Met up with Sal (sbarajas) at Coronado on Monday, 5/10/21 for a GK Cup match at 1230. Had a few hiccups getting there as I tried to turn to the course off 4th Street, but the turn is blind and it’s the last exit before the return trip over the bridge …….. so I made an extra circuit over and back before I could make it to the parking lot. And almost missed it the second time! A very blind turn with no markings/warnings – local knowledge needed!

Pretty pricey for a muni ($71 to ride) but conditions were pretty good and it’s GKers, including legend rat-patrol and the reclusive, diminutive, but long-hitting jpeairs85. We started on time and played in about 4 hours. I was lulled into thinking there might not be too much wind during a calm first few holes, but as we turned to number 5 the wind was in our face and steady for the rest of the round.

Jim and Sal have already described the conditions well. This was my first time here and I’d seen earlier reviews, so it was pretty much as expected. Greens were in good shape, pretty firm and rolling at medium+ speed. Fairway lies were good and rough was pretty short. One fairway bunker I was in was fine to play from. Two greenside bunkers were crusty from watering and thin over a firm base – rakes were available, but we would have benefitted from a lift/smooth/place approach on these conditions.

Overall this is a solid play that is tough for me (even from Whites) with long approaches to greens into the wind. I drove it pretty straight but had trouble getting on the greens. [What happened after I DID get on – CENSORED!]

Thanks to Sal for setting this up. Overall recommended.

Played here yesterday (5/10) with Rat, Jon and DConn for GK Cup match on a wonderful San Diego late spring day (overcast at first, sun peeking out later). First time playing this course (amazingly) and walked away impressed as it another great San Diego muni. Jim really covered all the bases so, for the sake of not beating a dead horse, I will just give my impressions.

Property sits on pricey and beautiful real estate; flanked at every hole by some of the most beautiful homes in So. Cal. Layout is typical muni but fair. Conditions were better than most municipal courses (that aren't Torrey) as Rat alluded to. Nice big parking lot, though if you follow your navigation system, you have to be on your toes for street names. Property seems to have everything you may need. Carts even have GPS which you don't often see in "lower level" courses. Coronado prices and with golf booming again during COVID, be prepared to pay a premium to play in the home of old money. Highly recommend.

No padding in the cups or any other Covid contraption, but a sign in the pro shop said to not pull any pins. There were rakes in the bunkers which was a first in California for me since the epidemic started.
Tees: level mostly decent
Fairways: mostly covered with good lies running out some
Rough: none really
Greens: mostly smooth running a bit slow except the downhill down grain puts that could get away from you. Some of the green surrounds had patches and splices and inlaid sod of what looked like differing grass varieties?
POP: good at just over 4 hours
Customer service: good all around, bathrooms on front and back 9’s. Snack bar by clubhouse and a place to sit down and have a snack and a good drink.
Views are nice, course is flat and walkable. Recommended, IF, and that’s a big IF, you can secure a tee time on course that was always full and even more so now.

Played here yesterday with a 2:00 time I nabbed on their website the day before. I had once again been checking sites of several different courses rather obsessively and finally what must’ve been a cancellation popped up and I jumped on it. I booked for $43 with cart, but at check-in they gave me the option to walk for $31. Because I already planned on riding, I opted to ride but nice to know that rate on their site is the high end of what you’ll pay. I originally planned to eat lunch somewhere on Coronado, but the island was so busy with people I decided to just eat at the course’s snack bar instead. The restaurant was very busy with a big lunch crowd, too. Checked in around 1:20, was given my choice of carts and was called to the first tee a few minutes before 2:00. Played with a couple guys from inland SD county and another guy who lives on Coronado. We waited quite a bit but pace wasn’t too bad for a weekend afternoon on a muni. Probably about 4:45 total. Absolutely gorgeous day (warm, too!) with about a one- to two-club (seemingly swirling) breeze pretty consistently throughout the round.

