Our second round of our recent Mesquite golf trip was to Coyote Springs. We played this course on our last trip to Mesquite and we all agreed that we needed to add it to the rotation again since we all enjoyed it so much. To be honest, this is the course I was most looking forward to playing on the entire trip. I enjoyed it that much.

This course is literally in the middle of nowhere. It is about a 50 minute drive from Mesquite. There is nothing around this course for as far as you can see. It is actually quite sad to be honest. They must have had huge plans for this place a few years ago. There are house pads graded everywhere around the course. You can see areas where it was going to obviously be a grand entrance to a private gated community. The rumor is that there was supposed to be some 6,000 homes and two courses at this place and there is not one single home to be seen and only one course. It is crazy. Someone really lost their shorts here! It's hard not to feel for them.

The weather was by far the worst I have every played in. It was in the mid to high 30s and it rained the entire day. I packed a ton of layers of clothes in my bag but I didn't think to put the clothes in plastic bags. The rain soaked my bag and everything in it. I had no dry clothes to put on through the round so I just had to be wet and freezing. I actually stopped playing after 9 holes because I could not stop shaking and my fingers were starting to tingle. I am definitely a fair weather golfer. This was a struggle for me.

The weather was obviously not the fault of the course. The marshal actually come by on about hole 8 and just looked at us, shook his head, and laughed.

The course was not in the same shape that I remembered it a few years ago but it was also a different time of the year - November last time, March this time. I remember the greenest fairways and the nicest course conditions I have ever played last time. This time was not the case. I could have had my expectations too high or the terrible weather could have had me down - I don't know. It just was not what I expected.

The course had the winter look to it. Brownish dormant fairways and rough. It is conditions I would expect for a course that did not overseed. I am not sure if they did or not, but it had that feel. This was the most expensive round of golf on our entire trip ($160) and it was definitely in the worst condition. It was very playable but just not what I had expected. Again, I may have had too high of expectations or it could have been the weather but I just felt like it was not really worth the green fee at the moment. My opinion.

As for the course, the layout is absolutely awesome. It is one of my favorites. The greens are typical Nicklaus greens. Not one section of the green is flat and it looks like they buried cars under each of them. They would be brutal is they were rocket fast.

This course is definitely worth the drive from Mesquite just not the very high green fees. I think when the weather gets a little warmer, the course will be in awesome shape. It was playable but it did not have that wow factor like I remember from last time. Give it a little time and think it will be back to glory.

Hands down, our favorite golf course was Coyote Springs, it was agreed upon by all four of us.

This course was absolutely beautiful, from tee to green, just about perfect in so many ways. Depending on which tees you play, you are going to get a very good challenge. I loved how the ball sat up on the fairway like you were teeing it up.

BTW, this has one of the best practice facilities I've ever seen, just short of Orange County National in Orlando, but not by much. Because it's in the middle of nowhere (and I'm not kidding), they could build their practice facility as big as they wanted and they tried. lol

Start of trip to Utah arrived at Coyote Springs 10:30 am Sunday 11th with 89 degree temp. Quick checkin by Doug very personable gave me early twilight rate and offered tips to a course I'd be playing later on this trip. Went to stretch and warm up on huge all grass range rolled a few on practice green same smooth 10 stimp as course. Lots of grass hoppers too. Entire course was immaculate tees to green only saw another single let play through as I used yardage book and planned every shot taking my time on this very enjoyable course. In a couple white sand bunkers nice to play out of as was manageable rough which added an extra club to distance. Plenty of water available in tunnel crossings, beverage cart running, wet towels and desert trees shading cart path parking areas kept rising heat bearable. Course ops looked to be winding down upon my return to car at 2:30 in light breeze with 98 temp. Would love to play here again and highly recommend it.

