Played Del Monte this morning with a former co-worker who was in town from Texas. The original plan was to play Poppy Hills but there was a tournament going on so we opted to Del Monte. The weather was absolutely beautiful. We tee’d off at 9:30 with a couple other locals. Course is in great shape Tee to green. Starting with the small greens that for the most part are single tier but they have just enough slope in them to keep you honest. The greens rolled smooth at a very fast pace. I played Spanish Bay last week the greens here were much much faster.

Fairways present a tight lie which is great for roll out. Still plush enough to get good contact and they were green throughout. Tee boxes were level and lush as well. I wasn’t in any sand traps but I did rake a few for my buddy and they were all great. Plenty of nice and fluffy sand. Rough was very manageable.

They have done some reworking of a few of the bunkers. Mainly on holes 9 and 10. They have reshaped them and added some nasty lips and mounds to negotiate. Gone are the church pew style bunker/grass on hole 10 and now it’s just an ugly bunker with mounds of grass. Not sure what the purpose of that was. Maybe easier on maintenance crews?

As far as customer service is concerned. One person (Don A.) who is in the pro shop, is a complete jerk (enter other explicit here). The rest of the team are great. This used to be a “locals” course but they seem to cater towards tourists who I guess are paying the outrageous fees. I used a couple of free vouchers so obviously it was worth it. But for $135 rack rate? No way. $75 would seem like a fair price for this place.

Walked the blues this afternoon 5/19/2025 right at twilight with my buddy Matt joined by Randy who we have played with on our rotation of courses we usually play. We had a blast today under perfect weather conditions 72 degrees and maybe a 5mph breeze. Pop was 4 hrs 45 minutes with lots of golfers on the course today.

First time out since late last year and the course is shaping up into nice beginning of summer Olivas conditions.

Most Fairways were in good shape with some small areas of little gir patches with irrigation flags that the groudcrew is working on. Rated 8/10. Fairways will only getter better with the warmer weather.

Greens are in great shape rolling quick and pure. They held irons nicely. I'm used to softer greens here but these were rolling nice and quick. Rated 8.5/10

Tees are almost always level and nice and lush which they were today. Rated 8.5/10

Fairway rough just off the fairways in good shape. Get outside the cart path and it's thick vegetation and lost ball city. Lucky to have only one penalty shot today but can see many lost balls on a real wayward day. Rated 8/10

Was not in any bunkers but my buddy was in 2 greenside bunkers that he described as having perfect white marble pancake material which he executed beautifully!

The staff here are about as friendly as you will see. Great practice area, great prices, wonderful layout and peaking into great summer conditions. The next 4-5 months is the time to get out and play olivas.

Played Saturday, May 17, in mid-morning. They were running about 10 minutes behind when I teed off so hot a huge wait. It has been quite a while since I last played here - at that time one had to drive to the practice center which is next door but has its entrance off Michelson. This time I was allowed to take my cart over there pre-round. Good service overall. I rode at a cost of $103. I played from the blue tees with the threesome I was paired with. It was pretty short with quite a few short par 4s and no par 3 over 167.

The course conditions exceeded my expectations. The course is in good shape over all, much better than the last time I played it. Some bare spots on the edges, especially adjacent holes 1, 17 and 18. Overall, though, the fairways were reasonably lush as was the rough. I was in a couple of bunkers and they had good sand. The tee boxes were generally good although a few were chewed up or with bare spots.

The greens were the highlight. I did not recall how undulating they are. Very interesting and fun. The pin positions were generally fair but it could be set up tough. They were rolling nicely at a decently fast speed.

Overall, a pricey but fun round. Recommended although look for a deal if you can get one.

