This course seems to play a little tougher than it's slope rating. When I asked about the courses rating, I was told that lots of people say the same thing. My only gripe about the course is the driving range. You can't hit anything over 165 yards so you'll tee off the first hole (par 5) cold.

First time at Elkins. Fun course, worth the green fee. Fairways very narrow - easy to run through into rough. Greens were really funky - bumpy, slow with grooves all over. Not sure if thats aeration or what. Nice layout with great views.

Got out at 8:45 on a Saturday morning. The course.....Excellent. I have never seen Elkins in this type of condition mid summer. The new irrigation system is providing great results, as the fairways were in great muni shape. Looks like they are trying to toughen up the course, as they are growing in the rough. Most of the fairways are ~30% narrower. The greens were soft and smooth, but very slow. Pace of play was awful, took 3:15 to play the front 9 and 2:55 to play the back.

Played the morning of 5/9/08. The sun was out at 7:00AM, but when we teed off at 7:30AM, the fog rolled in. It stayed cool the entire round but the course is in good shape. The greens are pretty smooth, the fairways in good condition, and the rough is trimmed down. Heard some of my partners complain about the bunkers, "no sand", & "feels like your on concrete". Greens are receptive but downhill putts are tough. As always, the burger & chips at the end of the round are excellent.

Played 36 holes on Monday the 5th in less than 7 hours. The course is in great shape and the greens have come back very nice. Now that the greens have come back, can we get a mower on them! A little slow for me but some higher handicapers may like it. Great couse worth the greens fee and i nice walking course too.

a fun course will water coming into play on a lot of holes. Another course where the wind come definitely alter your game. The 9th and 17th holes are two of my favorite holes on this course. As with most courses you can expect a longer round on weekends.

I teed off today at 7:15am, done at 12:20pm not bad for a Saturday round of golf. I have never played this course and the over all feel is that it has a regular/local following due to its distance away from LA. Nice course, good use of the land what little they have. You have to work your shots right to left and left to right. This is not a grip and rip course, you have some par 5's that you can only hit 200 yards off the tee and then navigate 240+ to the green. I played with 3 great guys and they helped me understand the shots needed to play here. Yes the tee boxes and greens are close togeter and you may hear a group yell or hear some noise. What do you do when playing Rancho park and some G4 flys by landing at Santa Monica airport? Remember golf is an activity that lends its self to social interaction, there will be laughing, crying, whining etc. Work on your mental aspect, focus on what you are trying to do, hit a ball not moving. Can this game be more simpler and yet soo difficult? Lighten up.

Played twilight a few weeks ago, took over 5 and a half hours because of a group of 16 or 20 friends of the people that work there were consistently a hole behind in their lead group with no regard to speed up, they were loud and rude around adjoining tee boxes as well, we only saw the course marshal once during the whole round nothing was done to speed up play. I have since emailed the director regarding this issue with no response, I wouldn't play there again for free.

Played Friday, 04/40/08, first twilight time at 2 p.m. Followed their afternoon skins game which included several groups of five. Ended playing the front nine twice to avoid the crowds. Greens were punched about two weeks ago and they were a little bumpy. Could use another week. Looks like they used a walk behind mower on the greens--not as smooth as the ride on, which really rolls out the greens better. Give it another week or two, and Elkins will be outstanding.

Did I say back, right when I meant back, left? OOPS! I saw no beer cart girl and, yes I did forget to mention the dollar spot on 15 green. That green is in shade all winter and every year it seems to get a little fungus. Not bad, but it is there. I didn't notice that the greens were at all bumpy, maybe those other two guys had jerky putts.

745 tee time. Was a little chilly til around 930, ended up being a really nice day. The greens were fast. some bad spots on some of the greens which made the ball hop skip and jump. Overall the course is in great shape. Like kviser said sand was being added turf was being patched on 12. they are making improvements a little bit at a time.

kviser got exercised about the hex-patch job the groundskeepers made on the back LEFT portion of #9 green ...... they laid-in the hex-cut sod point-to-point instead of butting the edges together for better coverage of the spot they were attempting to repair. He forgot to mention the 'dollar spot' on a few greens on the back side. But hey, all that and a fine lookin' beer cart girl still can't make me putt any better. Another fine round with a putting exhibition (LOL!) ---- I guess I wanna use all the regulation putts they assign to a round. 36 putts on my card is gettin' real old .....

Played with kilt1iron and grumpy1 on President's Day, February 18, 2008. The course was getting new sand in the bunkers. I got to try the new sand on 18; it was soft and fairly light--not tour grade, but reasonably nice. Everything looked lush and not overly wet. There is an approximately 5' X 6' repair on the new #9 green in the back, right portion of the green. The repair could be better, but at least it is mostly out of the way. Other than that all was fine there.

