No reviews for three years so I thought I would add a new one. Course is in good condition. Sand in bunkers was not great but playable. Greens were OK but lots of ball marks.

I was told course is under new management.

I would play again but it was slow play with a Tuesday January 6 10:30 tee time. Took four hours to play 15 holes and then I left.

Played here a couple of times this week. Another Club Corp owned course and strangely going thru same maintenance issues that Coto went thru a few years ago (I joke, it's not strange, it's to be expected if you've played Club Corp courses before). First off, due to rains last week, the course was quite muddy since it doesn't drain very well. Being so flat doesn't help. Rare to play a course that doesn't have any houses on it. However, the 405 freeway noise and Naval air station next door creates a constant buzz you hear all day long.

The front nine has a lot of holes that look the same and is kind of boring. It's been twenty five or so years since I last played here and that is when they moved the first hole about 40 yards right of where the driving range is now, and eliminated holes 2-3 so they could build a shopping center on that land. Course was also built up a few feet because it used to flood all time. The back nine is much more interesting, especially the last two holes which could be problematic playing into the prevailing wind. Easy to walk.

Greens are very large and undulating and quite firm even after all the recent rain. Had decent speed to them but footprints were rampant and ball marks were everywhere. Surrounds were quite good but anything just off them was very hit or miss Bermuda rough. Fairways were not overseeded (a common ClubCorp technique to save money) so I'd expect brown or very little grass until about June. Bunkers were in very good shape with ample sand but that should be expected after a bunker renovation a few years ago. Tee boxes were level and it looks like they are experimenting with different types of grasses to see what works best. Lots of lakes but most fairways are wider than you think.

A solid yet unspectacular golf course where you will probably only remember a few tee shots and the 17th and 18th holes. Winter conditions pull the enjoyment level down a few points.

Membership is $70k + $1800/mo dues. Taking advantage of higher prices at Huntington Club and Virginia. Membership probably still paying for the spectacular clubhouse that was built in 2021.

Played the Legends at 8:35 this morning and should have cancelled instead of ever teeing off. Absolute joke of a driving range during warm-up, more divot damage than grass to hit from. After the heavy rains during Christmas and New Years, we expected soft conditions even with the week of sunshine. The tee boxes and fairways are mostly lush and level, greens are just okay. Fairway & green side bunkers are trash. Full of rocks very little sand. Pace of play was exactly 5-1/2 hours and we had to wait on every single tee box. No marshalls or player assistants. Our third player quit after the 12th hole and drove back to the clubhouse and saw two groups three holes behind the next group. Told the proshop and they couldn’t have cared less. Won’t return.

Played at 11:33 on Thursday 1/8/2026. It was a bit windy, warm for the front 9 then chilly, the course had been soaked days earlier and they were still quite busy cleaning up the mess.
Tee boxes: small, crooked, variable coverage, typical Balboa
Fairways: first 5 holes wet, areas of rocks and/or sand that had washed onto the course from the rain. The rest of the course the fairways were in decent shape even though most hadn’t been mown in awhile.
Rough: long, wet, thick, hasn’t been cut. VERY difficult to locate errant shots! (It didn’t help that the guys I was paired with were consistently in the rough and looking for their ball on average 30-50 yards from where it actually was)
Bunkers: highlight! Smooth, raked, with good sand
Greens: surprisingly smooth and fast although they were soft and were littered with ball marks (my wrist is still sore from repairing other people’s damage)
POP: slow going in wet tough conditions (felt like an 8 hour round but was just under 5)
Recommendation: wait til it dries out and they can mow.

Played 1-8-26 for $37 walking as a foursome and finishing in a little under four hours. Tee boxes were okay, decent coverage with some having some bare spots, mostly level with some divot damage on par threes. Fairways were in good shape, green and lush with minimal roll out, some very minor small bare spots in some with very nice lies. Rough was mostly in good condition with some minor bare areas playing between 1-3 inches and very lush. Was in one greenside bunker that had a good layer of sand and in good condition. Greens were the best part of the course. They were smooth, rolling at medium pace and playing semi-soft. Fun semi challenging layout that's mostly flat with a few elevation changes on both sides.

