Never having played Oak Valley and rarely in the area, I drove out on Tuesday, 11/25 to meet a buddy to catch up on life and share a round on his home course — him literally renting in the development. The week after all the rain, it was good timing because things were greened up but not sloppy. Playing the whites, conditions were solid and a step above my normal muni excursions. Teeing grounds were green, clean and while I wouldn't take a level to them, they were consistently level enough. Fairways had consistently green coverage and good lies. The rough was similarly green and on the thick side, more often costing a shot. Missed the bunkers and the grooming appeared average. Green surrounds could be on the heavier side and hitting into the grain could be an ugly result, while the putting surfaces were clean and running at the fast end of medium.

Not a readily walkable course, $60 with cart seemed like a pretty solid deal. It has a good amount of contour with interesting holes and the occasional altitude drop or rise. A few holes required some carry on the tee shots or the second shots, and there could be consequences for getting off line (drop off, water, etc.) but the fairways were a reasonable target width. I think the main challenges tended to be around the green complexes. Frequently they eliminated or minimized the roll up option with bunkers, elevation or an angled alignment to the fairway. Bottom line, between the course itself and the nearby snow capped mountains, there was some nice visual interest and more than a reasonable amount of challenge for those of us not blessed with single digit handicap level games. We teed of around 12:40, had a painfully slow group in front of us, skipped them and the tenth hole at the turn and finished on 17 due to failing light. Don't know if/when I will ever be back, but I would welcome it with the bit of course knowledge I gained.

Played on Thanksgiving, course in good shape. Excellent driving range included in the $125 green fee, a steal this time of year for a course this good in the Desert Area. Course was busy and we still made it in 4hours 15 minutes. Greens a little slow, front nine a few strokes harder than the back nine. A good mixture of long holes and shorter ones, real short par 4 #11 and #15. Bunkers around greens were great for a change, fairway bunkers were good but for some reason some had weeds growing in them which was strange as the rest of the course is in great condition. Rough was not high at all but most holes if you miss playing area your ball is gone as vegetation is thick and not playable (or finding your ball) possible. Highly recommend if your going to try and play out in the Desert Area where many are over or closer to $200 during this time of year.

The third and final round of the Vegas trip was at Anthem Country Club on Wednesday. This is allegedly one of the higher end CC’s in the Vegas area. I will be as open minded as possible during this review and my comparison will be against other high end public courses in the area and not against the Uber elite Southern Highlands CC which I played the day before playing Anthem.

I’ll start with the layout. Anthem has some of the widest fairways I have ever seen. It really begs a grip it and rip it attitude. Plenty of room for error in the landing zone with only the occasional bunker to disturb a tee shot that lands anywhere in the same zip code. Stray way way off path and your ball is in a creek or bare desert terrain separating the course from the surrounding houses. Plenty of modest elevation changes throughout the course but most holes are pretty straightforward. The course has a number of water hazards, but most are behind the green. Overall it was a decent layout similar to that of Serket or the two courses at The Revere Golf Club.

Greens at Anthem were very large. They had moderate undulations and rolled at a nice medium-fast pace. Fairways had some of the weirdest grass I’ve ever seen on a golf course. On the surface it looked fine but it had the tendency to grab your club in the worst way. On the other hand the rough was great. Only about 2” deep but lush and predictable.

Overall, Anthem is a nice course. Nothing super fancy but definitely enjoyable with decent playing conditions. I would put it on the same level (or a touch below) that of Serket.

Regarding recommending the course, I’d say there are better options (especially if you have to pay the ridiculously high “holiday week reciprocal fee” but if you get invited by a member who wants to treat you, don’t turn it down.

Early morning 4.5 hour round on a very green course. The staff faces are very familiar over the years and do a great job keeping things going. The practice facilities are good and conveniently located. The carts are probably about five years old with no GPS and some drive like an old Chevy. The tee boxes are all level with total coverage but were a little firm at times. The rough is not very long where there is some and easy enough to hit from. The fairways have real nice coverage and were just cut earlier in the morning which left clippings everywhere. The over seeded fairways were covered with fertilizer as well and slightly damp. You would have to lift, clean and place nearly every shot. Many golfers were too lazy to fill their divots in the new growth fairway which was discouraging to see. The traps here have always been lacking sand and compact wet sand and dirt. They were no different today. The greens have really nice total coverage but were still a little bumpy from the fall maintenance, The greens held shots nicely and were extremely quick (we forgot how quick). There were a few ball marks but not too bad compared to the number of unfilled fairway divots. The lakes come into play on several holes and at times you have to deal with all the ducks and geese on the course. The rates were hiked up for the holiday weekend and the usual walking rate was not offered. The location and course conditions make this a good place for a round with the option of the two courses.

Course lush and in very nice over seeded condition. No longer all the time CPO, but still may be early morning or after a rain. Tees and fairways lush and well maintained. Still cut high, so less roll out than normal. Sand near immaculate. Rough mostly dormant, clumpy Bermuda mowed low. Lies can vary tremendously within a small area. Large Bermuda greens firm and medium quick. Few ball marks. Restaurant good for a golf course. Customer service excellent both inside/outside the club. Practice facilities and the GPS on the carts both excellent. Men's lounge nice place to have a meal or get a drink with numerous big screen TV's in a friendly atmosphere. Newly renovated gym is a nice addition as well. Highly recommended.

Course in very nice post over seeding condition. Will be better in a few weeks when the over seed is more mature. Fairways and Tees lush and well maintained. Cut high, which makes for a long course with little roll out. Rough has some bare areas and is generally not overly penal. Mixture of Bermuda, weeds and over seeded grasses. Bermuda greens rolled nice @ medium fast speeds. Always firm here, few ball marks. Traps always good to excellent here. Well maintained and rarely will you find inadequate amounts of sand underneath your ball in greenside bunkers. Customer Service VG from the pro shop to the cart guys to the men's lounge. Good GPS on plush, new carts. Driving range and practice areas are very good. Highly recommemded, good shoulder season prices. Still may be CPO early morning or if it rained the night before.