Previous posts are right on...Elkins is in great shape (considering it is winter). The greens were as fast as I have seen them. It was great to play with the rebuilt 9th green, they did a nice job. You can see the landscape improvements being made throughout the course. Keep up the good work. Elkins remains one of the best "values" around.

The course is in good shape. New water system completed 6 months ago and the ninth green is now open. I play early, usually tee off before 8:00, so pace of play is good, 4 1/2 hrs.

Had not played Elkins Ranch is quite some time. I used to live in Saugus, which made it an easy choice. It's always been in "Fair" shape...nothing too spectacular, nothing to "write home" about. But - I have been playing there for over twenty years, so - I know the track pretty well.

But I must say...I played on Monday 12/10 - and Elkins is in the best shape that I've ever seen it in! The last two times I played there, there were temporary greens and the place was sort of a mess. Not on Monday. The greens were fast and rolled true, they held all shots well. The fairways were surprisingly lush (too many tight-lies were always a complaint of mine before) and green....it's become a pretty nice golf course.

One "blotch" on the day, which could not be avoided (I'm actually glad to see such activity on any course...it shows that they are working to improve!) - - there was a lot of work going on around the bunkers around the green on #18. It looks like they are completely re-doing the bunkers...and that can only be a good thing.

Keep up the good work, Elkins!

Played on Friday, 11-16-07 and Sunday, 11-18-07. Had a tee time for 11:20 on Sunday, but had to let a few groups go out first as our 3rd guy was running late. Starter sent out groups as they arrived and got us in 30 minutes after our official start. The course never looked this good. Lush conditions nearly everywhere, good quality sand and smooth greens.

Now the bad: Groups of five, not a lot of them, and also encroachment of kikuyugrass into the greens. The new green on 9 has some kind of buried plastic edging around its perimeter. I know this because part of it is sticking up above ground level in front of the green--BAD.

By the way, they are doing a Friday skins game for less than the regular rate,; I'll have to check it out in a couple of weeks.

In response to the previous post. I have been playing golf at elkins ranch for the last 3 years. I call elkins my home course, and feel very fortunate to have been able to not only learn how to play golf, but get close to all the guys that work there. I've watched as this golf course has been able to overcome numerous obstacles and can also understand how the course conditions can be considered at time subpar. With that that in mind, never in my life has the customer service been anything less than fabulous. I know that at twilight time all golfers are informed that carts are due back at a certain time. At some golf courses this is a flexible rule, and at others this is absolute. At this golf course efforts are being taken to make this rule an absolute. The previous poster is no different than any other person on a saturday or sunday who happens to play the twilight card and come up short. Twi light golf costs less for a reason, that being, you may not finish your round. I've watched as this for the last 3 years and this happens every time. At this golf course there are no lights avialable for carts to be cleaned and put away, that is why the rule is being enforced. The previous poster knew exactly what time the carts were due! He, not the employees at the course was in the wrong. This golf course should be commended for the efforts that are being taken to improve the playing conditions, and although they will take time, they will continue to improve.

I played the course yesterday (11/11) with two friends and teed of at 12:15 to take advantage of the twilight play that begins at Noon. The overall course conditions were better than last I played about a year ago but the purpose of this review is to comment on the horrible customer service that we received. Upon checking in at the proshop we were casually told as we were walking out to get our carts that they needed to be back in by 4:45 which we didn’t see as a problem being that we would have 4 ½ hours to complete our round. Due to moderately slow play, we reached the 18th tee at about 4:45 at which time an employee (pro?)from the proshop came riding towards us telling us that we had to stop play and bring in our cart. I asked if we could just finish our round being that we were on 18 and there was plenty of daylight left to play the hole. He proceeded to tell us that we could drive in our carts and then walk back out to complete the round. When we resisted his request, he began yelling at us from across an adjacent fairway to bring in our cart. I have been playing golf for over 20 years and have never been asked to bring in my cart during my round nor have I ever had a golf course pro yell at my group during a round. If we had been on any other hole I would have understood bringing in the cart due to the impending darkness, but not when we’re on 18. It appears that the staff at Elkin’s Ranch is more concerned about getting home 15 minutes early then providing good customer service. If good customer service is important to you, I would consider finding other courses to play.

