With the Gurus Wednesday. About as hot as I play and like it. Breezy so swing easy. Parred the first hole hitting the tight lie carpet fairway with my drive and five wood setting up a PW short the next long to a back pin and sunk the 12 footer back uphill for a par and close to the lead after hole one. Near the top of the leaderboard after one the double land for awhile
Really nice course and facility. My gps got me to the discrete entry gate but it’s easily missed off of Tourney Rd. Right away parking in the indescript lot you can tell this isn’t your run of the mill facility. Clubhouse is modern and clean with nice sight lines of the course from the second level. Around the first floor pro shop and snack bar the putting green Rolex time clock and driving range nearby to the left. Says 1965 opening date on the card but the CH is updated not indicative it’s kool.
Course offers the tight lie fairways that I wish I visited with more tee balls. Up close near the greens great challenges chipping and the greens are what I like lots of space and undulations.
Scored poorly but from my perspective playable recovery shots even though I was stuck in double land most of the 18.
A five of five recommend for this NLA area track. It could fit in in NorCal as a private venue that’s how I felt playing here. With the exception of some I5 traffic noise a few holes on front. Great variety of hole designs a few water hazards and good playing friends equals a great day at a new course. Happy Happy

Last time I played Valencia Country Club was 8 years ago, truly hope I don’t have to wait that long to get back on this exceptional country club with PGA Tour and Senior Tour history. Great day with GK Gurus (Wednesday 7/28) that also doubled as a preview round for the Golf Moose/GK Private Course outing I’m running on 8/16. Anyone attending that outing is in for a treat.

Despite our hot and dry summer, Valencia CC was still in great shape. Especially the fairways and greens. The greens were very smooth, medium/fast (normally very fast but due to the heat not cut down as much), firm on pitch shots yet holding approach shots. Fairways lush tight cut bermunda turf. Ball sat up great all day. Rough was mostly lush at times thin in the area where it was burned out from the heat. The rough is a blend of bermunda, fescue and kikuya. All the nasty stuff you want to avoid no matter what the length. Fortunately it was only about 2 to 3 inches because the ball always sat down every time making it challenging. Bunkers, well groomed, mostly firm with decent sand quality. Seems like the golf course is due for some new sand because the last time I played here 8 years ago it was new perfect white sand. Tee boxes in excellent shape. Lush bermunda like the fairways and cut tight. Have to say I love the traditional Robert Trent Jones Sr. runway style boxes.

Valencia Country Club is a very fun traditional Robert Trent Jones Sr. design. You have ample room to find the fairway off the tee but at the same time you need to be able to work the ball (mostly left to right) to avoid the huge mature trees on some holes. It’s a long course and almost all the greens are elevated so that makes it even longer. I played the White Tees at 6305 because I’m still without my driver. I love the front nine with its beautiful water hazards and tricky greens. But back 9 is more challenging IMO with an excellent long par 5 finishing hole. This is truly a strong test of golf. You need to be doing all things well to score. The greens have many undulations, steep bunkers, greenside water hazards. The fairways are all tree lined. The rough is normally deep. And of course the layout is long. It’s a super course that if you get an opportunity to play – play it! - Check out the fresh full spread of photos of its layout I posted.

Had the honor and privilege of playing Valencia CC for the first time riding the blues with Nick, Pedro and Matt. Nothing like playing a former PGA tour course with 4 buddies. We had Temps close to 100 degrees with about a 10 mph breeze. Pop was 4 hrs 30 minutes taking our time.

Driving range was all grass and elevated. Separate chipping/ bunker area and a beautiful putting green just outside of the proshop. Nice friendly staff I encountered in the proshop and snack bar. Complimentary ballmarks a nice touch. There putting green was comparable to the greens on the course which is always great.

