I was pleasantly surprised with the conditions of the military muni golf course. Coming out on a saturday at 10am, you know it's gonna be a 5+ hour round and it was. This course is packed full of people. Thankfully we didn't wait more than 5-10 mins between shots and people seemed to move as fast as they could. Conditions from previous review are pretty spot on. Well covered and groomed fairways allow for nice rollouts. Most of the lakes have been allowed to dry out (drought?) so some of the misses aren't as penal. Course is relatively flat, however the greens are the most difficult part of the course. Very large greens with multiple tiers and undulations make this a very difficult putting course. Speeds are firm and fast. Tee boxes were mostly good and level. A few are a little slanted. It can get windy in the afternoon here from the ocean and make your shots pretty difficult to predict.

Overall I really liked this course, amenities, and conditions, however putting is extremely challenging and the slow pace of play make it more frustrating that it should be. I'd come back.. if I could ever find another tee time! :)

Happened to find a noon tee time yesterday on their website. $36 to walk is a great price for this course. When arriving the course was very busy, the range was full and there were a few groups at both course tee boxes. We ended up teeing off right on time at 12 and got around in 4:45 waiting on about 50% of the holes. Staff was alright at the proshop but the starter and snack bar staff were very friendly.

This was the first time playing here after many years of wanting to. My expectations were average as it is a government course so I wasn't expecting immaculate conditions. Turns out It was just as I expected, Fairways had full coverage of grass mowed tight with 2-3 types of grass. Rough was short and my FAVORITE Kikuyu! A few holes it looks like they are taking some of the grass out and turning to dirt but you had to be pretty far offline to find these areas. Tee boxes were hit or miss, they were cut short and some had some divot issues or lack of grass. I was in one green side bunker and it was in poor shape and no rakes were available. I did see 2 or 3 bunkers with new pure white sand so maybe they are fixing them up. Greens were in great shape overall, no divots which was nice to see and they were semi firm and fast. One thing to note is these greens are large and have many breaks to them. Accuracy is key on approached as all of the greens were elevated too so anything offline you had a steep drop to collection areas normally guarded by trees.

Overall this is a challenging course with some very long holes to deal with and the stiff ocean breeze making it longer. One par 5 is 570 yards and into a 10-15mph wind which made it a tough hole to play. We walked to course and its very flat. I would say about 50% of the people on the course were walking today. Carts looked new and did have a small GPS on them from what I noticed in the parking lot. I would recommend playing here if you can find one of the coveted tee times.

Played here in a threesome teeing off at 1:03 pm Saturday Jan 22nd and barely got in 16 holes before dark. Course is in very good conditions. Fairways are green and fluffy, no dry spots. Greens are smooth and consistently fast. This course is long and challenging dog legs and has a great layout. For $50 twilight with cart is a good deal but the downside is that it's very slow play. The range ball machine has issues and they put a twosome in front of us who we waiting on all day. There is no marshal until it got dark and they were calling in all carts. Funny thing happened when my friend hit a glow ball on hole 17 in the dark and got yelled it from the staff. They said no glow balls on military grounds.

Thrilled to get an invite to play the Navy course, as I seldom have an opportunity to play there. This course has always treated me rather poorly and today was no exception. No blame on conditions - it was all me. The course was in overall nice condition. Greens rolled well, had decent speed. Couldn't tell how receptive they were because I never hit any shots which would allow me to determine. Fairways provided nice roll out and for the most part had good coverage. Both bunkers I found has decent manicured sand.

I sure do miss the lakes, which are now devoid of H2o. Sad. Otherwise it nice to return and enjoy this course on a beautiful late autumn morning. Recommend

Played day after Thanksgiving and decided to walk to burn off all the Thanksgiving food. We finished in just slightly over 4 hours. Course was busy but no waiting on any of the holes. Course is in good condition. Greens are very nice and rolled true med-fast. Some Tees had divot damage. Fairways were green but people need to fill divot holes. Sand traps were okay with enough sand to get out. Most of the lakes have dried out. We were told that 2 of the 3 wells on the course had collapsed.

