Haven't been here since 2014, so was excited to return. While not really my style of golf course, I have always enjoyed this course and the unique set of challenges it provides. They apparently just got new golf carts in, so that was a bonus. Sure glad I didn't have to walk this place, it would be tough.

For those of you that have read my reviews over the years, I rarely make any negative comment on the staff. The guy behind the counter was just not pleasant ! I don't know if it was because he is not a "morning person" but after dealing with him, it just left a real sour beginning to the day. Even one of the regulars outside said that was typical of that fellow. Even the starter made a comment to us about the guy. I didn't get his name, but I will remember him, if/when I ever return.

The course conditions were however very good, some of the better I've seen lately. My bride and I repaired more of our own ball marks on the greens than I can ever recall. Every shot it seemed made a ball mark and a few of mine even spun back, which is not my norm. Fairways were nice, as were most tee boxes. Not in any bunkers, but they appeared just so-so.

Great weather, fun golf course, good overall conditions, and other than the guy in the pro shop, a wonderful day.

Played in the GK outing 8-16-20 with Rob, Jerry & Johnny. Great golfing company on a very fun course. The summer heat has taken a bite, but the course is still playing well. Three weeks ago the fairway's were mostly green, but now there were many dried and brownout areas in the fairway's. But, even if you found one, the turf still played great. Greens were in great shape. Held shots well and ran at a good medium pace. Noticed a few bumps and wobbles, but mostly ran great. Traps very firm and Tee boxes typical Mt. Woodson fair. Over all in very good to great shape despite the Hot temps. Today on 8/18/20 it got to 107 !!! Easy recommend if you can get out early or prepare for warm temps.

This was a great outing despite having to reduce its size so the patio could accommodate all us of due to COVID-19 safety protocol San Diego County mandated. No indoor gathering permitted. I’ll be posting a recap of the outing on Greenskeeper.org today as well as make a Facebook post about it. In the meantime here is my review from a group organizer perspective.

This was our 4th GK Plays outing at Mt. Woodson Golf Club and every one of them has been fantastic. It’s a very interesting fun golf course but what also makes the outings so good is how great the staging area is for small outings like ours. The patio and small clubhouse are perfect to host up to 48 players with a cool comfortable vibe, good food and an excellent stocked selection of San Diego’s finest craft beers. Centrally located I could even run my check-in from the shade covered patio while saying hi to everyone rolling up, finding their golf carts, practicing putts, hitting balls from the practice cage and teeing off hole #1. Makes everything go very smooth. The staff from booking the outing to following up during our time there was excellent. They made sure it was all set up perfect. On the golf course the beverage service was on us all day making sure during the heat we never lacked hydration.

From a playing conditions standpoint the outing was originally schedule for June when the golf course is in peak conditions before Summer has had a chance to dry out the fairways and rough. When the heat wave hit this month I knew we would have some brown areas out there. However I also knew the Bermuda turf would hold up despite the light to brown color as a hitting surface and it did. Greens are always beautiful at Mt. Woodson and that was true on Sunday. Tee boxes are always divot riddled due to how small they are and the need to play irons and hybrids off the tee for ball position. Howwever there were move divots than I had ever seen this time due to the immense amount of play the golf course is getting because of COVID-19 and the fact the other golf course, San Vicente Inn and Golf, is closed for renovations so Mt. Woodson is the only game in Ramona. Still the tee boxes were level and you can easily find a good spot to hit from. Bunkers, and I found many, were mostly COVID-19 firm with no rakes which was tough to hit from due to the difficulty of them. When we finally move past this pandemic that would be the area I’d like to see the most improvement to playing conditions addressed. Overall, the golf course was in very good shape and pleasure to play! The layout, views and fun factor is so high there. Highly Recommended. I posted some photos so check them out.

I played yesterday in the GKplays event. I had a great time playing with Perry, Greg and Chuck. Although the course was not as green as I’ve seen in the past, the fairways had good coverage with only a few thin areas. The rough around the bunkers was long, thick and soft. It was really easy to chip out of- and I did a lot of it as I narrowly missed many bunkers. The tee boxes (red) were very uneven and in need of mowing. The greens were beautiful, soft and smooth. They made for a very successful putting day. I always enjoy playing this course. It’s short enough from the red tees to let me score well but is absolutely long on fun and challenge. The staff is great and I never tire of the ride over the bridge! Always recommended.

Definitely can't let the scorecard lull you into a false sense of security. Sure it's 5800ish from the tips, but that 134 slope may be low. The course is very challenging as it's not just Driver and chase, positioning and strategy definitely came into play.

