Played the General at 10am for the first time for 4.5 hour POP, with uncle Jimmy and cousin Yipp...to this day, Yipp is still afraid of the dark. Nice weather and nice staff. Never saw the cart girl, but the watering hole here between nueve and diez, is well staffed and stocked, getting you on your way quickly.

Tees, we were playing the whites from a new lateral, and there wasn't much 'trauma' to this placement. 3 out of 5. All decent shape, very few tee corpses and divots needing fills, were filled. Kudos to all the members of the two small separate events that had come before us.

Fairways, summer is over, and I don't expect those conditions now, but they were decent for this time of year. You could find some areas on most holes, where you would get winter relief. Otherwise, they would give, but more on the firm side, so I chose to sweep the ball more. 3 out of 5.

Rough, hmmm, the rough here isnt very generous for errant shots. It was shorter/dryer than expected, and it transitions quickly between the fairways and the 'Perris chapparal'. The OB stakes are way outside of that, so I found myself having to attempt some recovery shots from this 'Perris concrete'. ;-) 1.5 out of 5.

Traps, give about 3/4 of an inch, some more, some less. These are mostly dirt than sand, so avoid them, or bring your junk SW and go for it. They were trim and visually scatched after watering. Glad there isn't that many on this course. 1.5 out of 5.

AARG(Areas ARound Greens), within 20 yards around greens, I was pleased that these were green, cut and soft enough to allow my short game to thrive. 3 out of 5.

Greens, these were on the firmer side. Not only can you feel the firmness under your feet, the ball marks showed it, fixing the marks told you so, and putting was on the faster side too. 2 out of 5.

We paid $39 to ride, adjusted our game to the conditions, had nice weather, an were treated well by nice staff. We will come back in the spring and summer to see how different the course will be.

Played The General this afternoon as a 3some. Showed up around 2pm and had the course to ourselves. We didn't have group in front of us or behind us the entire round. Great afternoon.

Tee Boxes: The tees are the pretty decent shape. We played the blue tees and all had good coverage. The par 3s did have a bit of divot damage, but that is to be expected. Some of the tee boxes are a bit on the un-level side, but it was easy to move around the tee box and a nice spot to hit from.

Fairways: Fairways were in pretty good shape as well. There were some areas that showed some signs of stress from the recent heat, but overall, a nice surface to play from. We did have to "bump" the ball a time or two but overall, can't complain at all.

Rough/Bunkers: Rough was a bit on the "rough" side. There were quite a few areas that were bare and had gopher holes but, hit it in the fairway and you wont have to deal with it :). The bunkers were pretty good for the most part. There was sand in the few bunkers our group was in today and you could a good pass at all of them. No complaints.

Greens: Excellent. This is definitely the bright spot of the course. It looks like they put a lot of effort into the greens and it show. They were medium speed and rolled very true. Very minor pitch mark damage. Well done here.

For us, the best part of the day was getting to watch the military planes that fly out of near by March Air Reserve Base. Quite a show to see the aircraft that hovers around there. It is also cool to hear 21 gun salutes going on at the National Cemetery. Although it is sad that a solider has passed on, it is a reminder of the freedoms that we enjoy in this country and the sacrifices that it takes. It really does add to the experience at The General.

Overall - Good day on the course! Can't complain!

This was the first time I've seen the fairways so plush . The fairway grass was mowed about 1/4" to 1/2" , very nice . The tee boxes also have been worked on , nice and flat . With all the rain we had this year the rough on the side of the fairways had more weeds then grass and was mowed to a height of 3". This made it very hard to find your ball in 3 minutes . I lost 4 balls . The Greens looked nice and the ball rolled okay ( some bumpy surface ) but mostly smooth . I think the greens have been worked on recently ( aerated ) ? The sand traps looked like they had brick dust instead of sand . I didn't have any trouble getting out of the traps . Except for the rough I thought the course was in good shape .The sad thing is hearing the 21 gun salute and then taps at the Riverside National Cemetery . That made it very hard to have fun .

