Rode the Blacks (73.8/136/7012) today 1/3/2017 playing the Creekside/Canyon Crest Combo and then playing the Ridgeline 9. Very nice staff and starter today let me go before my scheduled tee time which I had at 12 noon. Used a gift card from Santa but at that time its $62.00 for twilight. POP for the first 18 holes was 3 hrs and the last 9 holes took about 2 hrs behind a couple groups. Weather was epic 58 degrees for a high with no wind. Had not played here in over 2 years--too long to let that happen again. Greens were the highlight of the course. I could putt these greens everyday and twice on Sunday. Pure, no bounces, soft on iron approaches, hardly any ballmarks. Probably rolling a 10 on the stimp. Probably my favorite greens in the County. Rated 8.5/10 Fairways were nicely padded brown dormant grass. Never had a bad lie in any fairway. They have a great looking contrast to the super lush green rough. They were not summer good but excellent considering the time of year. Rated 7/10 Rough was beautiful, green and semi-lush 2-3 inches in spots. Rated 8/10 Tees were beautiful, lush, level and had some minimal damage on par 3's only. Rated 8/10. Was only in 1 greenside bunker that was perfectly raked and contained soft sand. Rated 8/10. I love the layout at Moorpark--Creekside, Canyon Crest Combo a blast to play. This is one of the best courses in the greater Los Angeles/Ventura county area--highly recommended.

Played MPCC on Thursday, 12/22 with a 10:48am tee time. Pace of play was fine at 4:15 for 18 holes. Through the 4th hole, the wind was really howling. It was blowing 25 to 30 MPH, making even putting a real challenge. The wind gradually starting dying down after the 4th hole. By the back 9 there was only a gentle breeze at most. It turned out to be a beautiful day. Winter fairways have come to Moorpark. They are fairly brown and a little thin, but very playable. The rough, greens, and tee boxes are very lush and in great shape. The greens were rolling smoothly and were medium fast. The only complaint with the greens is the numerous unrepaired ball marks. The two greenside bunkers I was in had plenty of sand. They were a little damp and firm from the rain we received overnight. That was to be expected. I enjoyed the round and will be back.

This is review, as I played with the guys on Thursday as part of the GK Review Guru tee times. Moorpark CC has always been one of my favorites, and has one of the best par 5's (Hole 5 on the Ridgeline Course; 620 yards from the blues). We played the Canyon Crest and Ridgeline combo. It appears they over seeded the rough and are allowing the fairways to show winter dormancy. As the rough grows in, it will be a striking look with deep green framing the straw colored dormant Bermuda grass fairways. Both nines had great greens. They ran fairly fast and were soft enough to leave deep ball marks on most shots. Good grass coverage from tee to green, with ample amounts of dormant grass under your ball in the fairways. A couple of areas in the fairways were overly wet, but it should improve as they reduce the watering in those zones. Wonderful views from most tee boxes and a very nice setting away from most of the developed areas with the exception of a couple of holes on the Canyon Crest nine; however, those holes are not too close to homes and those are really nice houses! Moorpark has a very nice practice facility with a large range, practice chipping green, and one of the biggest practice putting greens around. Their clubhouse and restaurant is as about as nice as any I have been in. I love this course and hope to be back soon. It is always nice to play a round with fellow GKers, and my thanks go out to Ron and Kevin for a fun round. Big thanks to Johnny GK and Moorpark Country Club!

Played a GK Review Guru round with 6 other GKers. Enjoyed the day immensely. Looks like I found a solid winter golf option in Moorpark CC considering how nice the overseed on the tees, rough and green surrounds came out. Granted the fairways are going to be left to go dormant but I really like the contrast of the light green/blonde fairways to the bright green rye green perimeters. I posted some photos here. Bunkers in great shape with quality sand and well groomed. However, the highlight of the round from a conditions standpoint was the greens. Smooth, medium/fast and soft/sticky. I see the greens only getting more smooth, firm and fast over the next couple months.

Moorpark CC is like playing a private course from a golf course, facilities and service level yet affordable for the quality of golf experience from a public level. It's a semi-private course with no commitment type memberships. There are some cool membership benefits put in general they treat every player with that welcoming membership mentality.

I enjoy all three 9’s at Moorpark CC. We played the Canyon Crest to Ridgeline combo. I always like starting on the Canyon Crest 9 as its more open off the tee. Canyon Crest is my second favorite 9 with my very favorite the Creekside 9 although certainly the most difficult 9 of the 3.

