Played in the first ever Moose/GK Private event at Wood Ranch CC. Rode the Blues with David, Jeff, and Jacky from the Oxnard area. A great group to be part of, and we started on the challenging 17th, a long par-3 up the hill. We finished the round in a little over 5 hrs but it didn't feel that long. It was an enjoyable experience, and we should be excited for more of these awesome opportunities from GK/Moose(thank you Johnny).

Wood Ranch has been on my bucket list for awhile. I looked into a membership here right before the pandemic. I believe this course would be a good private course to join if that is what you are looking for. They are currently taking new members according to the pro in the shop, and unless a lot has changed, I feel like this is a very reasonable membership fee.
The course is challenging and long. The type of course you could play over and over and still feel the challenge. The greens are really good, fast and challenging. The fairways were awesome, and the tee boxes were level and ideal. The rough was cut short, but if this course wanted to up the challenge it would not be hard for them to create a tournament level course. Fun day, awesome course, highly recommend it.

Played in the first-ever Greenskeeper.org + GolfMoose private course collab outing here today. Paired with Tom, Shawn and another Mark and started as group 18A. Pace seemed good but was actually slower than it felt, starting on time at 10:00 and finishing in around 4:55. The event was well organized and Johnny gave away some prizes to one lucky foursome before it started. Good times!

The course is in very nice condition. Greens were excellent although maybe a little inconsistent in speed (or harder to read than I thought). They were medium fast on most putts, but downhillers were very fast. Downhill putts would break quite a bit, but uphill putts didn’t as much. The greens were smooth and accepted full shots well. (My approach to the multi-tiered 18th — my first hole of the day – landed about 20 feet behind the hole and spun back some 60 feet or so off the front of the green!) Fairways were very nice and there was a clear delineation between fairway and rough. Rough was probably about 2.5 inches deep and not too penal in most spots, although it would slow balls down pretty quickly. Further off line there was some deep stuff. Blue tee boxes were all good. Bunkers looked good but the greenside bunker I was in was sort of thin while a fairway bunker had plentiful sand. Would prefer to see that flipped.

This was my first time here. It’s a nice residential course that reminded me in spots of Braemar CC, Coto de Caza, Glen Annie and maybe Twin Oaks. It’s yet another solid option in Ventura County, although in the immediate area, I would prefer Moorpark CC or Rustic Canyon. Congratulations Johnny on what seemed like a very successful event!

Wood Ranch golf course is an amazing course I played a few times years ago but haven't played in a while. It was great to have opportunity to play it again. I forgot how difficult the course is which really demands the best out of players. With many up/down tee shots, frequent wind, water hazards and several doglegs the course definitely requires forethought and strategy prior to making shots if you want to score your best. My performance playing it even has me thinking about upgrading my clubs and getting my club-head speed checked and improved. The course was in good shape and I echo comments in recent reviews posted by other GK members on the good condition of the fairways, greens, tee boxes and rough areas. I will say some of the traps had rather shallow sand in my opinion and one was even wet and hard-packed for whatever reason. I hope I get a chance to play the course again in the near future as I live quite close to it.

Played with Mark_6m and two other kind Gentlemen. This course reminds me a bit of the Classic Club in Palm Desert, CA. It has a bit of everything, tight fairways, punishing rough, a lot of well placed sand bunkers, water, natural hazards, and fast undulating greens. This is a course where you will need to bring your golf game or it may lead to a long golf day. It does not allow for bad golf shots at any point.

The course was in very good condition, especially considering how hot and windy it gets in this part of the Ventura County. This course is very well maintained, and a real treat to play. This was my third time playing the course over the past 20 years, and it has never disappointed. I believe this course is in better condition than other quality local public courses, and categorize it as a top shelf golf course.

The customer service experienced when picking up my golf cart and ordering beverages at the snack bar was very good. Was never treated like an outsider visiting a club. Strong endorsement for Wood Ranch.

Enjoyed a Terrific-Tuesday of Golf with the GK Gurus at WRGC. I can best describe WRGC as a fun Players Course. Here’s my take: WRGC is a very well-designed course that places premium on accuracy off the tee and into greens. This is not a golf course that can be negotiated with if you're too arrant with the golf ball. The course features clear definition between its mid-sized fairways and rough areas, well placed bunkering on fairways and proximate to greens, along with strategic water hazards, and fairly fast greens on this day, which I have seen faster in the past. The course is primarily flat except for 7, 8, 16, and 17 which do offer elevation changes from tee to green, along with some attractive views of localized housing and grape orchards. The course lends itself towards a Championship Style layout, certainly a treat to play. On this day wind speeds were calm, peaking at 10 -15 mph when gusting. The course seemed to play it's yardage for the most part. The course was well manicured and in above-average condition overall. The course layout is rated a 5 out of 5, conditions are rated a 4.33 out of 5. I note the following: Tee Boxes: Level and lush, no damage. Sometimes the grass may have been a bit longer, no more than ½” an inch too long. No effect in this regard. Fairways: Green at times tight, some very limited areas were undergoing sod repair which appeared to be maintenance related. Greens: Green, medium-fast in speed, and medium softness as all good shots checked and spun desirably. No damage observed. Speed about a 10 – 10.5. Sand: Well maintained and firm. Rakes were present. Rough: rough was well defined from the fairway and green collars but not too overgrown, about 2 – 4 inches. Didn’t experience the burying effect in the rough, fortunately. Waste Areas: - Waste areas were abundant on various holes, and did not offer the opportunity of recovery from such due to their overgrown nature, not to mention the possible presence or rattlers. Driving Range: The range is stunning, despite hitting from mats. You are on an elevated perch hitting into a grass valley with green markers at 100, 150, 200, 225, and 250 yards. Range ran out at about 300ish. Range balls were your typical yellow rangers, but in very good condition. Hitting from this range was a real treat, if you enjoy the pre-round or post-round experience of hitting golf balls. Practice Putting Greens: Both practice putting greens are ample and very well maintained. They seemed faster than the course greens, and more like the speed I have encountered when I previously played here. POP: 4.5 hours – no wait was encountered on any hole; it was simply our group’s own pace. I enjoyed the group's time, certainly. The WRGC facility included a bar / restaurant for members, snack bar at the turn, and a very nicely stocked pro shop. Service received at these venues was excellent. I met the Membership Director – Janet, she was very professional, warm, and welcoming. If looking to join a quality golf club with the emphasis on golf this is a really good one, you should give Janet a call or email. All in all, really enjoyed this course and certainly wish I could play it more often. If I lived a bit closer, this would be my club due to how much I enjoy the track and the strategy of playing it. It certainly suits a player's eye, with no holes that offer deficiency, granted some are created better than others, with most being better. In conclusions, I certainly endorse playing this track if given the opportunity. Looking forward to my next visit here. Thank you GK for the outing.