With the expectation of the mid-afternoon heat, I decided to take the drive up for a quick early back 9 at what we use to call El General. Man, has this place really taken a dump.
Tee boxes shaggy and uncut on many of the holes...slightly uneven as well. Fairways.....Fairways were horrible. Thin, weedy, some large areas of dirt! My nice drive down the middle at 9 was rewarded with a huge patch of dirt hard pan (wet) w weeds to hit off of. Greens are bumpy, clumpy w dead areas and areas of some diseases....weird yellow and green colors. These made for very frustrating putting. I used to come out here years ago for the back 9 and the greens were PURE poa annua.....fast too. A real bummer. Sand was well raked w/ a wet mud consistency. Rough was atrocious. ....reminded me of what Riverside Golf Club used to offer.....weedy dirt clump...terrible to hit out of. I'd be very dissatisfied if I was a Riverside local. Such a shame. I won't be back to play for minimum 6 months. Course superintendent needs to figure this out.

Almost forgot to review this course. Stopped off to play G.O. on 1/23 while on the way driving to meet up with GK Guru’s at Indian Wells. Had checked and noticed it had been over 10 years since I last played here. This course was part of our rotation at one time but times have changed. Walked up at noon and got right out as a single, $20 walking rate and finished in about 2.5 hours. The course is very average. I remember this course with very lush fairways, thick rough and fantastic greens. Fairways were in ok condition knowing this is winter time. A lot of bare spots out there but overall good. The rough is pretty beat up with dormant grass, dirt and hard pan. Bunkers were in very nice condition, good, fluffy sand. The greens were in great shape. Rolled true and a bit fast actually. I forgot how long it played from the blues – over 6800. Then again, I am older as well. I have never played well here and for some reason it has always kicked my rear. Some narrow fairways with small greens make it challenging. Nice layout though and is a fun course to play and for the price, its worth coming out here. Hoping one day we see the General of previous years!

Played yesterday before work - seems like a LOT of other people had the same idea!

Despite the recent rumors of it's impending demise, it appears "The General" will be around for quite some time. Supposedly, the property is being sold to the VA for future expansion of the National Cemetery but since there's plenty of space for that outside the course boundaries it will take decades before they run out of room.

The course is in decent winter shape. Fairways are like a quilt of green vs. dormant grass, ok to hit from but firm and drives will run quite a bit. What rough is there is usually thinner that the fairway, but about 25% is high, thick and very penal. Still need to level out a few tee boxes but you can usually find a decent spot. Bunkers are more dirt than sand but enough there to play out of - thin mantle crust over a heavier base but consistent.

Biggest surprise to me were the greens. Faster than usually and MUCH firmer. Normally these are "drop and stop" with anything shorter than an 8-iron - yesterday I hit a crisp GW that bounced about 8' high and rolled out a good 30'.

Overall it's a good layout in decent shape for a good price - can't beat that!

Recommended.

Like seeing a worn out and rusty 67 Mustang fastback on the road - you can be ok with what General Old is but know there was a day when this course was so much more and could be again with a renovation. I feel like General Old has good bones for a golf course.

The course has focused on tee to green and let basically everything else go. Perhaps winter is not the best time to get a first impression of a course. Tee boxes were mostly fine, fairways were an ok layer of surprisingly green grass over a very hard base - I could not believe how far drives travelled today - probably 20-40 yards over what I'm used to. Greens were in good shape - mostly smooth and medium fast winter speed.

Outside of the fairways is some rough - where it could find a way to grow - but mostly hardpan - so finding your ball could get interesting as the search zone was much wider than I'm used to. Some balls must have rolled an extra 50 yards rallycrossing it over the mounds of hardpan. Chipping also was difficult due to the thinness of the grass around the green.

I mostly liked the layout and could picture a much better course on this piece of land.

Played 10/29/18 at 7:00 am what can I say but its always nice to come back and play here.Very lush and green, greens were a bit soft which made for a bouncy putt with foot prints,tee boxes could use a cutting ,pace of play was at 4 hrs .Its just a fun course to play.An added bonus was a SCGA junior tournament had just started and were in awe on how these kids drive the ball.

Early morning Sunday tee time, out early to beat the heat. GO is a good no frills course. Tee boxes were a little beat up and a mixture of grass, fairways had good coverage and traps were ok. Rough was pretty brutal with some areas that have not been trimmed in awhile. Always amazed at how little divot damage and unfixed divots there are on the greens. Greens were a little bumpy and running at medium speed.
Staff is always friendly and POP was a little over four hours
