This is the second time we’ve played Oak Quarry, separated by only three years. During that time my son has gone from a former school baseball player who sprayed balls everywhere to about a six handicap who drove the 320 yard par 4 6th hole, and thanks to the lessons I've split with him, even I’ve gotten better. Same with this spectacular property. Three years ago the course was in the middle of a renovation, some of the fairways were a little the worse for wear and most of the back nine bunkers were tarped over. Today the fairways were in terrific shape, the bunkers were full of sand and the greens were beautiful. I’m lucky enough to be able to avoid weekend play (which can be five hours almost anywhere) most of the time now that I’m retired, and my son works a job where he can set his own hours, so we had a very different experience from some of the weekend golfers whose comments I’ve just read. I can say the staff was welcoming, the range balls were available and we went off very close to our 8:54 tee time. Our pace was about four hours and twenty minutes (we played with another father and son who were great companions, but relatively new to the game, so there were more than a few breakfast balls and a number of times where they graciously picked up after about eight strokes) but that just gave us a little more time to enjoy the incredible scenery. We had an absolute blast, and enjoyed a delicious lunch afterwards, at a table overlooking the 18th. While there, Robert, one of the gentlemen who run the pro shop stopped by the table to ask us how we’d enjoyed the course and was delighted to hear us sing its praises. He asked us to please pass on those comments online and hoped to see us out again. That kind of customer relations means a lot when you’ve driven an hour to get to the course and are looking forward to at least an hour and a half to get home. But it was well worth it and we will definitely be back a lot sooner than three years. The only suggestion we made was to urge the guys at check in to remind people to rake the traps and fix their ballmarks on the greens. It’s something my dad taught me and I’ve taught my son. Leave the course a little prettier than you found it. And when it’s as beautiful as this one is, that’s even more an obligation.

Played 5-19-25 walking for $32 senior rate, first out as a threesome and finishing in a little under 3 hours. Tee boxes were in decent shape, mostly level stance with some thin areas, and minor divot damage on par threes. Fairways were in mostly good shape, good roll out with some thin and brown spots, but I never had a bad lie. Rough along fairways was not much of a factor, cut pretty short and in okay condition. Rough around the greens was very lush and playing 2-3 inches. Was in two greenside bunkers, one with a good layer of brown sand, and the other had a thin layer of a dirt and sand mixture. Greens were in the best shape I have seen them in awhile, rolling very smooth at a medium pace and playing a little on the soft side. Overall course is in decent shape and well worth the price.

Under the new superintendent, the course is looking good. Greens have regained much of the pace I have grown accustomed too, and are receptive to well struck shots, of which I make too few of. Fairways are improving as well. Overall, the course is now beginning to look and play more like its original form.

Played 5-18-25 early morning as a foursome in a little under 4 hours with no one in front, or behind us. Tee boxes were in decent shape mostly level with a few of the three pars needing some leveling. Fairways were in good condition with a few brown spots, but mostly good lies and decent roll out. Rough along fairways was in good shape, between1-3 inches, with mostly hard pan under the trees. Was in one greenside bunker that had an ample amount of heavy white sand. Greens were in great condition, rolling smooth and fast, and playing semi-soft. Always a joy to play here, highly recommended.

As you can see by the rating the course is in excellent condition. Quick greens. Nice collars around the greens and good fairway coverage all the way to the green. Now,the bad, They allowed a group of 7,yes,7! The desk said that they had many calls about it and the group was also spitting sunflower seeds on the greens. They sent out a marshal but it did no good. Come to find out these are buds of the GM and he just lets them do what they want. So in the future just let the desk know you are friends of the GM and mess up the course all you want. Management could care less.

Played Big Rock on 5/18/25 as a warmup for a tourney the following weekend. I was the first to head out and the winds were pretty strong around 20-25 mph. Playing solo, I ended up playing a one man scramble with two balls and I really enjoyed the course. It's not the toughest course but I'll take it's great condition in all aspects over toughness. From tee to green, the conditions of the course were excellent.

The greens were really firm and I did have a couple of approach shots hit the green and roll off the back, not a biggie.

I will definitely be back. When all other courses in the area that I usually play are over $200, getting on this course for $105 was a steal in my opinion.

Played Del Monte this morning with a former co-worker who was in town from Texas. The original plan was to play Poppy Hills but there was a tournament going on so we opted to Del Monte. The weather was absolutely beautiful. We tee’d off at 9:30 with a couple other locals. Course is in great shape Tee to green. Starting with the small greens that for the most part are single tier but they have just enough slope in them to keep you honest. The greens rolled smooth at a very fast pace. I played Spanish Bay last week the greens here were much much faster.