POP was excellent on our Thursday morning round teeing off at 10am. I could play this course every month. Highly recommended.

Played 12-8-16 mid morning with the GK Guru group on the Canyoncrest/Ridgeline rotation in a little over 4 1/2 hours with waiting on most holes. Tee boxes were in good shape, lush and mostly level. Fairways are going dormant, but they are very nice to hit from with great lies. Rough has been overseeded and is playing very nice, not to long and semi-lush. Was in a couple of bunkers, one fairway that had nice sand but a lot of good sized rocks, and one greenside that was very nicely groomed with good firm sand. Greens were in really good shape rolling true with medium/fast pace, but a little on the soft side. With the fairways going blonde and the rough a nice bright green it really gives the course a neat look.

You should be jealous of me. You should also be jealous of the rest of the GK Gurus who got to play Moorpark on an ideal winter day where the sun made an effort to keep you warm and the wind made little effort to take that warmth away. Moorpark does feel like a private country club without the formality of one. It has a driving range that looks better than the signature hole on many courses. If you decide to have a drink after your round - your beer will get old before the view does. There are various views that look constructed by a master Broadway set builder but are simply the amphitheater of hills and mountains that surround the course.

Moorpark consists of 3 nines that should be labeled with Ski slope like difficulty. Canyon Crest (blue square) Ridgeline (black diamond) and Creekside (double black diamond).

We played the friendly mix of the first two so I mostly blame myself for the poor results on the half a dozen of holes where things got away from me.

Conditions would have been considered great to me any time of the year but considering it's winter you have to be extra happy with the fairways, rough, and greens we played on.

Being my first opportunity to play MCC, I found it to be a great experience, with a GK Guru tee time. The staff was friendly and helpful, the cart came complete with GPS maps and data, You can even order food right on the screen menu, and have it brought out to you. The clubhouse itself was as good as they get, real nice. This is one of the more beautiful courses I've played, with great scenery in all directions. What I really liked was how quiet it was, with no noisy freeways nearby. The weather could not be more perfect that day. I found this course to be real challenging because of the many hills and slopes. The fairways are well kept, and the greens well manicured. With many roughs and gullies to challenge, I managed to only loose one ball! I would play here again in a heartbeat.

Played Canyon Crest and Ridgeline tracts yesterday. The weather was perfect. MCC is a beautiful course with great views and a nice staff and facilities. Make sure you bring your A game though because the tracts are challenging. There's lots of up and down shots and some blind tee offs where a driver can get you in trouble. If you're not playing to a single-digit or low teens handicap don't play the blue or black tees and think you're going to do well. You must manage this course and in many cases stick to clubs that you feel confident in hitting straight balls with. There's lots of opportunity to lose balls. You'd be smart to go the course website (the link is on their page on Greenskeeper) and click the 'Golf' menu item and then click the links for the tracts where they have advice on playing each hole. Even consider printing out the pages. Don't trust being able to access the website on the course on your phone because cell phones don't work very well there, at least mine didn't.

Went out to Moorpark this morning for a GK Guru tee time, getting off a little after 10:00 with fellow GKers Ron and Kevin, and Johnny GK leading the foursome behind us. I think this is a scenic, interesting and challenging course and we really couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day for it. I don't get out here often, but always feel it's treat when I do. I hit into some interesting places over the course of the day, but a bunker wasn't one of them, so I can't address those. Otherwise, everything else was consistently good. Tee boxes were generally nice and flat with good coverage. Fairway grass was short but full, with a soft base offering a nice hitting surface. There were some stretches that were a bit soggy — presumably from irrigation since the rain wasn't too recently — but not a significant issue. The greens' surrounds were in very nice condition, allowing for up-and-down-opportunities. I thought the greens themselves were clean, ran a good quick pace and tracked nicely. Service was fine with the cart coming around at least a couple of times. pace was a little sluggish at times and it was probably about 4.5 hours. The views of the surrounding area and mountains from many points on the course give the whole experience an extra aesthetic boost. There is a really nice bar and patio area to grab a drink or bite after the round. Thanks to Johnny for securing us the tee times and the special price. Good company always enhances the experience, so thanks to Ron and Kevin. It will probably be a little while before my next round out here, but I will definitely be back.