I played Coyote Springs on Wednesday the 13th of March. We were the second group out at 8:20am because the wind was extream. Winds were 25-35mph gusting to 45 and there were few who dared to brave them. The staff here is amazing. We are always greeted by a smiling face in the parking lot and the pro shop. Usually the starter is Tony at hole number one and his humor is unmatched. My group and I are clark county residents and owners of the coyote club card. This is a great deal with local rates and allows us to bring out of town guests at our rate four times a year. This is smart marketing as it entices us to make the drive to the remote location. The course despite the wind was in great shape from tee to green. This is desert golf with wide fairways and receptive greens. The desert is not so thick that you can’t find your wayward drives. As we are entering the spring high season he in southern NV, the course is ready. The practice green adjacent to the first hole is large and consistant with the greens on the course. The greens were rolling fast and with the wind condition the greens were firm and dificult to keep your ball from rolling away from you after being marked. The tee boxes were well maintained and beautiful. They were level with little divot damage. The rough was cut short and hard to distinguish from the fairway. Little or no impact for missing the fairway, unless you went into the desert. The fairways were fantastic and very healthy and lush. A pleasure to hit from. As I mentioned before the greens were firm and fast. The greens here are big and have a lot of undulation. We had many three plus putts because of the wind as you had to factor the effect of the wind on your putt. But the condition of the greens were excellent. Little to no divot damage and even though the wind was taking its toll on them, they would still hold a approach shot. The bunkers here are like many in the SW USA, sunbaked, and difficult. But the amount of sand was sufficient so they were not hard pan, that you find on many courses. You could get your club under the ball and the sand was of very good quality. They were well maintained as well. The beverage cart was out and came around often. It was a hot chocolate kind of day and it did not disappoint. The temps were about 55, but the windchill was around 35-40. I really love this course and that is the reason we decided to play in the extream conditions. If you are in doubt about making the drive out to this remote location, take me word for it, you will not be disappointed. They will do a full course aeration on May 8th-9th and then they enter their summer rates and it is a true bargin to play an excellent course.

Feeling a little conflicted as I sit here and write this one....for a couple reasons. (1) this is one of my favorite courses, (2) we have not experienced anything like what we got this year and (3) we usually play this every other year but played 2 years in a row because of other local aerification activities on-going.

First let me say that when my cousin and I play by ourselves, we play in about 2.5 hours if we don't have to wait for anyone else (in our group or in front of us). We were first off on 07/02, and told that we'd be able to go right at our tee time so that the maintenance guys could get their work in - no problem with that that mentality. Here is why I'm conflicted:

Playing right along had no issues until hole 11. We pulled up to the green with the sprinklers going right off the green (no problem here), when putting, we looked over and saw that the sprinkler had rotated and was going directly on our cart, soaking all of our stuff. My cousin ran up and hopped in and reversed the cart and a wall of water shot off the front. Next hole (par 3) we teed off and proceeded to drive up - sprinklers were going off ON THE GREEN while we were on it. My cousin asked one of the maintenance guys to turn them off and he barely acknowledged him. Apparently the maintenance guys are supposed to radio ahead so the other team of guys can turn the sprinklers off when golfers are coming, but that didn't happen. Get to the next hole - more sprinklers, and the marshall comes up. My cousin made some comment to him (I wasn't there so I didn't hear it first hand), but by the time I got there I heard the marshall say "probably feels good if its 110 out" - which would be true, but for the fact that it was around 0800 in the morning, and not 110 degrees. Get through with the round and go to inquire about playing again and tell Karl, and it was clear he wasn't listening...just said "yea, yep" when I told him that we skipped a few holes because of the sprinklers. Was a little surprised at that response given that we've always experienced first class service here - and I even mentioned to him that I was bummed I couldn't make the Greenskeeper outing there a few weeks before.

Anyways - about the course - greens were a little shaggy but rolled true. Got WAYYYY faster the 2nd round (after they dried out from the sprinklers). Rough and fairways were nice and clean...no complaints there, or ever at this course. Boxes were a little rough and hard to find flat spots on a couple but certainly doable (probably didn't help that we were playing from the blacks either). Highly recommend this course generally and I'm sure nothing there will change. Look forward to coming back in a few years, but definitely need a year off after this year.

This is my 2nd favorite course and try to get out here twice a year, but this was the 1st time back in almost a year. I absolutely love this course. Basically, wide open, every hole separated from the others, and no 2 holes alike. I know it'll change once houses are finally built, but until then, I will enjoy the solitary feeling the course provides.