First time playing this course on Wed. Jan 7th. It is really tough getting a tee time at this course, which should have tipped me off when I noticed some tee times open up several days before we played. There was a warning stating that it would be walking only on Mon and Tues but nothing for Wednesday. When we checked in we were told it was walking only and that we should have been notified by email, but I was not.

The whole course had standing water from fairways to rough. Luckily I wore waterproof shoes or else my feet would have been soaked through. The greens were mushy and held footprints when you walked on them. The greens are on the smaller side.

This course would be nice if it was dry. I recommend not playing this course after a good rain.

1/8/26 Thursday morning 10:30 walk-on. Was hoping to find a hidden gem.....instead got a 18 hole mole hill/gopher hole mine field dodge! Should have known from lack of cars in the parking lot something was off. These are not fairways just a mowed down variety of weeds. Absolutely FLAT 18 hole track, maybe 1 bunker per hole ( sand is very good, fluffy even!), Lakes on 9 holes but only came into play 1-2 times. Greens are in good condition actually, rolling fast with very reasonable slope all very small targets. Carts in good condition w/newer GPS, club dip w/ball washer and cooler mounted on carts! Cleat cleaner and ice maker soon? Even though the golf disappointed, you gotta see the new shipping container turned bar/snackbar/ range ball dispenser setup! 6700 yds. played by myself in under 4hrs.Bring ur kidney belt.

Knollwood CC could be really good, yet chooses not to...

Attempted to play Knollwood CC today and had to walk off after 3 holes of golf. It took 1 hour and 48 minutes to play 3 holes, this was unbelievable. Didn't even know this was possible. I think we waited more than 25 minutes between shots. I have never dealt with this during a round of golf.

The tee off time was 15 minutes late and the course was log jammed with players that were Professional Horizontal Marble players. I have never seen so many people on a course, and golfing in such a horrific manner to add. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone of Golf. Our playing partners' golf cart even broke down and required replacement off the first fairway, yikes. We also waited 10 minutes at the grill trying to get service but no one was there to help us, but allegedly it was open.

This course and it's management failed their costumers miserably today. Won't be playing here again anytime soon.

The course was in really nice shape inspite of being an institutional failure. Tee boxes, fairways, and rough were very nice. And the greens were incredibly nice. Rolling fast and pure.

What a shame this course has become! I hope they fix their tee time scheduling and service perspectives. Because it's a quality course that is very fun to play. Now it's the home of 8 hour rounds of golf and terrible service!

Walked from the white tees today with the grandson, teeing off just before 8:00 am. The range was closed in the morning but was open when we were finishing. They sent us out as a twosome. It was a slow day, with us finishing in 4:50. Part of that was because it was cart path only for carts. The course was crowded. It looked like the ladies' club was teeing off at 8:00 am and was still sending groups out when we made the turn 2.5 hours later. There were three groups waiting on tee on the par three third when we made the turn, so it was probably slower after us.

The course was as wet as I have ever seen it, even though it had been several days since the last rain. The fairways were really shaggy at the start but they were mowing them around us. One problem was that some of the fairways were still flooded in part so they cannot mow them entirely. The right side of the #9 in the landing area and the left side of the #18 beyond the cross bunker were two examples. There was evidence of a flood from the restroom building next to the 13th tee extending about 150 yards diagonal down the hole and ending in the middle of the fairway. There was still water pooling in that fairway. As would be expected, the rough was gnarly and wet. We had to search hard to find our balls and the grandson lost a couple. The bunkers are in bad shape with erosion areas in some and pools of water in others. I hit out of one and it was hard pan.

The good news was the tees were okay and the greens were great. The greens were quite quick and running smooth. Even with the damp conditions, I found the course playable. I was only in bad conditions off the tee a couple of times. We did not need to play lift and clean. I had a good time. That said, I would give the course a few days to dry out though if I had a choice where to play.

Took a chance and played today. In short, it was the trudge in the mud. The greens were nice but the rest was anything from damp to wet to standing water to the aforementioned mud. No power carts at this time. Give it a week. Wouldn't be reasonable to seriously rate it before that. If they are offering carts again, that will be a clue.