The layout is very fun and challenging. If you like to hit a power fade off the tee you will love this place. Other than number 2 which is a dogleg left most holes bend left to right. Most green complexes are raised some where you are hitting up to them. Most green complexes have enough potato chip swales to keep a player very honest with their putting stroke. Water comes into play on 3 of the par 3s and provides a beautiful backdrop. Both par 5 finishing holes 9 and 18 are fun. The front nine is tighter than the back nine but most fairways had enough room if you could navigate around the mature trees.

The greens were probably rolling around a 10.5 on the stimp and if you were short sided on chips you could get an extra 5-8 feet of roll out on chips. Hardly any ballmarks and putting pure as gold. Start your putt online and you were making it. Rating the greens a 9/10.

Fairways lush, padded and in great shape. Perfect combination of great padding for irons and nice rollout for lower trajectory drives. Rated 8.5/10.

Tees level, lush and in great shape. Rated 9/10

Was not in any of the bunkers but they looked to be all raked and in good shape.

Rough was mainly lush with some dry spots due to the extreme heat. Mainly mowed down but could still be thick in spots. Rated 8/10

I would highly recommend this private CC if you get the chance to play it. Overall Rating should be close to a 9.

Rode the Blue/White combo tees (6508/71.9/131) in slightly more than 4.5H with Gary, Pedro and Matt. Super fun group to play with. Thanks to John for setting up and Valencia C.C. for having the guru's out. Clear skies with temps close to 100 and muggy made me not mind the breezy conditions as much as I normally would. Classic Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design. Had not played here since it was public in the mid 1980's and was surprised how little I remembered many holes. The the 9's have been flipped since I last played here. Mature trees line the fairways and the green complexes have hosted PGA Tour events, so that tells you all you need to know. Tees lush and close to immaculate except for several par 3's that were pretty chewed up. Several tees recently resodded that looked like lush fairways. Speaking of lush fairways... they were excellent to play from. Good cushion underneath, really liked the way irons played off these. Firm with good run out. Rough was thick but not super penal like I remembered. We were all advancing balls up around greens where I remembered if you found the rough, it was punch or wedge something back in play. Traps were well maintained and looked great. However, they did not play as well as they looked. More firm that the average player is going to want to see around the greens but the sand quality was very good. Need a good churning to make them less firm greenside. Greens... absolutely loved the way these large greens rolled. Only 1 green on the back had a significant amount of ball marks. Medium fast and firm, they were excellent. The chipping green on this course rolls better than any green on 75% of the courses out there. We had a few tight pin positions, but you could survey these greens and see potential pin positions where they could be almost unplayable if they wanted high scores. Customer Service was excellent. Cart gal around several times. Snack stand open with a good selection at high prices with excellent service. Pro Shops guys were friendly and on the ball. Complementary range balls on a very good practice facility. Complementary ball markers and bottled water were a nice touch as well. Well worth the play, highly recommended.

Got to experience VCC for the first time 7/28 where I had my GK match with Johnny GK himself at a Guru outing. The place is close to immaculate. Long, level, green tee boxes. Not a brown or thin spot to be found on the fairways. With a couple of exceptions they are on the generous side. Rough was is good shape, predominantly green and varied from easily recoverable to some thicker stuff that would challenge the recovery shot. Bunkers were generally good and clean with some firmer than others and nothing especially fluffy. Green complexes we're in good shape for short game and the greens themselves were very clean and smooth, running at a nice quick pace. There is some altitude change down from the clubhouse area so where there is slope, it can be pronounced, but the balance of the course is pretty level. All of it has a spacious yet private feel to it as there is limited evidence of the outside world when you are on the course. It feels like a retreat. While both nines are lovely, I rate the front nine as probably the more visually interesting of the two, but the back compensates with an especially expansive and dramatically contoured par-5 finishing hole. The carts are basic, had no screens and you frequently had to hunt around for markers posting yardages to pace it off. In a time where a lot of people have range finders or yardage apps of their own, I would think this is not an issue but be advised and come prepared if it is important to you. The practice facilities are excellent, so everything you need to warm up properly is there for you. The cart girl came around twice and the staff was polite and low key. Thanks to Johnny for the match and putting it all together, and to Pete and Ron for their company. Bottom line, a beautiful, classic course in excellent condition. (Note: while utilized by the author in the compiling of this report no shankopotami were injured in the process, although one Canadian goose will be filing charges against Johnny.)