Course is in really nice condition. Greens are mostly smooth, medium-fast, and about medium firmness. Most of my shots took a bounce before stopping. Fairways had pretty good coverage and were well maintained. The rough was a little spottier and clumpier but still pretty good. Not very deep nor penal. Blue tee boxes were mostly good but a few were heavily sanded – the par-3 5th comes to mind. I think I was only in one bunker but got plenty of experience in it (read the March “What’d you shoot” for all the gory details). It had plentiful, rather heavy sand in it.

I was surprised to find a city-run course with so few Covid regulations in place. There was a sign not to touch the flagsticks, but otherwise there were rakes around bunkers, sand bottles on the cart, and nothing in the cup to prevent the ball from falling to the bottom. Face masks required indoors when checking in. Beverage cart came around several times. No ball washers at tee boxes.

I had only played here once before, many many years ago. 1989, I think. The course is even better than I remembered. I didn’t remember so many back nine holes playing along the edge of the water. Hope it’s not another 30+ years before I return. With demand so high, I guess I understand their tee time policy, but I don’t like it. The only way to book more than 2 days in advance is to pay an absurd $17 booking fee. Seems like a pure cash grab to me. Even the Coronado resident I played with said he hadn’t played there for six months because it’s so difficult to get a time unless you pay that fee.

Played on Sunday under sunny conditions. Course is really fun and is protected by the wind. Greens were in great shape but really firm. Made a big difference coming out of the rough and hitting from the fairway. Everything in good to great shape and is worth the waits and green fees.

Decided to walk on at the last minute and put my name in at about 6:30 and teed off at 7:30 so the wait wasn't bad at all.

Decided to walk on at the last minute and put my name in at about 6:30 and teed off at 7:30 so the wait wasn't bad at all.

Greens were a little bumpy and seemed a little slower than normal to me. A few unrepaired ball marks here and there. Greens held shots well however I could not adjust to the speed. I carried chips to release and they'd check or try and get something back to the hole and it would run out. Just never got that dialed in.

Bunkers need to be raked. I was in 3 and 2 I had to move since they were in footprints. Some looked like they hadn't been touched in a few days.

Rough was non-existant. No penalty for being in there. The rough is really just navigating trees.

Fairways are ok as well. I did find a divot and I usually expect to find one when playing here given the amount of play this course gets.

Tee boxes are ok as well. Par 3 boxes are a little more beaten up and the number 9 tee box (on the right hand side) was a little unlevel.

One of the guys in our group said the greens were being punched in a couple of week but I forgot to confirm that with the course. I'd probably hold off on playing until after the maintenance but then again it's only $49 to walk so that is hard to beat.

12/26/20 Played Coronado in San Diego day after Christmas in prime conditions Sunny and warm. Coronado is one of the best courses in San Diego it still remains one of the best values anywhere. The course conditions are excellent for a municipal course that gets non-stop play. The greens were in great shape and the fairways were generally very lush. Some of the tee boxes (particularly on the par 3s) had problems (lots of divots--a bit uneven), but overall, this is a fun course with great views.

Nothing to add to my previous reviews as far as conditions go, still the same from the last two weeks. Customer service from the starter is still fantastic!! Keep up the good work and get out there if you can, always a great day at Nado.

I was able to get out as a walk on single again on Saturday, 1/9. I showed up around 10:15am and was off by 10:50. So happy they were able to work me in. I love Dennis in the starter booth. Such a great attitude and all around good guy. Most everyone I've encountered in the starter booth is great. $43 to walk is well worth it.

Conditions were about the same as last week, although the fairways seemed a little nicer. The greens were still very difficult to read. They were playing fast and had a few bumps here and there, but they were very receptive to shots and I can't complain. I just can't putt!!

Teeboxes were level and had some divot damage, but for the most part, nothing to cry about. Sand Traps were still hit and miss. I played out of the one that I was in on number 5, but for the most part, they were still loaded with footprints. So play it GUR or whatever you'd think is fair.

Saw the beverage cart a few times and she was great. Service is always nice here. POP has been great lately. POP at 4.25hrs, which is great for this course. Usual wait for the first 5 holes and then it seems to really open up. Get on out there if you can!!!
