Weather was prefect as usual. Course was in good condition tee through green. Lots of people out on the course, hard to believe this is a public golf course. Always a great time with friends.

Played on Jan 19, a Saturday morning, having just walked on. Our group, which has not yet played Coronado, was curious about playing here, so I decided to do some reconnaisance to see if we might like it. No doubt, with the amount of play it gets, it is in excellent shape. No other way to describe it, excellent condition for the greens, fairways, rough, and...scenery..... This time of year I'd expect to see some weak spots, but there really were not any I saw, or played. If a convenient course with low cost is what you want, this is an excellent choice. This course is not the least bit challenging, however, as it reminded me of a wide open executive course, just a bit longer. The greens are totally unprotected from virtually all directions, traps are generally small and well off to the side, posing access problems for very few shots. One of the side benefits of such an easy course is that it attracts lots of golfers who are not looking for a challenge, and because of that the greens are in pristine condition--most people who play this course can't even hit the greens in regulation, therefore the divot marks on the green are minimal. Lots of people on this course, if they do reach the green with any length shot, it is usually with a rolling shot which landed off the green. So there are benefits to playing such a weak course. No doubt one of the prettiest settings in San Diego. This is a gem, inexpensive, but not the least bit challenging to good golfers. There are a higher percentage of women on this course than any I've ever played, and I've been playing for decades. Water, yachts, plentiful views of the wonderful Coronado Bridge, it is a treat to play--once. Pace of play, many times, is due to the number of golf shots being hit by each player. If each of the foursome cards an 8 (I don't think this is uncommon on this course), then it slows play. Easy, pretty, and wide open. This is a great experience, but I am actively discouraging our group from playing it because it is so easy.

After a relatively early finish at Balboa, I had to at least scope out Coronado. I've tried walking out here a couple times before, but it was always too crowded. I walked up to the starter's booth a little before 11:00 and he put me out with the next group on the tee! I was surprised to actually feel a bit "rushed" teeing off on #1 here, but it was a pleasant surprise to say the least. The front nine moved slowly, but we never had to wait too much. Then, the two groups directly in front of us left after 9 and we never had to wait once on the back nine. All in all, we were done in just under 4.5 hours, so I can't complain about that on this course! The course was in excellent condition!!! The fairways were fantastic, easily the nicest kikuyu fairways I've played this year behind Torrey and Malibu. Unfortunately, I was in the rough a lot more than the fairways. It was a bit inconsistent in terms of length, but mostly pretty lush and green throughout the course. The sand traps were also great with fluffy white sand. The tee boxes were all good except for the par-3s, which were extra chewed up. The greens were also quite nice, rolling pretty smoothly at medium speeds. The first hole green looked a bit beat up, but the rest were great. I could not get used to these flat greens. A guy in my group called it "NBC" (as in "No Break Coronado") and he wasn't kidding. The ball rarely breaks much at all. Unless, of course, when you finally give in and play it straight, then it will break (still not much, though)! The reasonable price ($51 with cart, $35 to walk), great conditions and gorgeous weather added up to a very enjoyable round at Coronado. The layout itself didn't "wow" me too much. Pretty flat and relatively forgiving from tee to green. The back nine does get somewhat more challenging/interesting and the setting is so nice along the bay and at the foot of the iconic bridge. I can understand why it gets so crowded and this is a course I don't mind taking a little extra time to enjoy. Glad I finally got to play it!