Late review – got out to Destroyer at 1:46pm on Thursday, 11/4/21, joining 3 related folks down from Alhambra who had previously played only the Cruiser course. Off on time on a clear. mild day with a steady light breeze – great golf conditions. We moved along OK before running up against the group ahead of us on #6 – waited on every shot after that. Overall course conditions were very good. Greens had great, lush coverage and held shots easily (BIG ballmarks). Still too many old unrepaired marks. The rolled well at medium+ speed before starting to show footprints and bumpiness pretty bad in the late afternoon. Fairway lies were good and you got pretty good rollout off the tee. Rough was cut low and very playable; you only got into funky stuff (deep, lush grass or bare dirt) when well offline. Greens are mostly elevated, pedestal greens, sloping B>F, with bunkers fronting. Sand in all the traps we encountered was of very good quality and quantity – only thing missing were the rakes. Tees were level and fine. Par-3 tees were a little torn up (we played White, 6,463/71.1/125), but those tees did provide divot repair mix. Simple GPS on the cart with hole picture, F/M/B of green, some landmarks, but not interactive or showing other carts. Most holes had yardage stakes and plates available. Saw the cart girl a few times, but snack shack on 8/12 tee was closed. Most of the water fountains were working!!! Lakes on the course are down or dry – many dozens of balls are visible in the drying mud. Refill bottles on carts and several replacement racks scattered around. One negative was the requirement to have carts turned in by sundown. We were not informed of this ahead of the round – a course marshall drove up and informed us on the 14th fairway that carts needed to be in by sunset, which he stated would be 5:55 pm. You could finish the hole you were on at that time. We had been chugging along behind the groups in front, but there was no effort by the course to manage the pace. After completing hole #16 at 5:47, we moved to the next tee, where two groups were waiting for the green to clear before teeing off, and hole #18 also had several groups on it. We had no chance of teeing off before 5:55, so we bailed and headed in. A solid play in very good condition. Recommended.

Played the destroyer course with Vince and Josh who was a single we met this morning. We teed off as 3 some with Josh the single walking. We followed a 3 some of 1 walker and 2 in the cart. Josh played the blues while Vince and I played the whites in just at 4 hours. Tee boxes nice and level while fairways were nice and green and it looks they were recently mown because the ball really sat up nicely. They are doing a lot work on the course now preparing for fall overseeding because they were rototilling just outside the fairways. The greens had recently been punched but it was at least 3 weeks ago because they rolled very nice and were a little quick but nothing out of the normal. The water level is very low from the lakes and I know we are in a drought but it doesn’t look the same. I felt the course was in very nice summer shape and look forward to playing here again soon.

Teed off Tuesday about 7:30 and finished in 3:50. The greens are in good shape. They rolled smooth with medium/fast speed and held shots. Pitches tended to rollout a bit. The fairways had mostly good coverage. There are some thin/brown spots scattered about. The rough along the fairways and around the green complexes are good. Long enough to affect shots but not too penal. The bunkers were groomed and played good. Although there are still no rakes. The tee boxes are mildly unlevel in spots but grass coverage was mostly good. Always enjoy the varied layout of Navy Destroyer. The staff was friendly.

Teed off about 8:40 Thursday morning finishing in 4:10. The greens rolling mostly smooth with medium/fast speed and holding shots. The fairways have good coverage with a few thin spots and decent rollout off the tee. The rough immediately off the fairways and around the greens has mostly good coverage and not too penal. The farther off the fairways the ball goes the more patchy the lie becomes. The bunkers were in decent shape but there were no rakes. The tee boxes were fair to good mostly due to mild unlevelness.

The driving range opens at 11am on Thursdays. Nice practice putting and chipping greens. The cafe is fully open. The staff is friendly.