Played South today with a 12:14 tee time using a free round included in my JC Golf Anytime Players Card membership. Even though it's a "free" round, Los Serranos' website charges you $2 when booking, which the pro shop said is non-refundable. Not a huge deal, but it also speaks to the crossed wires of Los Serranos being part of JC Golf but also having their own Players' Club membership. The starter asked if I was ok playing alone and offered to have me start early, but a minute later he added a twosome to play with me. We started at 11:52 with no one in front of us and played the first six holes in about an hour and 10 minutes. Then we caught up to groups ahead and pace for the rest of the day was quite slow, finishing in a little over four and a half hours. My two playing partners bailed at the turn. We all rode and played the white tees.

Conditions are good! The greens are somewhat unusual in that they are in very nice condition but deceivingly slow. They are smooth, extremely soft, and slow to medium-slow in speed. Long putts were very difficult to hit hard enough to get to the hole. It's rare to see greens in as nice of condition as these but rolling so slow. Some spots were so soft that it felt like I was sinking into the turf. I suspect they're overwatering in anticipation of higher temps expected later this week -- and summer on the horizon. There were quite a few unfixed ball marks that I repaired, but that's not the course's fault. Also, the fifth green had some bare spots around the front edges. Fairways had good coverage and provided nice lies all day. Rough wasn't too penal, just a bit longer than the fairway. I think I was only in one bunker that was filled with nice, thick, heavy sand. White tee boxes were all good.

I've always loved this course and it didn't disappoint today. I'm not sure I'd ever played the white tees, which changed the course pretty significantly in spots. I'll go back to the blues next time, but the other two guys were playing white and I haven't played much lately, so I was fine with white. Definitely recommended, but eat your Wheaties to get those putts to the hole.

Played in another RPGC men's club tournament at the home course this past weekend and am delighted to report that the greens are in tremendous shape right now. Completely healed, rolling true and fast and in very optimal condition for one of the busiest courses in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately the opposite is true of the fairways and some other conditions. My flight played from the white tees but those tee boxes were in good condition, while the bunkers were just okay and the rough was thick but playable. Back to the fairways - dry, thin and just not very optically pleasing. The recent heat did a number on them, so hopefully this past week's small rainfall will do the opposite, but I'm not convinced.

POP was okay for the most part but we were the final group for the tournament so it was expectedly a longer round than normal. Once again no cart service but a great little snack shop at the 12th tee box.

Hoping the club can get the fairways in a little better shape and then playing here will once again by a no-brainer.

Played Trump Natl early on 5/19.

What a tremendous, and tremendously difficult, golf course. Fortunately, my driver was on today. And the only missed driver was one of the few places you can get away with it. Only two lost balls, both on layup shots that I thought were good, just had a hazard I could not see.

Course is in great condition. Greens and tees excellent. Fairways perfect. The sand did seem to vary in consistency, but still really good.

Course was fantastic, but surprisingly, the customer service was a big ZERO! No valet service on arrival. No beverage cart. No marshall. No water in the cooler. Stopped at the turn to the snack bar / grill, and they were too busy to bother coming to the window. It really was shocking how we were completely ignored once we were on the course.

I'm assuming the staff was all in the parking lot watching BMW films commercials for their new cars - because they sure weren't interested in the golfers.

Customer service excellent. The chef in the restaurant really kicks some serious butt! Keep up the good work my man. Starter, Gil, was great. Marshall was all over the course doing a great job ensuring an excellent POP at 4hrs and that was with about a 10-15min stop at the turn to use the restroom and grab some lunch.

Course is in overall good to great shape.

White tees need a little leveling and had quite a bit of divot damage because they are so narrow, but just take an extra 30 seconds to find a good spot to tee it up.

Fairways were in excellent shape and getting better. They're doing some cart control with some short fencing which is helping keep areas in better condition.

I didn't find any bunkers, but they looked like they were just fine.

Rough was just fine, especially around the greens. Very few bare spots with consistent coverage and fairly lush, but predictable.

Greens were a little shaggy, spongy and slower than normal, perhaps because of aeration about a month ago. They held shots very well! but didn't putt quite as smooth as normal. I predict in a couple of weeks, they will be beautiful and at that time the course will be awesome on all aspects.