Course was in pretty good shape. Fairways looked tight, with some browning, but definitely not rock hard. Very giving and thicker than it looks (huge fan of these types of fairways). Fairway rough was minimum, 1-2 inches, with thicker kikuyu around the greens. Green side bunkers are pretty deep with some thick, heavy sand. I thought the greens were great. Some unfixed ball marks but mostly smooth and a good almost fast pace.

A fun course but some local knowledge really helps. Staff was great. Nice patio area and a very nice selection of San Diego's finest craft beers on tap and cans.

I think conditions overall were good, as was customer service. POP was way less than 4.5 hours, respectable for a prime mid-moring weekend slot. Woodson will challenge you as well as reward you, and have you wanting to come back again for more. Recommended.

Had a great time playing in the GK Event this past weekend. It was pretty hot day out there when the breeze didn't blow, but otherwise not too bad.

Mt. Woodson is definitely a favorite of mine in SD County. I think it's such a unique setting and has some incredible views. The course itself is definitely short in length but not in character and difficulty. If you're even a bit crooked off the tee (I was ALL DAY) it's going to be an expensive day in lost balls. But if you can figure out a way to hit it straight you can really score here.

AS for the conditions, I thought they were really good considering the heat. The fairways (those I found) were really lush and great to hit from. There were some burned out areas on high points/mounds, but nothing that proved problematic.

The greens were really healthy and i thought rolled pretty true. A bit soft on approach shots but firm and fun to play on around the greens. I really enjoyed playing on them.

I was in one bunker and had to move my ball due to the Covid no rake thing but the sand was good. Tees seemed a bit chewed up but I'm guessing you have a shorter course where a lot of people use irons and the tee boxes themselves are pretty small in square footage. Probably an ongoing battle out there. Plenty level though so that's all I need.

The POP was pretty awesome at under 4 hours and the staff was great, from the beverage cart girl to the lady in the snack bar.

I just think Mt. Woodson is one of the cooler golf experiences in San Diego and I'd definitely recommend it. Super fun day!

Played Mt. Woodson as part of the GK Plays event on 8/16/2020. We had a great time! The course was in nice shape, the service was great, and everyone was friendly and willing to help when needed.

The tees were a bit shaggy, but were level, well defined, flat, and with minimal damage. Some very challenging tee shots from the blues with some big carries and partially blind shots, but this just added to the enjoyment and challenge.

Fairways were a bit narrow, but well maintained, lush with very few bare spots and a cushion in spots that demanded that you consider your lie in many places. Flier's were not uncommon. The greens were somewhat undulating, but fair and I thought slightly slow. In that respect I think it was a blessing as faster greens could really prove to make this a beast. There were quite a few ball marks, but the greens were very receptive.

The layout was amazing. Some of the views are spectacular! This is not a course to just grab driver and pound the ball as far as you can. Definitely a thinking players course. When first looking at the scorecard it feels like with the shortness overall, this course could be taken advantage of, but it's a sneaky tough track and one I look forward to coming back to.

If there was one shortfall, it would be the carts are dated with no GPS. Fortunately, I had a device to assist me, but as a first time player there, I can't imagine tackling this without some kind of device. Overall it was a great time and I look forward to playing there again when I get back down to the San Diego area.

Taking in the fact that it has been 90°-100° every day for the last few weeks this course is still in good shape. there are a few areas that are burned out but the rest is lush as can be. The fairways that I encountered were very lush in parts with a couple areas burned and firm. I would say 80% lush carpet like conditioned. Rough was a little worse as they are focusing on watering the fairways and greens. Greens were nice to hit into soft enough to hold most shots and get a little spin. I found a lot of sand yesterday and I would rate them at a 6. There was enough sand to make proper contact but I would like to have a little more especially on hole 6. One downside is the lakes are not completely full of water and the lake on 8 is back to being a stinker covered in algae. I am surprised that the lakes on 5 and 6 which was recently renovated were probably at 40% capacity. I assume they are using the water for irrigation which is understandable.

The staff was mostly great but at the turn the starter gave us flack saying we need to keep up with the group ahead which we had been the entire front 9. We also finished the front in 3hr 50min but he was rude and insisted to keep up. I heard rumblings from other groups that the on course Marshall was being picky too but we didn't have any issues with him.

I highly recommend playing here but just know there is no driving range and the worlds smallest putting green 8'x8' with two holes. The original one was let go and is just burned out grass now. Make sure your driver is accurate otherwise you're gonna have a bad time.
