having played the north 2x, i had my first foray on LS south this past saturday for a 6:45 ish tee time as a single. was supposed to go with another 2 some, but when i saw they were running late, i joined the 3 some that was supposed to tee around 6:30 and didn't get off until 6:45 instead, w/out notifying the starter. starter seemed a bit out of sorts to begin with. also worth noting that i had to remind the shop guy that it's $45 to walk when he tried to charge me $60, which felt a bit disingenuous even though i paid $45 as i walked. nevertheless, after some deliberation i decided to give those monster black tees a try, and the course does not play 7600 w/ all the run out and elevation changes. given i played LS north in early may, the conditions were rather dissapointing. the greens were okay, but the fairways were really lousy. the rough i had no issue with b/c its rough and its supposed to be inconsistent. but again, the fairways were a letdown and the PoP for a pre 7 am TT was also suspect, finishing in about 4:15. feel like at that hour it should be sub 4 and you should never wait to hit a shot, and we waited maybe a dozen times. as for the layout, i heard some people call the north quirky or gimmicky, which i've disagreed with. i just think the south is kind of boring and monotonous. nearly all greens were elevated with a bunker or two around it. even some of the memorable holes, which were about half or 2/3 of them, were kind of blah. net net, i'd rather play the north from the back tees than the south from the blacks or blues if had the choice, it just requires more golf shots and decisions to make around the course. but really, the conditions were just such a let down even for the reasonable greens fee. i can't grasp why the maintenance staff can't just go out there with a gallon of spray paint and mark off GUR areas in the fairways that are clearly ground under repair. not sure i'll be back to the south.

Played Tues June 5th at 715, got there at 6 for breakfast and the place was completely empty, no one on the driving range either, thought wow 320 round, well we got out 8 minutes early behind a 4 some, or maybe it was 2 2 somes they put together. 2 guys playing blues and 2 guys playing whites, one new to golf, a beginner. Slow, it was a 430 round and while that sounds "ok" it was slow. I must say IMHO it is cruel to take a beginner and play the South even from the whites (6743 yards and 133 slope) golf is supposed to be fun and when you are beginning you don't need the challenge of this par 74 course. The course conditions were not great, several fairways were aerated and plugs all over the place, bunkers were not good wet, muddy and thin sand, greens were lightly sanded and it affected the putts, speed slow and they didn't break light they should.

Got out this morning at 6:10 for $60 riding rate. Not much to add to the previous review, the course is really nice right now and the greens are a pleasure to putt on. Pace was ok at just over 4 hours... Continue »

Got out this morning at 6:10 for $60 riding rate. Not much to add to the previous review, the course is really nice right now and the greens are a pleasure to putt on. Pace was ok at just over 4 hours, a little slower than one would expect for this early in the day. The bunkers I was in could have had a bit more sand, but that's really my only gripe. I don't know why, but I feel the greens here are really easy to read, and even very fast putts from above the hole seemed simple. Love this course, always in my rotation.

Played 5-15-18 early morning as a single walking for $30 and finishing in 2 hours and 45 minutes. Tee boxes were mostly in good shape with a few of them being a little thin and some divot damage on par threes. Fairways were semi-lush with some thin areas, but mostly provided good lies with descent roll out. Rough was pretty short for the most part with some small thicker areas around the greens and some bare spots along the fringes. Was in one greenside bunker that was nicely groomed and had a descent amount of semi-firm sand. Greens were in really nice shape, semi-soft, medium speed and mostly smooth with an occasional bump. Overall conditions are real nice right now, and definitely worth playing.

As it had been a while since I played the South course, thought I'd return. My original plan was to play the "Jack's Black" tees, but given the cool damp early morning conditions, I thought better and decided not to punish myself and play the blue tees instead. Good decision! Still all the course I can handle and more even at those tees.

Conditions were typical Los Serranos. Greens were the best part of the course, but otherwise everythingelse was decent. Few spots in some of the fairways, but nothing too bad. Both bunkers I found had plenty of sand and were well raked.

Not very busy and staff was as usual very accommodating. Always enjoy playing here, but I sure do miss all the trees !

Played Tues may 15th at 722, good breakfast as usual, got off on time as a 2 some following a 3 some who let us play through on the third hole. Didn't catch up to anyone until 10, a single following a 4 some and we decided to play together at 12, POP was good at 325, course is in good shape, tee boxes level and you can tell recently punched as the tee found some holes, fairways were good not lush but nice, bunkers weren't bad, rough was long wet and penal, greens were a little harder as the ball marks were small, but rolled very well. Course was very empty which is actually nice. Lol

Course is in fine shape. tee boxes a little worn out but at least even, fairways were just OK because there were many dry spots and muddy areas were they are over watering and greens, well some were good and some still show signs of past weeks aerafication but still the ball would roll okay. Customer service was ok and so thankful that they replaced all the range balls with new ones. Cant beat the rate. regardless of your age the rate is $35 bucks weekdays.

Played Fri Apr 20th at 722am, breakfast good, checked in and used my 2nd free round from my book, very fast and easy. Got on deck and watched a 3 some tee off from blue and they barely made it to the trees on the left side, they waited for the group in front of them like they could hit it 230 off the deck, long slow hole, the second hole was the same, we were putting on #2 and saw them way back on blues on hole #3 heard several balls hit trees, they were in the trees on the right when we got to #3 tee box and there was one of their balls. On the white tee box. We were putting on #3 and saw that they moved up to the white tees. Well duh....Then my friend looked at his watch, it was 1 hour and 5 minutes for 3 holes, that is a 6 hour pace, he quickly called the starter and they sent a marshal out, there were 3 groups together and they were all slow. The marshal stayed on top of things trying to get back on pace, but it was terrible POP at 450. The coures was in decent shape, no issues with tee boxes and fairways, a few greens were still a little bumpy but rolled nice, receptive and always a ball mark to repair. As good as the Norths sand traps were last time we played there, that is how bad the south traps were, we will return in about 2 weeks, still a great value with good holes on both courses and we have more free rounds.

Heads up - Los Serranos South was aerated, probably 7-10 days ago.

I was shocked upon looking at my spreadsheet to see that I haven't been out here in almost 10 years, as I liked both of these courses. Just a little far to get here. The 5am drive from San Clemente to LS was easy, but coming back from LS to Irvine at 9:30 am took me 90+ minutes.

Outside of the aerated greens, LS South is in good shape. Fairways are plush and not too tight. Rough is hit and miss. Tee boxes were nice. I was not aware of the green aeration, so that was disappointing. They are still bumpy, but not so bad as to make me regret coming here. I am sure in 2-3 weeks they will be nice.

I still enjoy these courses. Even though I've played the south a half a dozen times, I still get surprised by the par 74 and the sheer length of this course. Bombs away - there's lots of room to miss, but you'll get some tree trouble coming back.
