Took advantage of the GK Review Guru deal today and joined JohnnyGK, Rat-Patrol and AndrewZ28 for an 11:00 tee time here. We teed off a little early and enjoyed a nice relaxed pace. Nice breeze kept it from being too hot this afternoon. I've been hearing good things about Mt. Woodson lately, but always take them with a grain of salt because this course has had so many ups and downs in recent years. I was hoping for something decent because I really love this course and it's been a few years since my last visit. Like Jim said, it's not just in good shape compared to how it has been. It is just in very good shape right now and that makes me happy. Tee boxes have a lot of divots because the teeing areas are small and so many people are hitting irons off tees, but I never had a problem teeing it up in a good level spot. The fairways were great. There are a few little brown spots here and there, but mostly they are super fluffy and green. I always had ideal lies! The rough is not deep, but thick and just sticky enough to make you work. The bunkers are on a thin/crunchy side. Playable, but could use some fresh sand. The greens were receptive and rolling at medium speeds. This has always been a personal favorite of mine and an ideal representation of what good "target" style golf is all about. It is very unique in its presentation and it is such a beautiful rural setting with the oak trees, boulders and hills. I am so glad to see it turning around and it seems the new ownership is really making a major effort. The new pro shop is pretty basic and they are currently under construction for a full grille area. Currently, they just have a limited food menu with typical snacks and drinks. I hope it's not another few years before I return. Seeing and playing this course in nice shape again reminded me why I have such an affinity for it.

Played today at 11 am with fellow GK Guru's sixpez, AndrewZ28 and the man himself JohnnyGK. I hadn't played here in about 20 years for one reason or another and after todays visit those reasons are about all gone. We found the course in very nice condition, and I don't mean "in very nice condition considering the past", I mean, very nice condition.
We played the Blues which seem rather tame on paper at only 5764 yards, but with a slope of 133 that yardage can pack a punch. The layout is quite enjoyable with a couple sets of holes that, 'appear' similar, but play quite differently and can catch you off guard if you assume one is like the other. This is a thinking players course, an approach shot course, where positioning your ball is very important. Course knowledge can lead to better and better scoring. Knowing where to be is a big asset.
Tees: mostly level with good coverage
Fairways: always had a good lie and 90% green with only a few small brownish areas
Rough: not long but sticky and thick, the ball tends to sit down
Bunkers: I was in a couple green side traps that weren't "fluffy" but very playable and well maintained
Greens: tricky, undulating and tricky, being in the proper area of the green makes putting a bit easier, but I had trouble reading them . . . again course knowledge will make things much easier
Layout: fun and varying, plus the bridge leading to the third hole is really cool! There are houses around, but not in play.
Customer service: very good, saw the snack cart a few times and there were water stations with cold water on a hot day
Overall: I will be back soon, the course is great fun and is now in real good condition! I was worried about the temperatures being in the 90's, but the breeze made it very comfortable.

Had a great day, course is in pretty good shape overall. Teeboxes were nice, played the Blues and they had them all the way back, nice and level and good grass coverage. Some were very hard still, but they were nice.

Fairways were in great shape! About as nice as I've ever seen them out there. I did nail a drive on 12 and found a divot, pretty bummed as that hole eats me up.

Greens were nice and lush and very receptive to shots, but they were a little too long and kinda slow and bumpy, no one really holed any putts, I couldn't make a darn thing which was frustrating, once they mow them, they will be nice.

Didn't find a trap, but my buddies said they were ok. Rough didn't seem too penal, either, ball sat up nice and it was only 2-3 inches high.

POP was just fine 4.5 hrs for a Saturday, not bad.

I'd say get out there. They gave us $42 email rate, even though I couldn't book a time online, I called em and asked for the email rate and Nick and Todd in the pro shop honored it and everyone was friendly. Cart girl was around a few times, just great Had a blast.

Greens are looking really good. Rolled a touch above medium and were receptive. With afternoon rounds they have been a little bumpy. Noticed a few putts take a wondrous route to the hole.
Tees still better then they have been for many years. They are so small it will be interesting if they can remain in decent condition?
If you haven't played here in a while because of the conditions. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised in how the course is playing right now?