Played here on Sunday, 10/28/07. Started out at 1 p.m. as a 2-some. Play was backed up on the first few holes and we joined the 2-some ahead of us. Pace of play seemed to pick up a little. I noticed that several greens had incursions of kikuyu grass in them--not just a little encroachment, but larger areas throughout the greens. With a little effort, this could be eliminated. The new #9 green has turned out nice: large, 3-lobed and tiered towards the rear lobe. Sand lines the left side approach and looks like a grass bunker type of collection short and right. It seems to play longer than before, but that may be an illusion due to the fact that I'm so used to the old temp green. We only played the front 9 twice to avoid the crowds and work on our game. Also played 10 and 18 before it got dark.

Played Elkins on Monday 10/8 at twilight. Fairways were in the best shape that I have seen them in a while(watering out there..some real wet spots). Greens were in OK shape and were slower than I have seen them. Some tee boxes needed leveling. #9 green is now open and makes it a little bit tougher of a hole. The more I play #8 the more I give it credit for being a difficult par 5. Pace of play was good for a Monday. Hot weather and no cart girl=problems. Great views of the surrounding mountains. I enjoy tighter courses for me which challenges shot making and not being able to rely so much on length off of the tee which is what Elkins brings to the table.

Played on the Sept. 2nd. in a 100 degree heat.
I've played this course about 6 or 7 times but not recently and when I'd read the recent reviews I felt that perhaps I was in for an adventure. I was pleasently surprised. I've played the course mostly in winter and early spring when the fariways were quite thin and the greens were spotty. On Sunday I thought the course was as nice as I'd ever seen it. Yes, there is some other grasses creeping onto the greens but over all I thought they were quite good. There were some seriously over watered areas just off the fairways but you can take an standing water or unplayable lie and move on. Fairways were as lush as I'd ever seen them. The bunkers were not stellar but the one I hit out (thankfully only one) had something resembling sand in it, and I hat out of it nicely. Some tee boxes need some serious work and they do have some drainage issue but I was expecting a disaster and thought thing were considerably better than that.
Remember, we're not comparing this course to Tierra Rejada or Angeles National in the area of conditioning. Think more Knollwood or Vista Valencia. I would certainly pick this course in it's present conditions over those two.
BTW the 9th green is now OPEN!

I had been a fan of Elkins, but I must agree with other postings. Not completing the 9th hole is ridiculous. We played, on a Sat. in over 5 hours. Am I wrong, or did they also add a hidden water pond on 5th, have not seen that before... Still cheap, so you get what you pay for.

All Greens and Sandtraps need to be re-built. Greens have two if not three different types of grass and very bumpy. The sandtraps were shallow with no chance to pick-up sand with the ball.

I have always enjoyed escaping to Elkins, but lately it seems like it has turned into Westlake Village GC. Played a 5+ hour round on Sunday and was almost hit by errant balls multiple times on nearly every hole.
The greens are too soft and the bunkers are too hard. #9 green is still not open after more than a year, and that's too long.
It pains me to say it, but I can play better courses for less money a lot closer to home and that is what I am going to do.

Today we played Elkins Ranch in Fillmore. It is a great location with
views of the valley. It is set in the hills and is quiet. A few years back
several greens were replaced and things were looking good. I
was surprized today that the course has let many of the greens be
over run with kakuya grass. It is on the verge of being out of control
and green replacments are very expensive. Its hard to believe that
management would let this get out of control.

Played Saturday, 4/14/07. Friendly and personable service from starter to snack bar. Number 9 green still a work in progress, possibly another 6 to 8 weeks before it is opened to play according to starter. The temporary green is rolling better than ever. The course has never looked so green--is it the new irrigation system or just plain old good weather? Tee boxes, fairways, rough, traps and greens all in as good shape as I have ever seen. Lots of poa annua everywhere, including the greens. Putts were somewhat slower than normal, but not too bumpy. It was a fairly slow round, 4 hrs. 45 minutes, but probably typical for a weekend.

Except for the temporary green on #9, the course was in slendid shape. Thought the greens were way too slow, although they were generally smooth. Fairways, rough, bunkers, everything was in good condition. Always a pleasure to play this old style course devoid of houses and distractions.

Played 2/4. Started the round at 9:00 and finished in 4hr-10min. They increased the greens fees by $4, so a weekend round with cart is now $47, which is still one of the best deals around (IMHO). Like many of the area courses that do not overseed, the severe cold weather has not been kind to the fairways and they are not in the best of shape. However, they were better than I expected as I did not have a bad lie out of any of my fairway shots. Typical Elkins greens. #9 is still playing to a temp green and it appears that they are still months away from having the new green complex ready for play.

Played Elkins on 12/3. Got out at 9:20 and finished the round in 4.25 hours, not bad for a Sunday round. While Elkins may not be in pristine condition, it is still one of your best courses for the money. Fairways, rough, and Tee's average. The greens were a bit bumpy, but not bad at all. I will be back in a few weeks to play the course again. Looks like the re-build of the #9 green may not be complete for another 4-6 months.

