Uncle Jimmy and I decided to play 'squirrel hallow', Friday afternoon. We were paired up with KeKe and Carrie from out of town, and had a great time. It was good for us to be paired with some real classy ladies, and this allowed us to be real gentlemen on the course... for a change. Our game and scores, did not suffer at all ;-).
POP was a comfortable 4 hours, even though we were all finding different cuts of rough and traps, often. Three gentlemen behind us, I think I only saw them ready and waiting on us about 5 times that round, otherwise we had nice spacing and pace.
'Squirrel Hallow' has 5 par 5's, and 5 par 3's, these extras are wonderful to look forward to in a round. This place averages +10 critters per hole. They stay clear of the greens, but they are active and full of energy everywhere else. They even run out and inspect your ball on fairways, like they are going to take it! They must want nicer balls, cause they left mine alone, once they saw they were cheap Wilson's.

A word to ACC, like countless other courses, please be accountable; improve the condition and cosistency of your traps.

Went out today and played Arrowhead CC. I was looking for a place that looked pretty wide open for a Sunday morning where I could play by myself and get some practice in. Looked on GolfNow and it looked like the course was pretty open. Once I arrived, I was able to go out as a single and had a fairly large gap to the groups in front of me. It was perfect.

This is an old school golf course. The fairways are pretty narrow and tree lined throughout the course. Most of the holes are parallel to each other with the tee boxes and greens VERY close to one another. If you are offline a bit of your approach shots, you could be doing a lot of yelling during your round. If you like old school golf courses, this is definitely the place for you. The course was a fully private golf course up until a few years ago.

The course was in pretty good shape for the amount of heat that we have been having. The fairways were in good shape - very payable. The rough had a few bare spot but nothing extreme. The tee boxes were probably the roughest part of the course. Some were pretty uneven and patchy but nothing you couldn't work around. The tee boxes are almost 100 years old so, when you think about it like that, they are in very good shape :)

The greens here can be tricky, especially if you have not played here before. Most are sloped pretty severely from back to front. A lot of them had large humps and bumps in them that can make putts difficult. All of the greens rolled well and had pretty minimal ball mark damage.

All in all, a good day of golf. I would recommend this course to anyone that likes those tree lined type golf courses. It is not really my favorite style of golf course but I still had a lot of fun playing. Nothing to complain about!

Headed out to Arrowheadcc to celebrate our nation's Independence by playing a round of golf, lol. Figured the course would be busy and was right. Tee time was for 9:02 with a walking rate of $39, which I didn't realize at the time of paying, was going to be a pretty good deal.
Started off with a small bucket to hit off a mat only driving range that is parallel to the 13th fairway, which they encourage you not to use driver or long irons when players are out there. Kinda surprising to have mat only range at a formerly private club, imo. Putting and chipping area not huge or spectacular but ample enough for about 10 to practice comfortably. Practice greens very good representation of on course greens.
The blue tee boxes that my playing partners JD and I played from, as usual had good coverage and were for the most part pretty flat. There were one or two that were slightly unlevel one direction or the other. Because the par threes are pretty long (shortest being about 170), most are using long irons off tees or fairway woods which lead to fewer divots, I'm guessing.
Fairway reconstruction is complete and very lush, back to the way I remember when they first opened to the public some time ago. Fairways haven't been this nice since then, very impressed.
The rough on the course is mostly lush with some dried out brown spots in places that are the result of miss hits, ie a few yards off the tee, deep into the trees, etc.
The greens on this course are obviously a priority over other areas, but they too have seen improvement. Didn't really notice any diseased or damaged spots that had plagued them in the past few months, and were much more receptive to approach shots than in the past. They were also softer than I can ever remember them being in the recent past. Imo, they've finally got it right with greens rolling about an 11/11.5 on the stimp, like usual, but soft enough to hold long approach shots. In the past, they were fast and hard, making it difficult to keep balls from hitting the green and not rolling off. Be prepared to not have many straight putts if you're not within 2 feet, lol.
The only gripe I had was with the bunkers. Best way I could describe them would be as 'soft dirt'. I know they are hazards, meant to be penal, but there were probably about 3 shots that maybe would have played different had there been actual sand in those bunkers. Easier to play out of when moist early in the day, than when they dry out around 11. Kinda frustrating when you're trying to save par and you know you can't get under the ball smoothly.
All things considered, including pace of play, a very enjoyable round with conditions at a level I thought they would never return to after opening to the public. A challenging walkable course with narrow fairways on many holes with greens that will test the skills of even the best putters.
Highly recommended at this time.

or maybe el prado. tee boxes fair to poor, fairways are just horrible, the only saving grace are the greens quick with slope and bent grass albeit a little shaggy. this course should be on your to do list at some point. if you do go be sure to visit the mens locker/restroom and turn your mind back 50 years.

Played yesterday in a Church league. Tee boxes are fair, fairways are in terrible shape. Fairways are infested with dry spots, lumps of grass and dry spots throughout the Course. Greens are in good shape once you reach the green and the bunkers are in great shape with plenty of sand. Please note that this Course is preparing for "Aerafication". Played out here today, Saturday 11/25, on an 11:50 GolfNow "Hot Deal" for $32. There were lots of times available on GolfNow, so despite a traditionally busy golf weekend, I thought this "under-the-radar" course might be less busy than others. Wrong. It was super busy and play was slow. I was sent out by myself between a bunch of foursomes (I guess the other 3 who bought at 11:50 never showed up) and the front nine took about 2:30. Then on the approach to the 11th, the group ahead of me waved me up and said they wanted to let me through all day but there was nowhere to go, but now several groups in front of them had bailed. I played the next few holes very quickly but then caught people again. Back nine pace was 1:30 for a total of just over 4 hours. Unseasonably warm and sunny, little wind, but fortunately there are lots of big trees out there to provide shade.

