played 5-9 with longball23 a friend and a singal that joined us. teed of 2:10 twilight rate of $28. they had held a cga qualifying round here earlier in the day so the pins where in really tough postions. tee boxes in good shape and mostly level. fairways where a little firm but good grass and lots of roll. rough was in descent shape about one to two inches and easy to hit from but does have some bare spots and patchy grass. the one sand trap i found on 11 had nice fluffy sand and easy to hit from. the aprons around the greens where a little firmer then normal which really lets you play a lower shot that will run up to the greens. greens where in really good shape firm with medium fast speed and rolling really good.

Tee Time: Thursday May 9th 2:10pm-28 bucks walking twilight rate playing with RGM2525, his buddy and a single Tees: Blue Weather: 70's..very windy to start the round at 15mph +, wind died on back nine It was nice to get back on my home course after a 5 week or so break. Greens: 8.5/10 Very good shape, firm and fast and putting close to an 11 on stimp. They had a SGGA tournament out this morning and the pins were challenging and the greens were very nice Fringes: 9/10...Very green and very firm with little to no ball marks or scuff marks Fairways 7.5/10...not as lush as I have seen them in May but pretty green and rolling a ton. No bad lies in the fairways here...in good shape Tees: 8/10...Level and cut beautifully, very little to no divot damage on the par 3's...in good shape Rough 7/10..For the most part green lush grass depending on the green or fairway you choose. There are some clumps of grass from hole to hole and if you get in between a rough clump it could be tough on your club. Bunkers 6/10...Very firm packed sand but nicely raked...these bunkers are rugged and thats how this course wants them...they are a true penalty if in them. Overall 8/10...Course is in very good condition right now and with the summer months coming up the fairways should be perking up even more. They might be punching the greens this month so check with the pro-shop beforehand. We really enjoyed our round today even though POP was 4 hours 50 minutes. Keep up the good work Rustic.

Came back into town from SLO on Sunday and was lucky to squeeze a round in at Rustic Canyon in Moorpark. Got a decent twilight deal, tee'd off at 2:20pm.

Course is in good shape, fairways are pretty tight and rough is well kept. The greens are quick with some nasty undulations. As in previous reviews, there is no real fringe, just kind of a blended fringe/green look. Many of these greens have serious slopes leading up and away from them, so if your short game is lacking it isn't uncommon to see a chip land on the green only to roll steeply down the other side.

Plenty of elevated tees and forced carries, wayward tee shots will find fairway bunkers or the mountains. Most of the par 3's are short par 3's, but I suggest when in doubt go with one extra club.

Usually plays 4 to 4 1/2 hours, but today was real slow and we finished with a 5 hour round.

This is a solid course, value is excellent at the twilight rate, definitely worth a look.

Had a round today with fellow GKer's Sabram, JohnnyGK, Jerry64, and Mike. Tee it up at 9:00 and got off right away. Course is in good condition. Fairways are green and still have some roll, slightly hard but still provide good scoring chances. Greens were hard and rolling medium to fast, guessing maybe 9.5. Holding shot fair, but not all would bite and hold. Very interesting breaks here. The Greens seem to not follow any logic when reading them, putts influenced by the slightest nob or hill. Also when you play here there is no fringe. Just a lot of shaven area that produces some very long and complicated putts, but fun.
The rough for the most part does not really come into play here due to the length, maybe 1 inch and the lack of it. When you due find the rough it is clumped in spots and very thin in others presenting some difficult lies. Bunkering here is very poor, I understand about waste bunkers and what you find, however 1 inch stones and larger everywhere you look is just unacceptable, and just asking for club damage. The Greenside bunkers were not much better, a lack of sand is the major problem here, maybe 1 inch at best, and then hard brown clay, making it very difficult to produce any results from them. The course has a few elevation changes but nothing to dramatic, there are a few risk reward shots that present themselves. Surprisingly today the wind that you normally find here was not really in play, it was blowing but only maybe 10mph.
I feel that the rack rate here could be lower, and the riding fee should be lowered as well 60.00 for this course riding is a little steep. Overall if I could find a good deal I would be back to play here, it provides some stunning views and is quite a secluded feeling course with plenty of nature running across the fairways. Out of 10 I would give the course a 7.

Diving range here is not all that great, chewed up hitting stalls and limited flight range balls that are very hard, practice green is smaller in size putt fairly true to on course conditions, however be alert as it butts right up on the shaven back side of the 18th hole.