Low cost, it is winter, but this course needs work. Holidays brings out the 4 times per year golfer, balls being sprayed all over. The greens are slow and bumpy, fairays are thin, some great views from 3 and 16 tee boxes.

Our group played on Sat 12/23 at noon. GREENS were in great shape. Our group was really suprised about the greens. Only bad green was #16(108 yds) par 3 lots of old divots and #9 is a temp green. Tight driving course on several holes and if you are a long hitter driver can actually get you in trouble on certain holes. This is a good place for you if you can hit long irons off of the tee well. Fairways were something to be desired and tee boxes were OK. We played a 4 hour 30 minute round and round was worth the green fee. Alot of dogleg holes which are cool- wish more courses had these type of holes. #15 is a tough little driving hole . Beware of the good ol' boys marshalls as my buddy got yelled at walking through construction area by putting green.

Finally got a chance to get out and play a round and went to Elkins on 10/23.... The irrigation project is coming along nicely, #9 is still playing to a temp green and it looks like it will stay that way for several months to come. Overall, the course is in typical condition (good greens & fairways, & average T-boxes) and is, by far, one of the best values in the area.

Played 09/07 and place had some heavy construction going on. 14 and 15 were all tore up, green on 14 had several guys working around it who didnt even flinch as we shot up to the green, didnt hit anyone though...
Customer service was as good as it gets, friendly and helpfull and warned us of the construction and rough spots were to be found on every hole. Told us to just come in after our round and we could play another for free if we wanted. On the 7th hole sprinklers came on right next to our carts but before they could get soaked an employee drove his truck right in the way of the spray and drove our carts up and out of reach of the sprinkler. Now thats service.

Layout is great, grass is green, sand traps are compact which is a plus but hardly a hazard, fairways are narrow, greens are smooth and break fast.

Overall, this place is the best Ive been to for the money, once construction is finished Ill use this place as my regular course.

Teed off at 080 on 8/12/06. Even though it was quite busy we got around in about 4 1/2 hours (a twosome in front of us was very slow!). Considering the construction effort going on at the course I thought it was in good shape. One temporary green on hole #9 and a large "GUR" in the fairway on hole #1. Other than that just sporadic areas which didn't affect play in my opinion. The green were in good shape and ran pretty fast and true. The one area that could use improvement is the sand in the bunkers--it was wet and seemed very compacted--fortunately I didn't get in it this day. Overall, a good course in good shape.

The construction bothered me on 1 & 9, but for $30 to play on the weekend this is the best course around. This was my first time at this course. I played alot of irons from the tee's. Next time I will be attacking this course a little more although I'm glad I got this "feeling out" round under my belt.

Played the course on July 3rd, and it was in decent shape. I have played the course before and really like the layout, but they are doing a lot of work on the course which can be a little distracting at times, but overall will improve the course. I will be back as it is easy to get a tee time and the rates are good, but with all the other courses in the area I will wait till the construction is done.

Played this morning at 6:15. Teed off on the back; played it in 2 hrs, but when we made the turn, it was a complete disaster and it took us over 3 hours to play that side. They could use some help in managing sending groups off on the front and back.
The course was in pretty good condition. The greens were a bit bumpy, but they were rolling real true. The definition between the fairways and the rough are much better than in the past and the rough was long enough to penalize you if you hit too many errant tee shots (I did today). There is a temp green on number 9 and they are doing some construction around the course, but at $43 to ride on a weekend, you can't beat the price. There are many other courses around the county that are more expensive than this on the weekend that I would say rate the same quality. Play Elkins now before the summer heat comes and I think you will be pleased with the value.

Worst shape I have seen this course in 15yrs. Like they are trying to ruin it. Flowers in fairways, muddy, and a terrible course marshal.

Played on saturday March 4, the course is in good shape, although a little wet from the rain on Friday. It appears they are getting ring disease on a few of the greens. Talked with Clyde in the pro shop, he said starting March 13 they will begin aeration of the greens, with a reduced greens fee. Also saw what appears to be an alternate green being constructed in the 9th fairway. We had a 6:08 tee time and finished in under 4 1/2 hours. Great for a saturday. As always the staff very helpful and friendly.

