Played in the GK outing on 2/24/09. What I remember are those greens & fringes. I putted a few times from at least 40 yards out. Take your approach shots a club less and it will not stop on the green and roll right through it. Many ESA's to lose balls in and if you get in the tall rough, just aim to get out to the fairway, as it is tough to get longer irons to hit well from there. Bunkers don't have great sand in the ones I was in. Tee boxes and fairways were great.
The diner there is decent, not great food, but not bad. Can get a small discount if you ask if you are getting multiple items.
Had a great time and I'd be back if it wasn't so dang far from me.

The greens were quick and firm, especially considering last weeks rains. The fairways and tee boxes are really lush. I was suprised at the amount of roll on many of the fairways, almost playing like summer conditions on a day that had little wind and temps in the low 70's. You definitely need to play short of the hole, because the ball is going to release and you don't want a downhill putt.

Played on Tuesday, 2/10. Showed up at 7:30 only to find out they had frost on the greens. Living in Orange County I am not accustomed to thinking about frost. The started began teeing groups off at 8:30 and did an excellent job of getting people paired up. He even took me outside to show me who I was playing and riding with. Great customer service.

The greens are in good shape. They roll well with medium speed. The greens are the trick to playing this course well. They undulate all over the place and the fringe, which is mowed tight enough to put on, can be 30 feet wide. If you like to hit punch and run shots this is the course.

The fairways are in good shape for winter time. They are fairly wide off the tee. Although, there are a few holes you might want to leave the driver in the bag. The rest of the course is in good shape.

For me this is the type of course I would enjoy the more I play it. I wish it was not a 65 mile drive through LA
or I would play it regularly.

Walked on as a single this afternoon (2/11) for twilight.......starter was real cool about letting me go out on front 9 first with a threesome as they were jammed and teeing everyone off on the back 9 first this afternoon. Course looked just as good as last time I played it....was in the sand quite a bit today (4 times) and the quality of sand seemed better this time around. Greens a tad slower than last week but still rolling pretty quick and true and you want to stay below the hole....little to no ball marks... Tee boxes are almost all level and are in fairly good shape. The fairways are nice and green at Rustic and I think the rains helped them grow out a little more...still get some nice roll on your drives here, some spots the fairways are thinner(hole 7 comes to mind)....did not see a cart girl today. Greens here are huge and they had some pin's set in the back today which gave us some practice on our putting game.....what a deal during the week...can't beat it for what you get.

Played twilight this afternoon 2/2.......our foursome was cracking up at the weather conditions out there today...20-30 mph winds and gusts that would not let up(toughest conditions I have seen at Rustic). Greens were super quick and were in GREAT shape...little to no ball marks or divot damage...rolling perfect....tee boxes were level and were in good shape...fairways were in good shape...some spots where you have tighter lies(probably the fairways are a little dry here due to the windy conditions but still in very nice shape)...the bunkers are a little thin and should be categorized more as waste bunkers than sand bunkers....Rustic has a great layout, great staff inside the pro-shop and you can't beat the price for what you get.

Played this course for the very first time yesterday as a preview for our upcoming outing in February. What a challenging and fun course! Course is in excellent condition. To me, this is what a public golf course should look like. Generally lots of short grass around the greens means you can use your putter from great distance. What the par 3's lack in distance, they more than make up for in undulations in the greens.

Still trying to figure out how I can make a double bogey 5 on the 138 yard par 3 15th, then make a tap in par on the 466 yard par 4 16th. Yep, 466 yard par 4 from the blues.

Winds were so strong when we got there that they had temporarily closed the back nine and had players re-playing the front to get in their 18, but by the time we teed off they had opened the back up.

On this layout, there is a huge difference between the blue and white tees on 5 holes. Hole #14 is a 446 yard dogleg from the blues, but only a 364 yard straight hole from the whites, but the biggest difference is the par three hole #6 - 200 yards from the blue, but only 128 yards from the white.

It was a very nice preview of what is to come on 2/24 at the GK Outing. The weather was perfect when I left my home and when I arrived at the course I was welcomed to a very strong breeze. Went to the clubhouse and talked to the starter, he advised if I could to not play today due to the severe winds. (He was looking out for my mental game) - but if you just have to torture yourself then this is what to do.

He began to explain some of the things to be aware of so that I would be able to get around the course. Man that guy was really cool.

The course looked surpreme for hole one and was in GREAT shape. The tee boxes were lush and posed some interesting shots. It is two different course from the white to the blue, people always say there is little difference from the whites to the blues but on this course it is two different courses.

The fairways are in excellent condition. The rolled very true to their slopes. Bunkers we indeed in play on a lot of holes, but could have used a little more sand.

The greens were fast and firm. FYI the green on the first hole will fool you because it is not as fast as the rest???? Dont ask me why but, the greens seemed to get faster as the round went on. The false fronts can fool you when going for the green, but this inks style course allows you to putt from 100 yards and in so you can take advantage with the flat stick. Just like the British Open?????

For all of you that are playing in the 2/24 event. Be prepared for the different courses. If there is no wind scoring will be at a premium, however if the wind was anything like Thursday, scoring will be on good shots only.

Although this a challenging course it is VERY fun to play. You will definitely enjoy yourself, and not pay a lot to have fun.

Played on 1-7-09. Course in good shape for this time of year. Greens were more than tricky. Extremely difficult to read and extremely quick...everything breaks hard north to south. Fairways overly generous in width but closely cropped chipping areas and undulating greens more than compensate for the feeling of hitting it on a driving range.
Value for the experience: 2nd best in Ventura county, just behind Soule Park, which also was redesigned by Gil Hanse. Helps to play with someone who knows the course.