They rebuilt the proshop, but it doesn't look very different from the outside compared to the old one. They have not been able to finish the grill, because of the Mafia Ramona waste water demanding extortion money to reconnect to a system that had already been connected to ! They have put more then one business 'Out of business'
They have a cart girl back and was told they would be there daily?

Played 6/25/16 3pm $39 POP 3:45 $29 w/ players club Have been noticing how green the course has been looking when I drive by in the morning. It had been a while since I played here. Was not disappointed. Curse was in pretty good shape. Fairway's mostly light green and some what lush. A little firm underneath but very nice to hit from. Greens in great shape. Receptive and running around medium speed. Were a little bumpy from the day's traffic, but not bad. Traps firm and can be a little difficult. Tees not as bad as they have been. Some have seen a great improvement. Which has always been a problem area for this course. It's nice to see the improvements that the new ownership has done. Even the little things. New yardage markers in the fairways. Every hole now has yardage information on posts next to the T boxs. A lot of brush trimming to open some views of holes & surrounding areas. Signed up for the players club. $29 for the year gives you $10 off & 1 hour earlier twilight. I need to start bringing a small club set in my truck for a stop off on the way home!

First of all, let me put to rest the myth that this course is only marginal.. Wrong !! I normally go to GreensKeeper to check out courses I haven't played, or haven't played in awhile. It is a long haul for my playing partner and I to come down from the L.A./Orange County area. But Another friend of ours, and his wife encouraged us to try it, and I'm sure glad they did ! The staff could not have been nicer, and one of them had told me that the greens had been punched a month ago. There was no sign of any roughness on the greens, and they were in awesome shape. The scenery was spectacular, and the layout was challenging.. Tends to play longer than the scorecard states due to the semi-narrow, and rolling fairways. My only knocks on the course is the lack of sand in some of the traps, and a little thin in some areas of the course. But overall a very memorable outing. We played 36 holes, and enjoyed everyone of them.. :))

Played yesterday for $27 on teeoff.com and I am glad I didnt pay much more. First things first I love this course for the visual aspect but the quality at the moment is not there.

Fairway is in transformation as mentioned by a previous reviewer. With that being said the grass is in two very different lengths as they are not cutting the turf to allow growth. this is leaving the fairways very bumpy and strange lies.

The greens are the best conditioned part of the course but rock hard. I had a few shots just bounce off the green. They were rolling very fast with any down hill putt virtually unstoppable near the hole unless its uphill.

Tee Boxes were very damaged and not a lot of places to tee up which is sad. I hope in a month or two the fairways will be better and the construction on the club house will be done.

As for staff I think they only had two workers during my round. One looked like a manager who was running carts and a pro shop associate. No Marshall, no Cart girl :(.. In all this course is fun but dont pay more than $40 as its in poor shape at the moment.

I went out as a single and caught up to the pack on hole 4. I did join up with some guys from Rhode island and enjoyed the rest of the round

One good note was greens keepers were watering so hopefully the course comes around soon.

Played 2/21/16 3 pm $23 Was able to get 14 holes in. Course is on it's way of coming out of it's winter sleep. Fairway's are mostly dormant. The new grass is just starting to grow. They are very firm and require good ball striking. Like the previous reviewer had written. In a few more weeks, it should be in much better shape. I heard that they are considering a light aeration of the fairway's in the coming weeks to help the grass fill in better. Greens were firm and ran at a good pace of medium fast. They were their typical afternoon bumpy. Overall in pretty good shape. Traps remain to be very hard packed sand here. The Tees were the worst I think I've ever seen them. For the 10+ years I've been playing here they have never had 'Good' Tees. But, right now they are mostly dirt. Their tees are very small and understandably difficult to repair and keep in good shape, but it's something they need to work on !! They are in the process of rebuilding their club house, so they are under construction at the pro shop. They have finished their new cart barn and are continuing to work on the course. If you're a good ball striker and a fan of Mt. Woodson. With a good deal you can find some fun. One of my favorite twilight course's in SD.

Love this course, always a pleasure to play, talked with the superintendent, with the warm weather they started to bring the Bermuda back from dormancy and should be lush green in a few weeks, and also said the course conditions in the coming months will be the best condition it has been in several years. They have been doing many improvements at the course over the last few months; looks like this course will be in great shape this spring and summer season. Highly recommend this course in San Diego County.
