played last Friday 8/1 and got there about 4:30 and headed out. the course was in good shape and the goose crap was minimal and no coot droppings. the greens were and about 5 of them were stamped, which isn't as bad as when they aerate them, its only little holes. the pace of play was good till the the back nine and we caught up to the local PGA pros who took forever on every shot, so we skipped 2 holes and got in the 18 overall. the staff is still very courteous and helpful. the course is a great value at twilight at 16.00 to walk and pace of play was good overall... nice way to end a week. if you need a drink at the turn the best value is a mixed drink in the big red cup like a vodka OJ which is only 3.25 compared to a beer for 3.75 or more... JFYI

this rating was for a weekday twilight after 5pm with a cart. we had tried to get on 3 other places and when we called they were open and ready.. so I thought the cart would get us around quicker. the couse played very well as there was small breeze and few players out there.. the sand was baked in, like it had been water and crusted over and not raked out, luckily I didn't sample it, my partner however tested them for me...lol the only thing that was kinda bad was the goose crap.. lots and lots near the greens, its cool seeing honkers around the bay area but those boys can crap up a storm... we didn't catch anyone till like the 12th hole and got in all but 2holes so that was good. 15mins more and we may have gotten it in...lol the twilight was like 18 and with the cart she split the cost, so it was like 24.50 which was great. the clubhouse there is very nice and the snacks like calamari was excellent. they have a great chip and put area with lots of ungulations and a great driving range... the wind can blow if the fog is in in sf. and the play on weekends can be slow too, but for getting out after like 2/3pm its a great deal and play is quicker... walking has only one hill in the front nine which isn't bad and the rest is flat... the layout is interesting and bad shots can be found and played without much problem... they have a world class tennis facility there too so if your wife plays or want to just hang out theres stuff to watch and the clubhouse is huge.

played 8/9, 6am start so pace was decent - two groups went off before us, but only waited a few times, we were a 3some, played in just under 4 hrs. typical muni feel in terms of conditioning, reasonably good but not great; greens were often bumpy, but fairly consistent speeds (mostly slow). bunkers were heavy and wet, but a few looked like they had been watered and not raked (ie sierra cement). one big minus was that ~1/2 of the teeboxes were grossly off level at the back tees, to the point that you can't find a flat spot to tee off of. One of the tees on the 1st par 5 on the back was actually on a several degree upslope, which was bizarre. agree with other reviewer, hard course to play first time as there are a lot of blind tee shots and it's not obvious standing on the tee where to aim (the tiny pictures on the scorecard are not much help.) i'd guess that they did some remodeling of fairway bunkers at some point, many of them encroach significantly onto the fairway, such that the smart shot is often to aim away from the inside corner of the dogleg. a whole lot of dogleg rights that can tempt longer hitters to bite off the corners, but can't get into too much trouble off the fairway, so scores to be had. definitely helped that there was a course ranger in a large cart offering rides up the hill to 7 and 8 (i think) even caught a ride back down.
also a full, lighted/covered range which looked nice (but i wasn't that interested in beating balls at 530 in the morning)
but hey, can't really complain if you're not paying a lot, overall good value at $33 walking for a non SC resident. plays better than shoreline imho.

this is an ok course. played it for the first time, and had a hard time knowing where to hit the ball as many of the greens were hidden and not alot of signs. undergoing construction when i played it.

played 1/13 on a cold 46* day with a breeze. the course was in great shape and the greens were faster than normal due to the cold and on the back nine had a few bumps near the cup, other than that it was in really good condition... play was a little slow due to the cold I'm thinking. there were very few coots, geese on the course as last time the crap from them was horrible. for anyone in the southern San Jose area this is a great course with some good challenging holes. has a great driving range and a huge putting green area with lots of ungulations as you will need see at least 1/2 the greens have split levels in them... the bar and food area are awesome and the staff there very helpful. the carts have no GPS and the score cards don't show all the hazards, so down loading a yardage book from here on golfwits is the best thing to do, and its free... I used mine and it helps allot. I have played this course 3 times lately and course knowledge is a good thing. there are some tricky bunkers you have to carry or stay away from in order to get a good score..
my round today was the 1st time in a yr I have lost a ball, hit the back of the green on a par 3 and bounced and rolled into water..
if it had been warmer that wouldn't have happened, cost me a 6 on that hole...ouch
ps. the cart girl out there is a 10 boys....and she is very nice she made a special trip all the way back to the bar to get the other 2 guys shots of brandy...that was awesome....

played the afternoon and got in all 18, course is tricky if you haven't played it, as some holes you had to know where to lay up and it makes a difference, my ball had goose s*** a number of times on it and that sucked....lol overall a great layout and facility with a helpful staff and good prices....I look forward to playing there again....

Played this course a couple times in the last month. Love this course. It has lots of doglegs is a fun course to play. I don't know about the greens. One time it was firm and medium fast the next it was slow and spongy.

First time playing here. Broke 90 for my first time also. Other than some of the extreme doglegs, could have scored better. Would most definitely play this course again and is highly worth a visit.

This is the first course I broke 100 on and its a fun challenge! Memorable is the 2nd hole, a straight long par 4 with water on the approach. I parred this bad boy with a 200 yard stinger to 8 feet so of course I loved it.
I three putted alot but still scored well for me (97) and I like the doglegs & fairway bunkers.
A busy course due to the cool practice green which is super fast and allows chipping.

One of the better munis in the area. Great wide open course, that can be challenging if the wind is up.

This course is okay if you're looking for an inexpensive place to play and you have low expectations of course quality.

Lots of blind shots from off tees, and also to the greens.

Played Sat 4/9/05. Course is really looking good. I expected soggy conditions as we had some heavy rains late in the week. But the tee boxes, fairways and greens were perfect. No mud, no slop. I was also suprised by the pace of play. Santa Clara is notorious for slow play. But we finished right at 4 hours. The winds were up a little, which can make it interesting. I did record my first 300 yard drive. Yes, it was down wind but I'll take it. Hope these good conditions contine as I will be back soon.

I've been here a few times: played twice and used practice facilities once. Several nice things about Santa Clara GC: 1)Location! - It's about 10 minutes door-to-door from San Jose airport, 2)Practice facilities - Nice lighted driving range and putting green (haven't seen a trap/chipping green), 3)Layout - nothing over the top, but some challenging holes, 4)Price... very reasonable. 5)Accomodating staff - they try to work with you to get you on the course when you have time. Now, the down-side: 1)LOTS of play - usually slow and need to plan ahead to get a reasonable tee time, 2)Course condition - can be ragged (I have to admit I haven't been there in over a year, but I doubt if things have changed much, 3) Small parking lot - may have to park down the street. All-in-all not bad for an urban course, especially in the "high-rent" district Santa Clara has become.