Played Sat. 2/5 & Sun. 2/6. Finished in 5 1/2 hours on first day and 5 yesterday. The greens tend to be extremely fast and the fairways and first cut could use some manicuring and maintenance. Overall, however - it's one of the best values in LA County and the views in the Santa Paula Valley are breathtaking. The water on the front and back are not to be taken for granted. Low handicappers will find this a challenging enough course and the high-handicappers keep coming back for the hamburger on the 19th (rated best golf course burger in LA County)

Played 12/30. Got off at 7:30 and finished the round in 4hr-10mins. The green on #6 is open, but the grass is very thin. They are starting to make some improvements at the entrance along #11 by cutting down the brush and landscaping. It will look nice when completed. Elkins continues to be a great value and don't forget the cheeseburger.

Played 12/24. Seemed to get out before it got crowded by mid-morning. It was a little bit windy which made the winding, back-and-forth holes a little challenging to play. Good course management will help you score well and avoid the big number. The water that comes into play on the frontside make the rewarding and the elevation changes on the backside makes the nines different.

Played Friday morning. I think we were third off and got around in 3-1/2 hours. Greens in good shape, looks like they have a shallow veri-cut, they were firm but held shots. Fairways generally good some thin areas, sand OK some thin spots where you can hit the mud underneath. Fairways OK some thin areas. Boxes OK. For the money you can't beat the experience. Worth the trip out. Only complaint (not for our group but for those behind us) was the fact that the group behind us got 2 full holes behind and I did not see a Marshall move them along.

Nice track - great value.

Played in a tournament on 8/19/05. Temp green on number 8 is just the fairway cut even shorter than normal (the new green they are working on looks nice). I like the way they have rerouted the course; it flows a little better. Some of the tee boxes were pretty hacked up, but the fairways were in good shape and the greens were in really nice shape. Elkins is a nice place to play, especially for the price.

Wow! This is not the "Old Elkins" that we remember of years back, it has been years since we last played it and have the overall conditions ever improved dramatically! This is not Moorpark C.C., but it is really in good shape and a deal at $30 weekends, we will be back again and again!

Elkins is in it's best summer condition that I have seen in the last few years. A few low lying areas are too soggy, but that is to be expected when the rest of the ocurse is being kept green. The new green on #8 looks to be complete, they just need to finish the area around the putting surface. Looks to be at least another 6-8 weeks to completion. When Elkins is in this condition, it is one of the best bargins around.

Played on 5/6 and had a 6:08 tee time, they sent out from both the front and back nines that early which is ok, but then they don't book any open spots for the groups starting on the back to finish up their round. What a joke it took a little under 2 hours to play the first nine and almost 3 1/2 to finish the second. Great course management there. Other than that the course was in decent shape. My only complaint would be that there are no signs set up in the 8th fairway past 125 yards out for distance to the temp green which makes it hard to go for it in 2.

Played Sunday morning 5/1. Fairly good conditions remain. The greens could have been better....some of my putts looked like the ball was 4-wheeling over the green. Could have used a cut. The remake of the 8th green is 4 months behind schedule, still playing as a Par 5 to a temp green. They are not sure of an ECD. A good value course compared to the other Ventura and LA City muni courses.

Played 4/9 and was pleasantly pleased by overall condition of course. Fairways and greens were in decent shape and you could see the rain in February and March had helped out the course. I thought the 8th green was a good green for the par 5 hole, so it will be interesting to see what will be a result of the work that they are doing.
We teed off early (before 9) and was able to go around in about 4.5 hours. It should have been faster, but group ahead of us was playing from the wrong tees and constantly scattering tee shots to opposite side of the fairways and greens. The marshall did drive around but didn't speak to the group at all. I know that they finished the back nine at least one hole the group ahead of them; at the turn they were able to catch up, but by the 5th hole on the backside they were again a hole behind.

May be the best I have ever seen Elkins Ranch. Greens were great, consistant speeds, smooth, and decent speed. Tee Boxes were significantly improved since my last outings. As previously mentioned, they have bull dozed the #8 green and are playing a temp green in the fairway. Can't see the new green being in place for ~ 4-6 months. Don't even try to go for the flag on the temp green, nothing will hold.

A great value, get out before it starts drying out.

ALERT! Green #8 no longer in existance! Let's see what they put back in it's place, but it will be a long time before it is rebuilt. Actually, the TEMPORARY green putted OK! They should overseed the TEMP green, expand it to the width of the fairway, give it a real green manicuring, and it would work fine while we wait ...

I am playing the course more often, and the conditions are pretty good. The greens out on the course are a bit fuzzy, nothing like the practice greens. The pace of play in the afternoon needs attention by the marshall ... who drives around but has no control of slow groups.

I implore others who play the course frequently to mention your displeasure of slow play as you are paying your greens fees. Suggest that they get stricter on the speed of play SOONER, keeping everyone on a maximum 4.5 hour round.