Course conditions are pretty good with some "good, but..." thrown in. Greens roll fast and smooth except they seemed prone to spike marks, which made them a little bumpy if you hit one. Full shots stopped quickly but short game shots were difficult to control on the speedy greens. Fairways had good coverage of light green/tan grass, but it was dry and seemed to disintegrate when a club came in contact with it. Still mostly provided good lies. Rough was the same as the fairways, just a little longer and with some sketchier thin spots. Kudos to the course, however, because they seem to put the emphasis on maintaining the grass around the green complexes, which was much greener and lusher than the rest of the fairways or rough. Bunkers were good. Tee boxes were nice lush grass but a little bit long...maybe not mown for a couple days.

This was my first time here. It's an old-school course surrounded by an old-school neighborhood. Typically I associate private courses (this was private until recently) with having more character than your typical muni-type course, but that perception doesn't really fit here. This is a pretty straightforward layout, very flat and not all that interesting. That's not to say it's bad. It's just a little boring. I don't necessarily feel a strong desire to return, but I wouldn't turn it down, either. There are a few water hazards that are hidden due to being elevated a bit, one of which I totally missed noticing the yellow stakes and hit my approach shot right into it.

Played Thursday, went out as a single. Quick warmup on the range (mats, not grass), then started on the 10th due to a ladies event on the front nine.

When I called to set up my tee time, nobody mentioned they had punched/sanded greens and were overseeding the tees. While the greens actually rolled better/faster than expected, ALL the tees were set up in front of the red plates - sometimes as much as 20 yards shorter. Had I known that I would probably have waited another week or two.

The remainder of the course was in quite good condition (except the bunkers, more on those below). It's pretty flat but has some artificial contours in fairways and around greens, need to be fairly accurate due to trees lining every hole. Greens are on the smallish size, with a couple exceptions, and several have ridges/multiple tiers/small tucked away sections that can make life miserable if you're in the wrong place. Fairways had very good coverage and the rough has been recently overseeded, varying from "not bad" to "Where'd my ball go?!?!?" .

As for the bunkers - they are definitely the weakest part of the course. All had very heavy/wet sand and several had standing water in the low areas.

Pace of play was excellent, caught and passed a twosome after about 4 holes, then another several holes later - finished in 3 hours even. Would have been a little quicker but actually caught up to the last of the women's group on the approach to #7 (my #16).

My Group Golfer voucher was for $30 and given the green conditions and tee locations, that should have been even lower. Give it 2-3 weeks and that would be a great value and would be a good deal even at a significantly higher price.

Check-in was smooth and easy. using Underpar deal for $40 per person. We headed to the driving range and hit some balls while we waited to be called. Place was full but the members kept a good pace and we did not have to wait on any hole. Finish under 4 hours for our 4some.

Conditions on the course was good. Good coverage on fairways. Greens were a bit slower. Lots of shuttle breaks and hard to pinpoint most of them. Bunkers well stocked and easy to get out.

Halfway house was closed but they did leave a water jug and restrooms available to use. I think they were understaffed and probably cut back on personnel so there was no marshalls nor beverage cart either.

Course had some interesting holes. Pretty easy to walk as a few members were seen walking but with the heat, we welcomed the carts. No GPS on the carts but they have yardage markers along the fairway.

Fun course and will try to return in cooler weather.

Played arrowhead cc Sunday afternoon, teed off as a single at approx 4:15 for about a 3 hour round. Would have been much shorter round, but had a twosome directly ahead whom were playing at a very good clip which allowed me to take my time and hit a duplicate shot every so often. Pace of play has been very good each time I've played here.
This course is pretty flat and plays more difficult than it appears. Couple that with a rack rate of $85, $55 at twilight and you get a course that typically has a lower volume of players. I'm sure there is a correlation there in regards to the lush seemingly divotless tee boxes, minus the par threes, of course. While the par three tee boxes had plenty divots, it was fairly easy to find a spot to play from.
Fairways are also very lush, with great coverage. Second to greens, which I'll get to next, fairways are of utmost importance to me in a golf course's conditioning. Within several fairways there are subtle and not so subtle mounds and/or depressions that affect your lie and stance that add to the difficulty of this course. In my humble opinion, the only way they could be improved is if they were mowed a little tighter to produce a bit more roll out on drives.
The greens are, in my opinion, the highlight of the course. Here is where a great deal of that 131 slope rating comes into play! You would be hard pressed to have a straight nonbreak putt over 5 feet the entire round. For a course as flat as this one, the undulations are on some holes are quite challenging. The fact that arrowhead cc is probably less than a mile from the base of the mountains, Crestline community, will have you trying to figure whether you're putt is flat or actually slightly downhill. Landing short of the pin is usually the smart play, putting downhill with the grain will lead to some wide eyes and open mouths, lol.
Bunkers are really nothing to write home about. Not great, but not terrible either. Very playable in my opinion, just not fluffy white sand like I prefer.
Rough can be pretty penal, mostly because if you find yourself in it, you will undoubtedly have to navigate thru a tree or two or three, lol. Balls easily found, but may need an extra club or two provided you have an angle to the green.
In all, a great course to play. I personally appreciate the difficulty, coupled with the ease of walking. Very diligent with providing and insisting upon the use of divot filling bottles for walkers. Btw, water fountains all over the course, some in unexpected locations between holes and adjacent fairways. Also, brand new signs and ball washers, lol. Quickly becoming one of my favorite places to play.