Course was in good condition. Nice tee boxes. Fairways were firm but not thin. Rough was consistent and not too difficult to hit out. Bunkers were consistent, firm in the fairway, medium green side. Greens were pretty good, a couple showing some damage from the heat, and a medium speed.

Definitely a must play course. Wider than they look fairways and the most difficult green complexes I've played. If you miss the green or hit to the wrong side, you're looking at a difficult chip/pitch, a deep green side bunker shot, or a long double or more breaking lag putt. This course wears me out but so much fun to play.

Played 6-16-18 with Rob, Perry, and Brad in the GK outing on a nice warm windy day. Tee boxes were in very nice shape, level and lush with good coverage. Fairways had good coverage with some minor thin areas but mostly nice lies with a good amount of roll out. Rough was in good shape at a consistent height and very easy to hit from. Was in three greenside bunkers, one was a little firm and the other two were very soft. Greens were in good shape, medium/slow speed with an occasional bump and semi-soft. Great layout on a fun course that is a little out of the way.

Played in Saturday's GK Event at Coyote Springs and it was a pretty fun little round with Perry, Brad and Ron. I got there with very little sleep and little time to spare, but luckily felt pretty good throughout thanks to the cool, interesting course and the nice company.

Coyote Springs actually makes Rams Hill look accessible. It's quite out there, kids. An hour north of Vegas with absolutely nothing in between - pretty wild the whole story about how this place came to be and you have to respect whatever work it is they're doing to not only keep it up and running, but to also have it in pretty darn great shape all around.

Personally, while the course is by no means easy at all (Ron and I played from the blue tees), I find the rating and slope to be very high indeed. Not sure why that is but it could probably use a looking into in the future. But the course is indeed challenging, with no shortage of carries over water and waste areas, bunkers in the middle of just about every fairway, powerful winds that roll through the property, and fairly nutty green complexes that really make you think your way through your putts. There are even some decent elevations despite the flat desert around you, and many a fairway are wavy and undulating to test your shot-making from uneven lies.

Conditions were quite good all around and it was a very fun course to play, especially if you're having a good day finding fairways. If not, I can imagine it to be quite a bear. But the fairways had very good coverage mostly with just a few thinner areas here and there under that oppressive Nevada sun, and the rough was very nice - consistent but not too penal. The greens were in very nice shape as well but not crazy fast at all. They varied a decent bit in terms of speed throughout the day, but what you see is what you got. It's the lines and breaks that make putting tough here. With faster greens it may become a nightmare round. Tee boxes were in good shape and I was in a few bunkers and they seemed mostly very good.

Very nice surprise to have sandwiches and drinks brought out to us in the middle of the round, and I found the facilities overall to be very nice. Even the little café and pro shop were very well stocked and inviting. Also had cart service which was nice. But those gas-powered carts probably could use some changing out sometime soon. They're a bit loud when coming up on somebody about to swing the club!

So overall, if you're in the Vegas area and want to experience a very unique and fun experience, by all means check out Coyote Springs. Now, would I make a pilgrimage five hours away from LA again just to play here with absolutely nothing else around it? No, not likely, but that's not a knock on the place in any way other than the geography. However, if I was having a long Vegas weekend and had a few days to play golf wherever, I would absolutely come back up for the day. You would be nutty not to do it.

I played in the GK outing this past Saturday. This was my first time at the course. For being in the middle of nowhere I would say it’s worth the drive from Las Vegas or Mesquite. The wind was a factor but, thankfully, it was not terrible. Beautiful water features and generous landing areas on most holes. Greens were good. They putted at a nice pace. Not as fast as I like, but it was not slow unless you were putting away from the valley southeast of the course. That made for some interesting putts. After having golfed at Wolf Creek the day prior, these greens appeared very slow at times; however, I'm sure it's just an illusion as downhill putts ran well past the hole if you weren't careful. Fairways and rough were very nice to hit from. I saw no areas of damaged or missing turf. Tee boxes were level and lush. We got great service from the two beverage cart attendants and the delivery of lunch to us during the round was quite welcome. Always a great time with Greenskeeper.org. I would consider coming back on my next visit to the LV area.