Always an easy recommendation. They've increased the rates a little bit, but they're putting money into the course.

Stopped off to check out Buena and see how it looks. Pro shop, snack bar and restrooms are all closed. They have a trailer in the upper parking lot for check in, with bathrooms next to it. 14 holes open. $25 to walk, and they do have carts. Putting green is open and they still have some nets to hit into for warming up. Front side you play, 1,4,6,7,and 9. Back nine is the normal route with all holes open. Restroom on course are closed, but the do have a couple of porta-potty next to it. Tees were very lush and level. Fairways for the most were in real good condition with a few spots that need a little more time to fill in. Rough is okay in some areas and pretty bare in others. Bunkers looked to have some nice white sand and in good shape. Greens were in good shape rolling nicely and playing mostly soft. Fairways on 2,3,and 8 looked to be very playable, with greens on 3 and 5 almost ready to be opened up. Greens on 2 and 8 haven't even been started to be repaired. Don't know if they are planning to open 3,and 5 anytime soon, but 2,and 8 are a long ways off. Overall they have done a pretty good job getting this course back into playing conditions.

very disappointing conditions. In short avoid this place. I’ve played here dozens of times and the last couple including earlier this week have really been poor conditions. The greens have multiple brown/dead areas on them and the skirt area around the greens are atrocious. Mainly hardpacked dirt with a few patches of grass here and there. Fairways were the only decent part of the course. Fairly lush with a good amount of rollout. Tee boxes were pretty chewed up. Bunkers were a mixture of gravel pits and others were excellent with ample fluffy sand throughout.

Prices at Dragonfly have gone through the roof in the last 5 years. The price and conditions just don’t match up. There are better options when in the area.

Walked West Seattle this morning and enjoyed it quite a bit. I've been meaning to get back out here as it has been a few years, and I'm not sure why I've waited this long. Conditions were pretty good all the way around, even though it was a bit on the cold side with about a 1 club wind that was coming and going. The greens rolled pretty well at a medium quick pace, with a few bumps here and there. Well struck shots would hold, longer clubs for me released a bit. Fairways gave decent roll out, and really nice lies to hit from (except from the old divot I found on my best drive of the day on #9). Rough isn't very long (but still nice and healthy) and not very penalizing. I found the greenside bunker on 16 and it had a good layer of quality sand. Tee boxes had just been punched, but that didn't bother me as you're putting your ball on a tee so I'm happy they're keeping them healthy. I had found a tee time for a single at 8:37, and the guys in the shop bumped me forward to join the twosome that went off at 8:30, and we got around in a solid 4 hours, with the slowish group in front of us letting us play through at the turn. Got a decent lunch in the restaurant afterwards, and experienced really solid customer service everywhere. Definitely need to get this place back in the rotation.

RDDenn on his comments. Especially the dryness but I like that as it provided some great roll out all morning. Enjoyed the speed of the greens and having local knowledge really helps when they are like this. Always great to get back here and play given the distance these days for me and freeway traffic. Do miss Bob and his crew from years ago, as well as all the former guys like Gary, Mike and Mike behind the counter. But the coffee shop is a great improvement from years past. Still a great value with Sr county card and one of the best county courses around.

Played Thursday, 5/15, in midmorning. Good service from the course, starter at the first tee keeping groups moving, marshals around the course, coffee shop open and doing a decent business. Started about 10 minutes after our tee time and played in around 4.5 hours, not bad for this course at that time of day.

The course is dry, looking more pronounced on the back nine. Fairways and greens were good but the rough is not gettin much water. On #15, the dry areas extended into the fairway. I was left of the fairway and got great distance because there was nothing to stop the ball. On #16, I punched out of the trees and was lucky I rolled into the fairway bunker about 115 yards out, or I would have rolled down the drop off to the fence. The fairway was running much faster than I expected. The greens were excellent with decent speed.

Picture perfect day although the Santa Ana winds had the marine layer blocking views of Catalina Island. Recommended.
