Played Anaheim Hills on Sunday, 11/10 for my GK Cup match with Sr714 at 11:20 using an UnderPar.com two-person voucher. Course didn't seem that busy when we arrived, as they were calling groups to the tee early. We didn't desire to start early and started right on time, paired with two very novice golfers. POP was slow (partly our foursome's fault, partly backed up anyway), but faster than it seemed. We finished in just about 5 hours, letting one group play through on the 3rd tee.

Course conditions are decent and mixed. The greens were really nice, smooth, soft and medium-fast with downhill putts getting especially quick. Definitely the highlight, and the rest of the course looked better than it played, imo. I had lots of iffy lies on thin grass. Fairways and rough were sometimes good, sometimes bad. Tee boxes were mostly beat up. Bunkers were good.

I hadn't played here in a little over 5 years. Sorta bummed to see they cut that first par 3 into a shorter hole (I remember it being 250+). Still lots of quirky holes, but there's also something I like about the course... houses don't really come into play much and it has a nice "feel" to it. Worth the rate we paid; full rack rate I'm not so sure.

8/19 using underpar voucher $67 2some for play after 1000 and range balls--arrived at about 9 --quick check in and starter even offered to send us straight out-- but took 15 minutes of warm up was on the tee at 920. Course has a golfer friendly philosophy that is willing to move golfers up when there are open tee times--nice!!
Fairways were varied with some areas rather wet/soggy with good cover, some dry and thin with even some bare areas, and some goldilocks just right. Rough bordered fairways was more a factor in slowing the ball that affecting shots until getting closer to the greens with deeper thicker growths. Tees were mostly on the thin side and some were uneven--3 were off limits and markers were moved up.
Did not have the pleasure of playing out of any bunkers most of which looked to be well maintained and recently groomed.
Greens were well watered generally soft and receptive rolling at about medium speed with some occasional bumpiness but overall of good quality.
Layout is true to its name some nice elevated tee boxes and many up hill approaches as well as stances that have some slope involved. Scenic parkland setting winding through the hills and dales. POP 340 with occassional waiting on the back 9.

Played midweek, and overall not impressed. Condition was mostly OK, with some maintenance going on like a couple heavily aerated fairways with plugs all over. Greens were inconsistent, with some rolling medium speed, a couple slow and shaggy, and some medium-quick.

Pace of play was HORRIBLE, at 5h20m during a midweek round. There were 3 foursomes waiting on the 6th tee. We inquired about the pace issue to one of the player assistants driving around and all he said was “yeah, really slow” with zero interest in trying to address it.

The layout is just weird and frankly not very enjoyable. It is clearly shoehorned into a piece of land that didn’t lend itself to good design, and it shows. Between the layout and pace, this is an easy course to avoid.

I last played AH about 3 months and said then that I would not likely play for some time. So I lied! My son in law and his brother, took me out to play here on Father’s day. The guys in the clubhouse and the starter are great and made for a nice start. The starter on the #1 tee had things well organized for a what was going to be a super busy day and we went off on time at 7:20. The course is in nice shape right now and one could not complain about the conditions. Agree with the last 2 reviews. Fairways are lush and green. Didn’t have a bad lie. The rough was also lush and cut down just right. Bunkers are also in very good condition. The greens are rolling good for the most part but bumpy on certain areas. You can see the whiteish flower beginning to grow on the poa annua and although a little bumpy, I still give them a good rating. The layout is not one of my favs. It is not a long course but you cannot be spraying the driver on many holes. We finished in a little more than 4.5 hours. Could have been faster but waited on just about every hole and the group behind us fell way back, two holes behind. That’s the knock on this course, pace of play. Some of the fairways are narrow and trees come into play not to mention guys spending time looking for lost balls. It is what it is and unless you can get out real early, don’t expect a fast round.

5 /20 using underpar $66 2some on a pleasant somewhat breezy am. Had 1000 tee time but Don the jovial starter gave us the option of an early start so off at 920 joined by Linda a very enjoyable playing partner who even though she reported only playing for 2 1/2 years exhibited good athletic ability and a high golf IQ being very familiar with etiquette and overall awareness. The course itself was in overall good condition, fairways quite lush, more on the soft side so limited roll but excellent lies. #9 has some mixed grasses so the potential exists for clumps to be a factor. A few unfilled divots here and there but not bad. Rough mostly on the shorter side but with some areas very penal. Tees pretty much level with some a little thin but playable. Bunkers varied from full with nice compacted sand to thin coverage. Greens are very healthy, on the soft side, smooth but having some grain to factor in rolling at medium speed. Topography has a great deal of influence on this course. Greens are most often fronted by swales of various sizes and with the kikouyu shots hit short stay short. Today no sequence on flag placement and all flags are the same color. GPS does give yardage to pin as well as front and back yardage. The layout is "interesting" with many doglegs and some blind landing areas and multiple elevation changes. POP about 415 with some waiting. Staff is friendly and easy going.

