. I've played the course many times over the years, I haven't seen it this bad in I don't know how long. I'm amazed that they just had the PGA pre-qualifiers here this month! Was it this bad 3 weeks ago? Probably. If you have the time and money, go elsewhere for at least the next couple months. The place needs to heal, the club needs to let the grass grow back everywhere, and re-seed. It's in desperate need of TLC. Whether the club fixes it or not is doubtful, somebody with authority needs to speak up and let them know how terrible the place is, right now. It's surprising with a good amount of rain that we've had. Nobody's really taking care of the course here. For the price, it's better to play somewhere else at half the cost. It's a robbery to take that money from paying customers with the course in this bad a shape.

Played 2/17, 11:30 tee time, got out around 11:55, finished just as it got dark. Almost a 6 hour round. The tee boxes were ok today, some lush and some thin with lots of loose sand beneath the thin layer of grass. Fairways and rough were in winter condition; patchy, dormant, some weeds and quite a bit of coot damage in areas near water. Some very lush and great areas too though. Bunkers appeared inconsistent, some soft and white, some fairly rocky, some hard packed. The greens were quite bumpy today, very difficult to make putts because every ball bounced off line. Keep in mind that the first green is newer and quite different than the other 17, it looked patchy but was very smooth, quick and true. I usually like this course regardless of condition, the layout is fun and lets you cut loose and bomb it more often than not...but pace of play killed it for me this time.

Played the Northern Trust qualifier on the 7th on the South course. I grew up playing this place and it used to be an awesome track that was always in great shape but not a lot of good things to say about the course these days. I would have figured they would have gone the extra mile for us but..... Mushy and clumpy rough, some bunkers were hard pan and some soft dirt. Greens were decent but the rest of the course was nasty! Managed to make it to Monday qualify at Industry Hills.

Not a bad day on the links. Showed up as a single at 11:00. Very quiet for this place!! Walked into the pro shop and only 1 guy checking in. Told the guys I would hit a small bucket and wait to join a group. A couple well dressed Billy’s (kids) showed up to play the South so I was paired with them thinking they had game. Don’t let the nice PGA look fool you. Anyway, hit balls and went to the tee without seeing anyone in front of us. Billie's thought they would play the back black tees at 7500 yards but I had to set the Billie's straight on that deal!
Great day with overcast and a little humid for this time of year. Another single joined us so away we went as a 4some. Pace of our group was a little slow because the Billie's had to go through the PGA TOUR mannerisms that did nothing for their game aside from look good. BOY, inside I was just rolling!! One kid has every fancy club and high tec shaft known to man but would be hard pressed to break 100. Oh well, public golf at it’s finest. Course was decent and predictable winter golf here with it’s clumpy weed fairways and rough. Greens were acceptable and rolled pretty fast with some bumps. I never got into a bunker but the Billie's did and sand looked pretty good. Managed to shoot 6 over with 2 doubles from inside 80 yards.......... that’s right!