The course was in great condition despite the recent rain we had. The fairways are in good condition because of the great run off. It has been quite breezy lately, but tolerable. They have changed a couple of holes around since I last played there, but it has improved the congestion it used to have starting on the 2nd hole. Now play moves along much better.

Played 12/12. Greens are the best part of this course, but some were a bit bumpy. As Elkins does not over seed, the winter fairways tend to thin out, but still yields a pretty decent lie. I love the layout and views of this low priced course, worth the $$. We will be back soon.

Not in horrible shape. The greens have recently recovered from being aerated so the typical "fillmore" break isn't there a lot of the times. They are fairly smooth for the most part, and consistent speed wise. One green (#16 short par 3) is beat up big time. Lots of grapefruit sized dead spots- fungus? Overall in normal shape for this time of year. Fairways decent, rough low, and the only thing above average and was near perfect was the sand. In the 6 bunkers I was in not one of them was junk.

Played 10/22. Elkins has a weekday "play all day" package for $40 that includes cart and warm-up balls. Course is really coming around and is in fantastic shape. The course is lush and the greens were in great shape. The course was still a little soft from the recent storms and #3 had some run off from the hills come down into the fiarway, but it did not come into play. They allowed carts onto the fairways and we noticed a fair amount of "new" damage from carts in the softer fairways when we played thru for the second round. C-mon guys, treat the course with some respect. A great way to spend $40 and get in at least 36 holes, and the double cheeseburger in between rounds is dynamite. :) Be careful when you ask for a draft (they have added a full service bar), the bar maid has a habit of scraping the foam from the top of your cup with her finger!!! :(

Played here for the first time in a about 4 years on Friday afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised! Couse is in great shape even after taking the summer heat. Fairways and greens generally good. Greens are soft to spongy, so there is no ball release, just go for the flag. You just can't beat the price for the quality of the course. It is not a Rustic, Tierra or Sterling, but I would rate it at the top end of most Muni's in the area. Now that is is starting to cool off it is worth the trip over the hill for the T.O/Simi/Valley golfers. BTW I also got around in 2 3/4 hours.

Played 8/29 and found the course challenging and in very good shape... some of the greens had sand spots on them but generally they were subtle in their contours and hard to read. It was interesting to see how close the fires came to this course. This is a great value for $42 on the weekend... The only downside is that due to golfers that can not stay in their own fairways... balls go flying in every direction. Be aware when someone yells FORE!

Played 8/29 at 7:08. Course is in good overall condition and at $42 riding on a weekend, Elkins is a very good deal. Course is still very green for late August. Fairways and greens were good, while the tee boxes continue to be sub-standard. Look forward to coming back for another round.

On a side note, we had three deer (a doe and 2 young ones) come down from the burnt hillsides and walk to within 40 feet of us to drink some standing water and eat the green grass on the course. We putted out on the 7th and tee’d off the 8th while they stayed in very close proximity to us, until the marshall chased them off the course. Also saw 2 red tailed hawks soaring the skies above the back nine.

Played Monday morning, 08/09/04, with a 06:45 tee time. I walked the course as a single and played 18 holes which took exactly 3 hours.

About 7 cars in the parkng lot when I arrived. No one on the two putting greens. These practice greens appeared to be in really nice shape with alot of different contours to challenge the golfer while warming up.

Pro shop appears to be well-stocked with the usual paraphernalia, well organized, clean, and a friendly person running the front desk. I was taken care of in a timely manner and all questions were asked, as this was my first-time out to Elkins.

It was a pleasant course to walk, especially this morning. None to a very mild breeze. The one thing I did notice during my course of play was the dampness of the tee boxes, fairways, and greens. The grounds crew had one or two sections sprinklers activated on the front nine, and I noticed later in the morning the same on the back nine. The sand traps/bunkers were wet (not soaked), but I found it no problem escaping from the two I visited this morning.

There was no pressure behind me or slow traffic ahead of me. It was basically a nice three hour play and walk outing this morning.

The fairways and ruff areas were in decent condition (not excellent or great, but decent). There were a couple of greens and fairways that could use some attention, as these were in a state of bareness (burn?).

If you get thirsty, there are a number of coolers strategically positioned with water and ice.

I found the course challenging with a narrow fairway on #2, and the water hazard on #3 (the water explodes beautifully from the tee box on #3). I used a #5 wood from the #7 tee box and placed my ball just below the pin. From the tee box at #9 a water illusion exist. More of a depth of field issue here. Just aim a tad to the right of what appears to be the corner of the water and go for it. You have kind of the same deal facing you on #10 with the water hazard to your left and lots of open space to the right. There are three large oak trees facing you from the tee box at #10. Aim at either of these giants and launch. You should be in a good position to strike for the pin.