This track is amazing!!! It looks like a PGA course on TV. The fairways are manicured to a tee. The greens are fast and undulating, you better try to stay below the hole. Hole 6 reminds me of the greens at Augusta National, severe undulation. Once you get to #6 green the games begin.There is water on several holes on the front 9 and it comes into play on many shots. The tee boxes are even and the rough is exactly that ROUGH!!! The service people around the course and in the clubhouse are a dream. The practice facilities are top shelf, you get to hit off grass most days and mats the others. The short game area is immaculate as well. Overall it is a fantastic experience. I joined 5 months ago and wish I had joined 5 years ago.

Got out to Big V Saturday 2/22 teeing off at 11am with a couple of friends. It was a bit rainy, so the course played pretty damp, and it was cart path only. Customer service is always great at Big V, they're all really nice people. I really enjoy the practice area. The chipping green is fantastic. The rain started coming down pretty hard, so I ran in for a Bloody Mary and some breakfast. Delicious! The course is in fantastic shape, if you exclude the fairways. Tee boxes were lush and level. The rough is gorgeous and lush. 3-5" long and thick! The greens were running around 10.5, but had definitely slowed down because of the rain. Beautifully smooth, and a pleasure to putt from. The fairways are a mess. Winter dormant bermuda...not many good lies to be had. Lift clean and place this time of year, but muddy and thin lies all day. They really need to start overseeding the fairways in the winter. If I was a member, I'd be a bit upset about paying all that money for those fairways. Overall, another great day at Valencia Country Club. I can't wait to get back out there in a month or two when the fairways come out of being dormant. Thanks again, Nathan!

Valencia Country Club 01.12.20

Today was a sunny day but the temps only went up over 60* towards the end of our round. It was a little breezy around 10:00 maybe 12 mph when we started, but it died down as the day went on so it was a nice day to go out. We got our round in after four hours and ten minutes.

The course was in its winter conditions which means the fairways were scalped and dormant and the ball ran pretty good, but the roughs were healthy and tall- 5 inches, although there were spots not so thick and were not so penalizing.

The teeing grounds in the combo (white/blue) tees were just fine and clean and they were level.

The fairway bunkers and the green side bunkers were also good with some well prepared white sand. Very good to play in, but of course, not if I can avoid it.

THE GREENS: whoa the greens, I was told that it has slowed down a little, BUT, it was lightning fast and smooth...whoa! I mean, I love fast greens, but these greens were ffffaaast and firm conditions!!! I never thought I would wish for a slower green, and I did, I prayed for it after a while... ugh! lol

This course can really beat a golfer up if any part of the game is iffy, it calls for great ball striking onto the fairways and greens and if lay up is in mind, stay in the fairways and commit to it- bring a sharp short game, too!

There was a beverage cart that came by us at least she got to us four times, and we also saw a few people we knew around the course and after the round. The place and the guys here are just awesome. Hope to come and play it again soon.

Late on this review, WALKED the blacks in the USGA event on Monday November 4. It was my first and last experience in a USGA event. If you get a chance definitely play in one, however I’m too old and just not good enough to qualify. The USGA had us walk this beast of a course from the blacks. This was the third time I’ve played this course this year. The Bermuda fairways are going dormant. In February with rain they will be mud. There are good lies to be had now. The rest of the course is what you would expect from a private course, tee boxes lush, rough, well rough, traps immaculate and the greens were perfect, rolling fast. We all had a good laugh as a member complained to a staff member before the tournament how the greens weren’t rolling true. All the muni guys had a good laugh. I definitely recommend this course from April-December when the Bermuda isn’t dormant. Playing in this tournament was a real eye opener for me. To the dude that had a 66 kudos my friend. There are some amazing players out there.
