Played on a Sunday afternoon. At $30 to walk, it is a weekend bargain. We waited for our fourth and they allowed several groups to go ahead of us. The tees and fairways are showing some signs of a lot of play. Some areas are well divotized, mostly filled in with sand. I did notice a few, small areas of unmarked ground under repair in fairways, most notably in 18 fairway and 13 fairway. The greens were soft and showed signs of unrepaired ball marks. Not bad by any means, but worth mentioning. It took about 4:40 to play, walking behind a couple of slower groups and waiting just a little on some shots. One thing this course does that I really like: they send an e-mail thanking you for your patronage and a short survey link asking you what they can do to improve. How many courses do that?

Out today 7/23/2012 1st twilight group with my buddy Bigswede..joined by a nice single on hole #5 played back tees at over 6800yds with a really tough wind today....conditions were great in the fairways, on the tees and on the greens. Every part of this course right now is lush. Fairways lush lies ball sitting up some closely cut parts of the fairway in good shape. Fringes soft and lush, tees level and lush...some of the more lush tees I have seen at olivas. Sand bukers white and fluffy. Greens held shots like darts with deep soft pitch marks which were a task to repair. The greens here are not fast...more like medium to slow speed but in good shape. Did see more ball marks on them today so fixed a plenty of them.....note to self if I ever have kids I am not going to take them when they are younger to a course with a 15-20mph breeze in the afternoon and am certainly not going to take 5-7 minutes on each green reading putts like its the masters like the group in front of us did....to play this course in over 5 hours on a monday was ridiculous today and caused our group and groups behind a long day...parents in front of us had no clue what so ever....rant off....Olivas keep up the great conditions.

Played in a mini-tourney here today, with a 9:00 a.m. start. I was hoping we were early enough to miss the ocean breeze but it started about 10:00 so it was a factor all day. I really enjoyed the course. I wish I had played it a few times before. The views from the tee can be intimitidating and I chose the wrong strategy at times. The course conditions were good. The fairways and rough were lush. I agree with others that they make liberal use of the white paint to mark ground under repair and the local rule that the "natural" areas are grounds under repair helped speed up pay. If you go into those areas, the odds are hit and miss on having a playable lie. I found 10 balls I kept, including two ProVs that saw action in the round. The natural areas can be punitive. The only negative were the greens. They were okay, just on the slow side in my opinion. They were okay and fairly true, but not up to the quality of the rest of the course in my opinion. I was not in the sand so I can't comment on it. I liked the links layout. The amenities are spartan (trailer pro shop and food service combined) but the golf is first class. We played in about 5 hours. Slower than I hoped but it gave me time to look for balls.

Played Sunday 7/8 first or second group out at twilight. Course is in good condition. Tee boxes and green are good. Fairways are good with some areas of GUR marked off. Love this layout with a wide variety of holes and differing challenges during the round. Some hols are straight forward while others require forced carries and well placed drives to get on the greens. Several holes are open in the front and require you to play it short and bounce the ball on. Overall, always a good experience and a course that is fun to play for golfers of all levels.

Played on Sunday afternoon. It was a great respite from the inland heat. I am glad I brought a windbreaker, because it was cool. Check in was slow; there was only one guy handling phones, cashiering, and retrieving drivers' licenses for cart returns. Weird, I don't remember Olivas holding drivers' licenses. The course conditions were good. Lush conditions everywhere; however, many fairways had marked GUR. Some greens were a little bumpy at times. The rough (first cut) was nicely mowed; the deep rough/native areas were as penal as ever. The native areas have a mixture of tall fescues and kikuyu grass. I prefer a more manicured look or a natural look, and if they mowed or removed all the taller kikuyu I would not be heartbroken. Kikuyu is not a CA native grass. yeah, I tried to hit one out of the deep kikuyu and suffered for it. Overall, the course is in fine shape and the rates are decent. Well worth the one hour plus drive for me.

played 6-26 with johnnygk, longball23, and toprank. course is in really good shape right now. tee boxes tightly mown and level stances even on three pars. ball sits up real nice in fairways. first cut of rough about 2 inches and thick will grab your club if you dont hit it firm. outside of rough is native grass tall thick and nasty if you dont find a bare spot your ball is probably lost. sand traps in good shape with soft white sand. for me greens are a little disappointing. a little bumpy and on the slow side would like to see them faster like when they first reopened. great practice area large putting green two chipping areas one to a green and a nice driving range. costumer service here is always top notch.

Played Olivas Links with longball23, rgm2525 and TopRank Tuesday late morning. The place was pretty busy because of their Twilight Tuesdays (TW rates all day on Tuesday). Took us about 5 hours to finish but it was worth it. I just love courses where you can get out and BOMB your drives then have near perfect fairway lies (with exception to small areas that are marked as GUR) waiting for you when you get to the ball. The decision they made to use Paspalum turf when they redesigned Olivas Links from the old Kikuyu/Bermunda turf of Olivas Park GC was so smart. Right now, and moving forward through the summer, Olivas Links will be playing beautifully through the green. On the greens expect moderately slow surfaces rather than the old pool table perfectly smooth pure bent greens of the past…yet still very playable and fun to experience. With the bunkers I had mixed experiences. Excellent sand on hole #9 fairway and thick coarse sand in the left bunker of #18. In general I saw mostly well kept traps and quality sand. The tee boxes were perfect. Cut tight and level. The rough in not much a factor unless you find the second the cut, then its hit & miss weather you find your ball at all! Great service on Tuesday from the on course beverage cart which I saw many times. Great staff in the proshop and on the first tee. My only complaint is the driving range. I don’t mind hitting off mats if need be but please purchase some new mats that provide level lies. Dig this course right now and looking forward to my next round at Olivas Links hopefully sooner than later.

Played Olivas Links late this morning 6/26/12 at 11:30am black tees. They have Twilight Tuesday specials so the pace of play was 5 hours walking. Beautiful weather and courteous staff. Great practice facilities. Played here last on 4/30/12 and the greens have improved some and are a bit quicker than in the last several months. I would still like to see a firmer roll but they are getting better with time. They hold approach shots well. Was not in any bunkers but saw that the bunkers are some of the better white soft sand bunkers in Ventura County. Both the fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers have the same texture sand. You want to stay out of the fairway bunkers at all costs. The fairways were green, semi lush and in great shape. Some GIR areas noted and marked off with white circles. Tee boxes were lush level and a treat to play from. Even the par 3's had lush lies that could be found. The rough around the fairways were lush and in good shape. Native grasses on the opposite sides of the cartpaths=lost ball. Back nine here including #11,#13 and #16 will challenge you to the max from back tees. I would recommend this course and if they cut and firm the greens up this place will be off the hook nice.