Surprised me when I looked and saw that I had not played here since 2009, so was excited to return. Despite a threatening weather forecast, we had a 6am tee time and played a very easy paced round of 2 hours 45 minutes, and were able to beat the drizzle which was just starting as we placed the clubs back into the trunk. Staff and starter were very friendly and accommodating. Not at all crowded, so very easy to get out first this morning and with nobody in front or behind us, a very relaxed round. Greens are fully recovered from the recent punching, but while they rolled well, they were very slow. Too slow for my taste. Fairways were lush, bunkers well maintained, with plenty of sand. Most of the tee boxes were fine, a few with some divot damage. I really enjoyed playing the course, more than I expected. Played the blues and generally even for this senior, very playable. (Only #3 & #9 presented a challenge more than my game allows) Still not crazy about hole #12 for several reasons, but that's the only hole I really do not care for. Nice conditions, pleasant views, scenic, all & all, a positive experience. A little on the pricey side but not too bad. When I first started playing here, I always walked the course. I don't even know if they would allow walking now, but now I must admit I appreciated having the cart. Oh to be young again !

Played with a high school buddy on Monday 4/8/19 using an UnderPar certificate, $33 each at 1pm, which is a decent deal. The course had punched greens 2 weeks ago – the practice green showed a lot of sand-filled holes but was cut tight and wicked fast. On-course greens were found to be a little slower and the punching marks were much less obvious, but it took us a few holes to dial back our terror and start getting the ball to the hole. Some fairway areas, mainly leading up to greens, have been punched in the past few day – the holes are empty and the punch cores are laying out on the turf. Not my favorite type of course with the wall-to-wall kikuyu, but overall conditions were OK. Tees were level – we played the white plates, as all the white markers were moved up. I wasn’t in any sand. Fairway lies were generally good but some holes were fairly wet, others very dry. Rough could be cut short or juicy and damp. Greens are small and the overall slope of the property toward the Santa Ana River prevails. Lots of red stakes around if you stray from the line of play. Most holes are pretty steeply uphill or downhill – “flat” areas are frequently significantly sloped along the prevailing hillside gradient. Carts with a nice interactive GPS, and a yardage book is available. Many holes have some distance stakes in use. We played as a twosome ahead of a threesome in a little less than 4 hours. Two-level range on mats hitting down into a hollow. Friendly service in the shop and the snack bar. OK for a casual round.

Played AH today with our neighborhood group on a very nice but windy day. Never played here before and didn’t know what to expect. Asked the starter for a little help on how to play it and he said there were many blind shots. He was right. Some quirky holes out there. Noticed it had been a couple of weeks since they aerated so I wasn’t expecting the best. POP was just under 4 hours which was good considering we did spend some time looking for lost shots.

The fairways have been recently aerated and in fact, some were being aerated on this day. Large holes with the residue clumps of dirt on the fairways so unable to give a good review on the fairways. The tee boxes were in great condition. They just need to cut it down a bit but they were green and lush. The rough was not real thick and playable. Bunkers were in good shape with good firm sand.

The greens were not too bad considering it has been 2 weeks since aeration. They were just slow but still rolled ok. I am told they are usually pretty fast but I would not expect to see them in good condition for a couple more weeks.

Not a real fan of the layout. Many blind shots with many elevation changes and having some course knowledge certainly would have helped. The GPS did help out with the layout of the holes. The par 3’s however are very cool and challenging with the elevation changes. Won’t be in a hurry to get back out here soon but would like to give it another try now that I know where to hit it.

Unable to play my second round at Tijeras Creek and stuck in Orange County we decided to head up to Anaheim Hills and play for $20. I really wrestled with this decision, sit in traffic for two and a half hours, or golf...... This was my third time playing here. The first two times I hadn’t played a lot of courses and had come out of golf retirement so I had nothing to compare it to. They have GPS in the carts which is great. Not sure how they can have it, but Tijeras can’t? I’m not a big fan of this layout. There are many doglegs, hilly lies and blind shots. The greens are the smallest I’ve ever played. Tee boxes, fairways, rough average. The traps were above average and the greens are above average as well. It does have some nice views and it is a very good municipal course. Customer service is excellent. Their burgers are great, but we decided on Tijeras burgers and I’m really disappointed in myself for that. The rack rate is $61 on Fridays, less for members. I personally think that’s too much. Especially if you are near Ventura County courses. I know there’s a theme to my ratings today. I recommend it if you can get a deal. I’ll wait six months for my next 50 percent off. Underpar has a deal on it now and if you play both rounds it’s worth it. The Proshop will get you out too.