I’ll start things off regarding the name change. Rio Secco is now officially called Serket. I talked to the head pro regarding the name change and he clarified the course is still under the same ownership along with Cascata. Apparently they paid a licensing fee for the old name so instead of paying the increased fee and passing that along to players, they opted to change the name. I’m good with that.

For all the times I’ve played Cascata, I’ve never played here before. We tee’d off on Monday with a mid/late morning tee time. Weather was absolutely perfect. Course layout was fun with a number of elevation changes. I would have liked to have seen some more water features but there were some other forced carries to make up for it. Conditions were very nice all around. Fairways were great. There had been a lot of rain the previous few days so it was CPO which was a drag as it slowed the round down to over 5 hours. Other than a couple of plugged tee shots, the fairways weren’t bad at all. Definitely plush and easy to hit off of.

Greens were also on par with the level of this course. They rolled smooth at a medium pace and had what I would call a normal amount of undulations. Enough to challenge you, but nothing overwhelming. Tee boxes were level. Sand traps were a bit thin from time to time but overall ok. Customer service was excellent from the pro shop attendee’s to the waitress in the restaurant. Bag drop and club cleaning afterwards to ensure you get the complete service.

If you do the Double Down or whatever they call it with the Cascata package this is a great second course at a very reasonable price. In fact, I actually liked Serket better than Anthem Country Club which we played a couple days later and paid a WHOLE LOT more to play.

POP is something that needs drastic improvement. Can easily stretch to 6 hours on packed weekends. Tee times are too packed with 7 min internals.

Was able to get a great deal for Thanksgiving. Love playing at this great course. $109 for HI golf. Located right in Kihei and a great way to start the day. Drank my coffee, watched the sunrise and teed off. Course is in great shape. Perfect way to start a Thanksgiving day. Yes there are the big name courses here but why spend the money when all you want is a good round of golf on a good course. I only hope I have many more years to come here and play. I hope all of you GK members had a great Thanksgiving like I did.

Early morning time finishing in about 4.5 hours. The staff has always been efficient and friendly in all my years of playing here. The carts have GPS which is probably the most accurate of any I've ever used. The practice facilities are well maintained and convenient for the golfers. The tee boxes all had good coverage and were level with few broken tees. The rough is extremely long from the recent rains and difficult to hit from if one is able to locate their ball. The rough really slowed up play with our foursome losing six balls during the round. The fairways had good coverage with actually a few dry or dormant section scattered throughout. The mostly Bermuda turf was mostly damp and cut extremely short making for many very tight lies. There was a ton of roll for those shots that kept themselves in the short stuff. The traps were all well groomed and raked with mostly adequate sand. I found many and the fairway bunkers do have quite a few pebbles and rocks in them. The greens have almost totally healed from the fall maintenance and have complete coverage. There were not very many ball marks but the softness allowed for footprints which could be noticeable. The greens held shots very well and rolled true. The quickness of the greens is almost back their diabolical speed which quickened as the round progressed. It's always great to have an early tee time here as the play bogs up as the day goes on. Overall the course looks really nice and is in the best condition I've seen it in for years with reasonable weekday rack rates.

Had a 2:30 reciprocal time On the Ocean course which I had never played before.
Doubted I would finish but they charged me the twilight rate, so I figured maybe 13 or so holes. I have never seen a private golf course so busy. I don't know how many members they have but this place is an absolute golf factory. Full tee sheets on both courses and every stall on the range in use. The nine-hole course wasn't very busy, but I think that was only because it might have been closed earlier in the day for maintenance.

As expected, the course was in perfect shape, wasn't in any bunkers but I threw a few in on the short course and they had nice fluffy sand, so I assume the same conditions on all courses.

Just a solid old school layout that was really fun to play. Fairways short of the greens were a little thin (perhaps on purpose) and damp (probably always) so chipping was a real challenge for me. I was too afraid, so I used a lot of Texas wedges or bump and runs but the guys I played with seemed to be able to pull em off and spin some wedges.

Like the Lake course I think it was designed in the twenties by Willie Watson and has been redone many times due to storm damage. I believe originally it was on the cliffs by the ocean and the holes got washed away in a storm. Tom Weiskopf did a redesign, and you can see his handywork all over the course. Good mix of holes including a few drivable par 4'S for big hitters and some bunkers right in the middle of the fairways to be avoided.

Wasn't in any of the bunkers but they looked like no bargain, same with the rough.
Fairways are all treelined by huge cypresses but not overly claustrophobic. No water hazards and I was able to play with one ball. The guys I played with sprayed a bunch of tee shots that I thought were deadsville and we found them all. So, a fair test of golf. White tees were 6221 But 71.1/128 for a par 71. Didn't seem to play that tough but there was no wind. I will say not a lot of flat lies.

Been a long time since I played the Lake course, but this one seems to have much more elevation change. Lots of members walking but I would consider it a tough walk even though the tee boxes are close to the greens. We got in 13 holes as it was getting dark, and the guys I played with bailed so that's where the fun began. I had to wait for the foursome on 14 to clear the green and then everyone started bailing. I played 15 and 16 two long par fours with my phone flashlight and hitting the ball down the middle. 17 is what seems a really pretty par three that I played in the pitch black. Couldn't even find the tee box for 18 and was afraid of driving into a tree. So, I packed it in.

Obviously not the star that the Lake Course is, but a very good golf course on its own. Probably gets lost in the shuffle in the radius of so many spectacular courses, but like Del Monte not to be overlooked and a real pleasure to play.