The back nine has more altitude or ascending terrain. You'll have to watch out for the water hazard between #12 and #13 (No, I didn't loose any balls here. Just saying to be careful! I lost a ball on #3 though). #13
is a great hole. You can hit your driver just to the left of the sand trap down range. It will strike a decending fairway at this point and roll towards the green. Easy PW to the green. #17 is their signature hole with your very own launch platform (kinda like the #5 signature hole at Lake Elizabeth Golf course, but not as narrow of a fairway). #18 you need to be a tad on the accurate side, but after playing this hole, I think someone with a decent and accurate fade would really benefit. Other than that, there are a number of holes that allow you to "air" the ball out too.

All in all, lots of fun and enjoyed myself this morning, and thought it was worth the walking fee of $24. Just remember to bring some water to keep hydrated.

Greens are painfully slow if you're putting uphill or flat, wacth out on some of the downhill greens. Scorecards are finally changed to reflect the flip flop of holes on the front.

Course conditions are typical for most city-owned courses. As is the pace of play (i.e., SLOW). But, they layout (although relatively short) is better-than-average because of some nice elevation changes. Also, the big mature trees are nice--something lots of new courses lack. There are several ponds on the course, but most of them do not really come into play.

They've re-routed the front nine since I last played here and I think the new route makes a lot of sense.

There is a temporary tee box on no. 15 (everyone tees off from the ladies tee box), which means that there are 2 consecutive par 4s that can be reached with a good drive (i.e., about 300 yards).

Played Elkins this past weekend. Hadn't played there in a couple of years due to the slow play. Thought we would try it again. Played the front nine in less than 2 hours. But the back nine backed-up abit. Still finished the round in about 4 1/2 hours. I felt the greens were in terrible shape. Extremely slow, especially the front nine. Then on the back nine some of the greens were firmer and faster. Very inconsistent and hard to get a feel for the greens

The best word to describe Elkins Ranch is..........

SLOW

It's not a bad place to play at all. The fairways aren't the best but I have played worse. The greens are hard to read yet playable.

On the 4th and 5th hole there were 5 to 7 groups backed up. It was so bad I called the clubhouse and told them to send the marshall out to get the play back up to speed, it never happened.

Almost 6 hours after we tee'd off we finished.

We also helped a group of employees capture a 4 ft. Rattlesnake so they could take it off the course. That was most exciting part of the day.

Oh well.

Extreme Golf Scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best)

Elkins Ranch = 4.5 (thats being generous)

Peace

Elkins is starting to recover from the cold winter. The greens are the best part of the course, yet some are bumpy, some could use a cut, some had disease spots, some had bare spots, but they were firm and acceptable for the price. The traps were in very nice shape and the fairways were as expected. Many of the Tee boxes were just un-acceptable. They were a slight upgrade from a thin sand trap. You would be challanged to find a patch of grass on some of them. However, it is still a nice track and it will be well worth the $$ in a few more weeks.

First thing to note is they are playing the front half a little differently. 1,5,6,7,8,2,3,4,9. This lay out really works, and I hope they go with it more permanently!

The course is in its typical winter shape. It was raining the past few days, but the greens were surprisingly firm. There is also some greens that have a large amount of disease spots. However the ball still rolled pretty true. The fairways and rough were in decent shape, but about the same length.

Overall a great morning to play golf. We got out before their mens club tournement, so teh front half was wide open. The back half we caught up as they were letting people off both sides for the tourney, so it slowed down some. Still finished in 4.5 hours, with a 2:45 min back nine.

Played Elkins Ranch for the first time today. The course is not exactly in immaculate condition, but it's still a great course. There's one really bad green on the fron (#8) that looks like it had an unsuccessful patch job, and some greens on the back are severely speckled with poa.
But the layout is great. Really interesting holes. The course seems to have a little bit from lots of area courses. Some holes are similar to Ojai Valley Inn, some look like something from Robinson Ranch, some River Ridge and a sprinkling of Camarillo Sprongs.
Definitely a great round. The staff and the burgers can't be beat.

I played twilight ($16.00 to walk) and thought the course was in great shape. Granted, there are a few bare spots, but keep in mind, it is winter...The greens rolled well and would hold on a well hit ball. We played in under 3 1/2. They rearranged the order of the front nine also, it actually seemed to go a bit faster.