Fairways present a tight lie which is great for roll out. Still plush enough to get good contact and they were green throughout. Tee boxes were level and lush as well. I wasn’t in any sand traps but I did rake a few for my buddy and they were all great. Plenty of nice and fluffy sand. Rough was very manageable.

They have done some reworking of a few of the bunkers. Mainly on holes 9 and 10. They have reshaped them and added some nasty lips and mounds to negotiate. Gone are the church pew style bunker/grass on hole 10 and now it’s just an ugly bunker with mounds of grass. Not sure what the purpose of that was. Maybe easier on maintenance crews?

As far as customer service is concerned. One person (Don A.) who is in the pro shop, is a complete jerk (enter other explicit here). The rest of the team are great. This used to be a “locals” course but they seem to cater towards tourists who I guess are paying the outrageous fees. I used a couple of free vouchers so obviously it was worth it. But for $135 rack rate? No way. $75 would seem like a fair price for this place.

Walked the blues this afternoon 5/19/2025 right at twilight with my buddy Matt joined by Randy who we have played with on our rotation of courses we usually play. We had a blast today under perfect weather conditions 72 degrees and maybe a 5mph breeze. Pop was 4 hrs 45 minutes with lots of golfers on the course today.

First time out since late last year and the course is shaping up into nice beginning of summer Olivas conditions.

Most Fairways were in good shape with some small areas of little gir patches with irrigation flags that the groudcrew is working on. Rated 8/10. Fairways will only getter better with the warmer weather.

Greens are in great shape rolling quick and pure. They held irons nicely. I'm used to softer greens here but these were rolling nice and quick. Rated 8.5/10

Tees are almost always level and nice and lush which they were today. Rated 8.5/10

Fairway rough just off the fairways in good shape. Get outside the cart path and it's thick vegetation and lost ball city. Lucky to have only one penalty shot today but can see many lost balls on a real wayward day. Rated 8/10

Was not in any bunkers but my buddy was in 2 greenside bunkers that he described as having perfect white marble pancake material which he executed beautifully!

The staff here are about as friendly as you will see. Great practice area, great prices, wonderful layout and peaking into great summer conditions. The next 4-5 months is the time to get out and play olivas.

Played Saturday, May 17, in mid-morning. They were running about 10 minutes behind when I teed off so hot a huge wait. It has been quite a while since I last played here - at that time one had to drive to the practice center which is next door but has its entrance off Michelson. This time I was allowed to take my cart over there pre-round. Good service overall. I rode at a cost of $103. I played from the blue tees with the threesome I was paired with. It was pretty short with quite a few short par 4s and no par 3 over 167.

The course conditions exceeded my expectations. The course is in good shape over all, much better than the last time I played it. Some bare spots on the edges, especially adjacent holes 1, 17 and 18. Overall, though, the fairways were reasonably lush as was the rough. I was in a couple of bunkers and they had good sand. The tee boxes were generally good although a few were chewed up or with bare spots.

The greens were the highlight. I did not recall how undulating they are. Very interesting and fun. The pin positions were generally fair but it could be set up tough. They were rolling nicely at a decently fast speed.

Overall, a pricey but fun round. Recommended although look for a deal if you can get one.

Played South today with a 12:14 tee time using a free round included in my JC Golf Anytime Players Card membership. Even though it's a "free" round, Los Serranos' website charges you $2 when booking, which the pro shop said is non-refundable. Not a huge deal, but it also speaks to the crossed wires of Los Serranos being part of JC Golf but also having their own Players' Club membership. The starter asked if I was ok playing alone and offered to have me start early, but a minute later he added a twosome to play with me. We started at 11:52 with no one in front of us and played the first six holes in about an hour and 10 minutes. Then we caught up to groups ahead and pace for the rest of the day was quite slow, finishing in a little over four and a half hours. My two playing partners bailed at the turn. We all rode and played the white tees.

Conditions are good! The greens are somewhat unusual in that they are in very nice condition but deceivingly slow. They are smooth, extremely soft, and slow to medium-slow in speed. Long putts were very difficult to hit hard enough to get to the hole. It's rare to see greens in as nice of condition as these but rolling so slow. Some spots were so soft that it felt like I was sinking into the turf. I suspect they're overwatering in anticipation of higher temps expected later this week -- and summer on the horizon. There were quite a few unfixed ball marks that I repaired, but that's not the course's fault. Also, the fifth green had some bare spots around the front edges. Fairways had good coverage and provided nice lies all day. Rough wasn't too penal, just a bit longer than the fairway. I think I was only in one bunker that was filled with nice, thick, heavy sand. White tee boxes were all good.

I've always loved this course and it didn't disappoint today. I'm not sure I'd ever played the white tees, which changed the course pretty significantly in spots. I'll go back to the blues next time, but the other two guys were playing white and I haven't played much lately, so I was fine with white. Definitely recommended, but eat your Wheaties to get those putts to the hole.