First time at Wood Ranch, and didn't know really what to expect...man, what an AMAZING course! Went with Johnny and the guys on an outing on 6/29/21, and found an Absolute GEM tucked away in Simi Valley, you would think you were in Palm Springs or something on some of the holes. Immaculate fairways and greens, beautiful water features, world-class bunkering, fantastic practice area and friendly staff.

Played 6/29 with the Gurus and it was an excellent experience.

The tee boxes were in great shape. My only complaint were that they were a bit fluffy and my tees had to be a bit longer since they had to be a bit ‘deeper’ to get the height I like.

The fairways played very nicely. They were a nice level firmness allowing for good rollout but still proceed a great hitting surface. With all the heat there were understandably some wet spots out there from overwatering.

The rough was healthy and not too think. The ball rarely sank all the way to the bottom giving you some options on how to advance the ball.

The ‘native’ areas came into play a lot and even found some fescue type grass between holes that really gobbles up your ball (looking at you #9).

The bunkers had a layer of high quality sound that may by a bit thin for my liking, would get to the rocky bottom a little too quickly.

The greens were the highlight of the course to me. They were in fantastic shape, rolled true, were medium-fast (practice green ran a few ticks quicker), and held shots well that came in with some height and spin.

The green surrounds were beautiful as well, giving you a near perfect lie for chipping the ball with options which led to a lot of good shots in our group. I believe I had 10 one putt pars, and Johnny even chipped in on 18 for bird.

Out yesterday, 6/29 with GK Gurus for a review round proceeding the Golf Moose/GK Private Course outing on Monday 7/19. Such a great time. Even though I remembered little from my one and only previous round at Wood Ranch Golf Club in 2010, I did remember from that previous round what a fun golf course this is…as well as challenging. How challenging? ... well back in 1987 the Senior Tour stopped coming to Wood Ranch because of difficult greens and high winds. Well, as a resident of nearby Thousand Oaks with relatives in Simi Valley, sure it can get windy but most of the time it is simply beautiful. Yesterday teeing off at 3:00pm and finishing around 7:15pm weather was gorgeous as was the golf course. I took so many photos…check them out posted here.

The layout is fantastic. Long, challenging off the tee with many fairway bunkers and hazards, many doglegs (most left-right), interesting and challenging on approach with well bunkered guarded greens, loaded with risk/reward holes, elevation changes and of course challenging undulating greens. Never a dull moment. In fact always an interesting shot requiring accuracy and thought. Above all, like I mentioned already, this is a FUN track.

Playing conditions were great. Greens smooth, moderately fast and holding shots. Fairways lush yet firm bermunda turf with full coverage other than a few ground under repair sections near the greens. Rough mostly lush but spotty thin at times. Thankfully the bermunda/kikuyu rough was cut down and very playable. I can only imagine how much tougher the course would be if the rough was up. Bunkers, all well-groomed with quality sand. The first inch or two of sand is soft but then is very firm. Totally playable and easy to hit out of but at first it took a little getting used too. The great thing is ALL the bunkers are the same sand texture so one you get them dialed your sand game improves. And let me tell you, I was in a ton of them – lol. Tee boxes in super shape. Immaculate and level.

If I was considering joining a Private Course, I would for sure, given how fantastic the golf is, the very polite service/staff, seriously consider Wood Ranch GC. Played Wood Ranch yesterday afternoon. We got lucky and temperature and weather was perfect and not too hot as I expected it to be in Simi Valley. I've been waiting a long time for opportunity to play the course and it was well worth the wait. Beautiful course but fairly difficult for a currently 100+ scoring guy like me these days, to be honest. It's kinda funny I only parred two holes which are two tough par 3's on the course, holes 13 (155 yards over water) and 17 (159 yards up steep hill). The fairways were in pretty good shape but there was a few bare spots and some ground under repair before a couple of greens as well. There was also a few little bare spots on some greens. Overall though the course was in pretty good shape. There are quite a few doglegs and up/down hits, definitely what I like to call a '3-dimensional' course. You need to take your A game. There's pretty good amount of lateral water hazards to avoid as well and rough that will consume your ball to probably not be found; and you might not want to look for a ball either this time of year due to possible rattlesnake hazards we have in Ventura County. There was no cart girl but it was a weekday which might have affected that. All the staff I encountered were very nice and cordial. I would love to play the course again someday - after I try to pull my game together better.