I've played this course many times and have been very satisfied. This past Sunday was absolutely terrible, however. Had an 11:45 tee time but didn't tee off until after noon and were backed up 8 people to a whole.
Three foursomes ahead there was a couple older golfers who (no exageration) took 9 strokes to reach a 165 yrd. par 3. We told the marshall who refused to do absolutely anything about it. True, the course was unbelievably backed up but this party had a whole hole open ahead of them. Took almost 5 hours to complete the front nine. Ridiculous. Course itself was in terrible shape.
Pro shop staff were cool though.

The course was not in verry good shape the greens were very Bumpy. Fairways were very thin due to not overseeding. I guess It would be more worth the money in the summer when everything is growing a littler better. But overall I would go back in the summer for the 20 dollar green fee. it is an ok practice course I would not want to play it every week. if you are just looking to hit it around and not care about the sites or length this is your course.

THe course play is tight with very poor fairways, greens always bumpy need some work. The fires came down right to the course so the greenery is al but gone. If you lost a ball up in the hills with in the last years they all rolled out cause of the fires released them. Always a fun course and I will go back.

Played on 12/29. Pretty normal conditions for Elkins. They don't overseed for the winter so the fairways are pretty brown and thin and bare in some spots. The greens were rolling pretty smoothly and were medium speed. I wish they could keep the course in a little better condition, but the layout is quite nice. It has some very challenging holes and the people who work their are helpful and nice. Overall, I think the course is a good value.

I feel this is an overlooked golf course. It's quite the drive to fillmoore though Simi Valley however the course is well worth the effort.

This course is rarely overly busy. Tee times are easy to get even on the weekends. I can't say that for any course in the SF valley or Simi Valley.

I've been playing the weekday specials that are going on until the end of the year.

36 Holes of Golf, a Cart, a Bucket of balls for $40. This week I will by my forth time with this special.

There is very light damage that was caused by the Fires. Most of the damage is in the OB areas. Usually in the evening you'll be playing golf amoung Deer and Bucks feeding near the fairways.

Course is in great condition right now. Nothing bad sticks out in my mind after today's round.

A very nice enjoyable pace, especailly for a weekend round. We finished in 4 hours almost on the dot.

Played Elkins yesterday. They are up and running! The course in general is in good condition with the usual bare spots in some of the fairways. The greens were in excellent shape. The fire appeared to have burned all around the course and adjacent to some of the tee boxes and greens.

FYI – We have not been able to contact Elkins Ranch GC or have received any information about how the course faired in relation to the firestorm.

Love this place! What a bargain for $16 walking at 1:08pm. The greens were still a little sandy/bumpy from punching done a few weeks back, but were mostly recovered and a good challenge. The course has had a few touch-ups here and there since I last played and it is still my favorite place to play.

Always like playing this course. In good shape and well worth the drive and green fees. Those that play it know what I'm talking about. Oh yeah, best Bacon Cheeseburger anywhere! A must when you play.

I was amazed by the conditions of this golf course. It was rather good as compared to a few months ago. I think this course is worth to play right now. However, pace of play is not good.

I've been playing this course a lot lately. It hasn't been too busy after 3:30 on the weekends (twilight) which means a complete round in under 3 hours. The course is still in good shape. The starter said the 15th tee should be done in about a month. Some of the other tees are thin and unlevel in spots, but those are my only complaints (well there are ball mark issues on the greens too). Good value.

The course was in pretty good shape. The 15th tee box is being rebuilt and it looks like it will be a while before it is done. Some of the tee boxes had a lot of divot damage. Fairways were green, but brown in spots. Greens were in good shape. The rough is not penalizing, but you do have a lot of trees to contend with. Played in under 4 hours on a Saturday afternoon twilight rate. Definitely worth the money.

This course has been an enjoyable one to play every time I've ever played it. Staff is cool and the rural feeling the course has rocks.

I played there in a pro-am in late april, the staff was awesome they treated us very well. I hadn't played there before, but I will be back. The course was rounding into good shape for mid spring the fairways were fine and the greens were a little inconsistant but hey, thats ok. Over all if you're looking for a new track to try check it out...........

Played on 4/12. Some thin spots in the fairways. Greens were consistent and in decent shape. Tee boxes were in fairly good shape with some obvious signs of usage. A nice course with a rural feel. The staff were very courteous. I had a nice time.

Played on Mar 1. Course is starting to get a little color back after the rain. Fairways are still real thin in spots. Greens are in decent shape, but due to differing ages in greens, some are softer and slow and others are hard and fast. Still a pretty good deal for $30 walking on the weekend.

Played a VERY slow round on 12/31/02. The course looked liked it had barely survived many freezes. Although the greens were in pretty good shape, the fairways were terrible. They tended to "meld" into the rough with short grass, bare spots, etc.
Tee boxes were very used.
Maintenance is obviously somewhat lacking at this time.