Just finished playing a round with GK’ers Jerry64, Sabram and a gentleman named Jim. We teed off at 9:00am and got around in just over 4:30 hours. Great company on a beautiful day. As far as the course, its playing firm and lush…exactly how you want it so to fully experience the links design. The greens are smooth and running around a 10 speed. The aprons surrounding the greens are playing beautiful, smooth and running around a 9 speed. Get your flat stick warmed up prior to your round because this is where most of your shots are won or lost. The fairways are a little on the dry side, cut tight but lush providing lots of roll. The rough just off the fairway is mostly lush but spotty at times so it’s hit and miss weather your ball will be sitting up, sitting down or on a thin spot. Greenside as well as around the bunkers the rough is very lush. The bunkers contain decent quality sand, mostly firm with no complaints from me playing from them. The tee boxes are in the same condition as the fairways but a little more lush. My advice, play Rustic Canyon as soon as you can. Its going to be a challenge as the temperatures continue to warm up to keep it as lush plus as play increases the greens and aprons will get marked up/less smooth. Aeration of the greens is anticipated to occur towards the end of May so now until then should be fantastic. This is beautiful course and exceptional golf experience. I always enjoy my rounds here.

Overall this is a great public course. I played on 4/12/2013 and the weather and conditions were pristine. I heard some complaints of the pace of play here but it stayed consistent all day and we were done in a reasonable amount of time. The marshals were patrolling the course and were diligent about getting after anyone who got behind. We got our warning after we had two lost balls on one hole and were requested to catch up. Some golfers complain about this but if it keeps the pace moving, I am all for it.

The fairways are in better shape then most I have played this year. Mostly green and relatively firm. Drives were rolling an extra 10 to 20 yards.

The greens are unusual at Rustic Canyon. There is no fringe per se and the area around the green was cut just as close. Made it hard to chip but you can putt from almost anywhere near the green. The speed was moderate.

I would definitely recommend the trip to this course. The price is good and the scenery really makes you feel like you are away from the city.

Pros- This might be the best I have ever seen Rustic. The greens rolled perfect, smooth, and very fast even with the rain. The fairways are really greening out and I enjoyed the layout as always. This course is really love hate for me and today I loved it(played well). Collars are super smooth and the bang for buck is off the charts!
Cons- I hate the rivet rough. The thick grass, bare spot, thick grass. It is part of the challenge but its tough. I was dissappointed with the weather... that is about it. WILL RUSTIC PLEASE RE-EVALUTATE THEIR SLOPE AND COURSE RATING PLEASE!!!!
Overall- 12 times a year I play here, this was a great experience

Greens: 8.5/10 They are in very good shape and firm right now prob rolling close to a 10.5 on the stimp. They are holding irons and are receptive. They putted very true with minimal to no bounce. Kudos to the greenskeeper.

Fairways: 7/10 Driving in I could already see the green bermuda growing in. I was very impressed since last Monday how much more green grass I saw. They will probably be fantastic this spring and summer if this week's improvement is any indication. You still get a ton of roll.

Tees: 7.5/10 They have also improved since last week. Nice lush green grass on the 3 par's and as always its appreciated that mostly every tee box here is level.

Rough 7.5/10. Lush anywhere from 2-3 inches depending on the hole

Bunkers 7/10.. many bunkers have added new sand

Overall: 8/10 Love the layout...new black tee box location on #14 makes this 498 yd par 4 a beast...I hit a good drive 290ish 6 iron to left rough chip in bird...was stoked

Friendly staff inside the pro-shop, nice warm up area and our pace of play was 4 hours 30 minutes today.

Fairways: 5/10 Still thin was hoping the rain Friday would soften them and green them up but still not the case. Many hard pan areas.

Tees: 5/10 Still thin with a couple of the par 3's with some divot damage

Greens: 8/10 Wow highlight of the course. They were rolling close to a 10.5 firm and beautiful. Little to no ball marks and a treat to putt on. They were receptive but if you are on the wrong side of the hole with how firm they are you are in trouble. Just a side note that they had 3-4 pin placements today that I have never seen before in places that were tough...an awesome challenge today.

Rough: 5/10 Inconsistent from hole to hole...certain areas lush green grass at 2-3 inches such as just left of #14 green and left of #18 fairway and other areas that are dry and hard pan.

Bunkers: 5/10 Was in greenside left bunker on #3 and it was raked with firm packed sand.

Overall 6.5/10>>> waiting a couple months for the fairways and rough to grow in and it should be back to its peachy shape.
